I just tried to do a member search with the "advanced filters" and put in the location but it showed up with 0 members when I put AK or Alaska in the location slot. I am not sure if I can do anything else to search for members in a general area.

One good way we could do it would be to start a thread to say a lil something about the area you live or fly in, then one could search that thread for any given location and it should show the posts that have that state, city or country in it. Now all we have to do is get all 540 something members to actually post and we would have a good data base to search

Norm, I think the guys that have AK in the names are here in AK (Alaska)

I will take a look at the controls on the member search and see if there is a way to narrow the search by location. Give me a few n I will get back to you.

As far a great bush planes?? Yes, we can get in and out short, but range is somewhat limited as well as the amount of gear we can carry. Most of my flights are around 100-150 miles from the home base, but that gets me pretty remote. Fuel burn and fuel capacity always leave me looking for places to go that I can get fuel and not have to pay 10 bucks a gallon for it. I can carry an extra 15 or so gallons with me if I am flying solo, but the new bride does not like me going out and playing without her

I have noticed a number of members have AK behind the names. I know your from the SoCal area. I am curious if there is a way to search the members page to check where people are flying their Avids and Kitfoxes. Just a curiosity. Looks like these are great inexpensive bush plane.

it lubricates it on the way through the engine then burns up in the big fire on top of the piston after it has done its useful lubricating. If it didn't burn up, there would be oil pouring out the pipe and the plugs would be fouled in a matter of minutes.

I must be getting old, I could have sworn you were doing an engine swap to a 582. Guess its time to take my meds

I would say if your happy with what you have, stick with it! No reason to spend time, energy and money on something you already are happy with!

I had them on my KF2 wings - dont see much difference except you wont dent them if you bump something with the leading edge - I just pulled a set off of my project to extend the LE 4 inches for the Soob engine and nose gear weights added, and wont need them with the 1 1/4 new LE tube. They come in about a foot of extra length, and you can extend them onto and blend the ends with 9460 for the tips, or just blend them without adding them to the tips - your call on this. If you have removeable tips, just put a split line at the end of wing, or blend there.
They really smooth up the LE. Dont know what they cost now - but were worth the price when I bought mine, IMO.

Then how does the 2 stroke engine get any lubrication if the oil burns up???

    Leni,
I haven't switched my engine yet. The 503 has been great for 930hrs so far. So I am still not convinced to switch yet. What do you think?

I started playing with the gears in the spring so it was probly mid 30s to mid 40s, then in the summer when it was in the high 70s low 80s, then again in cool temps in the fall. For the most part I am flying sea level to 5000' with most landings n take offs not much over 3500'

    Leni,
When you were testing them, would the temp have been above 70? I noticed the real performance increases come at higher density altitudes. My fixed pitch prop and ifa do about the same climbing below 60-70 degrees, but its night and day above that. Thanks, Bryce

That goes along with my use of the LI batteries in the RC planes. When used in low draw applications they were fine, but if you pull too many amps at once, boom! the fire ball out of a little 1020ma AA size battery was pretty impressive (and made my little electric tigermoth look like it just got hit by the red barron (and that was pulling a little less than one amp on that plane) I now use LYPO batteries in all my RC planes and while they will catch fire if you seriously pull too many amps, they don't explode the way the LI batteries did. The LYPO batteries will puff up then the foil wrapper will break and you get a cute gas cloud then a slow fire that burns pretty hot once it gets started, but it is a slow motion process, not the sudden catastrophic boom and fire ball that a LI battery does.

Why Boeing would use LI batteries when there are SO MUCH better batteries out there now is beyond me.

2 stroke oil burns VERY well... I use it all the time to start bonfires. Yes, after a few drinks I have even used the high dollar full synthetic oil to start fires. Was kinda pissed at myself the next morning for doing it, but oh well, there were worse things I did those nights to be mad about

The 2 stroke probably mixes better with the gas than the 4 stroke oil, but it does burn just as well as the 4 stroke oil on a fire.

Nice pics Mark! How do you like the 582? Should be a noticeable performance difference I would think.

Sweet pics Randy. I am still trying to get the pics off my laptop (the screen and inverter went out on it so waiting on new parts) from the trip at the lodge a few weeks ago. We got some that were OK, but they were just with the darn cell phone what should have been stellar shots were just... OK..

I know that akflyerbob has them in his undercambered wing. If nothing else, they give you a little protection from those pesky branches that would normally be smacking into the aluminum spar. I think they are worth it for leading edge protection if nothing else.

    Leading Edge
    Guys,

I've been reading the different posts about using the Kitfox Plastic Leading Edge on the Avid wings. I understand that the gains are minimal. I also understand that it is designed for wings without undercamber.

I want to use the leading edge because it hides the fuel tank wrap and the wing strut mount rivets, and I think it makes it look like a real wing.

Here is what I would like to know from you...

Is Kitfox the only place to buy them?

Has anyone used it with an undercambered wing, and are there any issues?

How did you fair the leading edge into the wingtip?

Is it not worth the money, time, and weight in your opinion?

I read that Brett at Airdale could sell them to me, but he gets them from Kitfox anyway. I haven't been able to make contact with him, so I called Kitfox and they are in Florida for an show until the 29th...aaarrrggg! So it looks like I have some time to think about it!

Please let me know what you think...

    Thanks,
    Ron

We had a pretty nice day for flying today and we just got about 4 or 5" of fresh snow so I felt obligated to go track it up. I was having fun playing on the lakes and thought this view of McKinnley and Foraker were nice with the alpenglow on them. I played trying to write my name on one of the lakes. It is not as easy as you would think since you can't see where to start and stop very easy when you are on the ground. I tried to take a picture of it but it didn't show up well; guess I will have to work on that .

I've been mixing a couple of ounces of 2-cycle oil per 5 gal in mine just to try to protect the tanks in case I get some alcohol gas but I haven't been using synthetic. Not sure if it does any good but it doesn't seem to hurt.
I know the MMO definately softens rubber; I thought I would use a bit of it on my Ford diesel just to try to keep the injectors lubed. It ate up my recirc lines that I had just replaced in 1 year. It probably keeps things real clean but made me think twice about putting it in my gas tank ir anything with rubber fuel system parts. I have heard it is great to keep valves from sticking or to loosen stuck valves in aircraft motors though.

In reguard to the Marvel Mystery Oil, if you wonder what it contains, this may tell you. Google MMO NTSB and then look at the first listing. According to the NTSB accident report, MMO is 3/4 mineral oil, stoddards solvent, and 1 percent lard. Not sure that it's true, but it is kind of interesting..... Take care, Jim Chuk

According to my racing source, and I have no other info - The Motorcycle oil I listed above is the ONLY ONE with Zinc in it now. He says MM oil burns with the gas, so doesnt lube the exhaust valves and exhaust like the "non-burnable" synthetic 2-cycle oil????/>?
I'm just an old machinist - Love the smell of hot black sulpher cutting oil.

Your buddies right about the Zinc not being in our oils anymore.Thats what keeps camshafts from going flat when breaking in a new automobile engine.Shell Rotella supposedly still has zinc but dont know for how long.Marvel mystery oil is good stuff. We mix one gallon of mineral spirits to 1/4 cup of Marvel, paint it on our drag tires and it softens them up and makes for better traction. It also can be used on old car tires that have dried out.We use Valvoline race oil for our drag motors, lots of zinc in it.I friend told me if a can of oil doesnt have the energy conserving logo on it then it probably still has zinc........Randy

Just make sure you have enough flex line from the tank outlet so you can swing the wings both ways.

FUEL MIXTURES and CRANKCASE OIL- 4 CYCLE
FOR the 4 cycle drivers FUEL TANKS: We used to mix 1 gal of 100LL (which contains 4 times the lead of the old 87) with 3 gallons of mogas and added 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil to each 4 gal mix. This cuts down the amount of lead in your plugs and in your oil.
The newer, and I think better, method is to use 2 cycle full synthetic oil in place of the MM oil because the 2cycle oil dont burn up like the MM oil and does a better job of lubing the valves and exhausts. It must be FULL synthetic to work according to my source. This might also help protect your FG tanks?
FOR THE CRANKCASE: The guy who built our C-90 also builds aircraft racing engines: He says they use only
Valvoline Motorcycle 4-cycle 20-50 because it is the only oil that contains ZINK (zinc?) and will lube valves better.
Thats my 2 cents worth of thoughts for today.
