The coldest I rode in Fairbanks was -65 getting the sleds tuned and ready for the start of the 2004 Irondog.  I can assure you that running the river at 100+ MPH at -65 SUCKS!   I will taket eh milder temps of the Peninsula ANY DAY!

I think your thinking of Cordova!  Not sure on the 200' but I do know some of the areas around there are still ridable with snowmachines into July!

  5. akflyer added a post in a topic KFIV-1200 vs MKIV HH

I have some time in a KF I II and III but not a IV.  I have some time in a Avid MK IV.  Beware that several of the "MK IV" I have seen lately are NOT MK IV's.. There is a discussion on this forum right now about an Avid "B" that the guy is marketing as a MK IV.  Make sure you check serial numbers etc to assure you are really looking at a MK IV.

The MK IV flys great, the major difference between an Avid and a KF is the length of the wing and the airfoil used.  The KF has the SLIGHT STOL advantage here but there is no place that I know of that I would take a KF into that I would not take my Avid into.

I am using the 18-53.  That is the minimum and maximum pitch range.  If you use the high pitch blades, you will burn up the electric motors left n right because of the torque needed to flatten out the blades enough to get your RPM.. I went through 4 electric motors before I figured that out..

    KFIV-1200 vs MKIV HH
I have the kfiv. Hopefully she will be flying again in a month or so. Its been a fun rebuild, but now its time to fly...

So my buddy really likes my kf and would like one as well. He has been looking for a kfIV, but now he has spotted a few mkiv heavy haulers for sale and they seem to demand much less $ than the kitfox.

    What is the comparison?

Our flying consists of burning local holes only. No real need for speed, but he does want it to fell like an airplane and not an ultralight. And the 1050-1200 gw helps with our passenger loads etc....

    Thanks

The day that motor actually installs that light ill eat my hat.

As to the cost argument, that is a straw man. There are thousands of used 912 motors out there to be had if you just look around a little. I know a guy who is up to almost $10k trying to make an Aerovee work in a Just Escapade. It's still neither reliable or functional. My othe buddy built his plane with a used 912 and has less than $8k in the fwf, he's here with me on the east coast now...

    You decide.

    Leni,
What Pitch Ivo are you using? 18"-53 or 35"-70"?   And what do those numbers correspond to?

Thirty years ago this spring my four year old son and I drove back togeather from the tri cities area in Washington state back to Mn. Just the two of us also. It was quite a trip. I'll have to ask him what he remembers of it. And yes they do grow up fast. Looking back, it seems like those 30 years went by way to fast. Enjoy them as much as you can, while you can. Maybe you've heard of the song by Harry Chapin called Cats in the Cradle. It sure is true! Jim

I think Fairbanks is a little more extreme than Leni said - It can get over 100F there in the summer, with thunderstorms - and believe it or not, Morell mushrooms grow there on the south side of the mountains - and -55 is nothing for winter - I have seen -80 there! Really COLD!!! My wife has relatives living there.
Glad I lived in Anchorage - much milder there. Lowest I saw was -32 for only a few days - usually around zero to +20 and up to about 75 in summer, and only saw lightning twice one day in 10 years - usually 12 feet of snow a year, compared to 30 or 40 feet across the pond in Valdez or the town near there - forgot the name of it.
I think some of the ice fields get like 200 feet of snow a year - I think I heard that?

I went to the site - price is $12K - either in process or delivered already are 3 for the Kitfox 4, and 3 for the Kitfox 7.
Be nice to get some reports from owners.
NOTE: A little confusion about the site - The photo shown looks like an opposed 4, and not the in-line Honda.

Sorry if I'm going on to much about our winter, but today the TV weather for Duluth Mn said they are currently in 4th place for snow years. Record is 135" and they were at 130" They said Duluth got 50" of snow so far in April. All of last winter they got 35" I'm about 60 miles NNW of Duluth. Supposed to be 60 this weekend, so maybe the tide has turned. Jim

Indeed it does, thank you Bob. Enjoyed a beautiful sunny Spring day here, magnolia tree budding white, bulbs are up and grass starting to green. Heck, I think I even heard a lawnmower today (not mine, lol!). Almost feel a little guilty saying that after hearing some of the cold weather you guys are still having... Not!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the info, suggestions etc offered. Also like the new looks of this site.

Not much new to report on prgress. Been very slow for months now. This never ending winter has me down immensly.

My son and I will have to move our plane factory. He has had his house listed for some time and he's just said he has an accepted offer. Looks like the project will have to come out here at least for awhile. That also means I need to toss a lot of junk out of my shed and make some more space in the shop portion of my shed. One wall will also be moved west, widening the work area by another 7' or so.

Wondering if I've ever mentioned our now trimmable horiz stabilizer. Small elect linear actuator, strut braces move with the actuator guid tube. HUMM, one of a kind system. Scary? Once the plane has flown and final adjustments, a couple small shaft collars (or??) will set max limits for nose up/down travel. This actuator has a small sliding variable resistor on it, so the trim indicator will be a small gauge on the dash.

Still a little hung up on power plant. Have the Corvaire yet but not done anything with it. I've seen Continentals in these and weight would be nearly the same. Still think the Sube install is the same or heavier than the Corvaire or Cont but not leaning to the Sube, although I really like the Sube autos I've had in the past. Especially thhe XT6 with air suspension. Definatly a dependable engine. Almost scored a VW which was projected to get 90hp. That would be lighter and I'd still be happy if we got 80hp or so. That engine may have slipped by us though and it would be $$$$ to start on one of them from scratch.

What would really be nice would be a Jabiru or the UL Power 85 hp. You may recall, I do not like 2 cycles and/or reduction drives. We want direct drive 4 cycle, so,,,,,

Well, that's my story (for now) and I'm sticking to it.

    Thanks guys,

    Come on spring!

    Doug and everyone,
I sure hate inaccuracies - especially when they are mine!
Here are some corrections and info:
The HOnda engine that I was talking to Randy about was the RAVEN, HONDA 1500VT Turbo, 140 hp, at 210 lbs, since he was talking about adding a turbo to the EA-81.
The OTHER engine listed in Kitplanes is a VIKING HONDA FIT, 110 hp, and I called them today and got a weight of 178 lbs! They said they had spent 2 years researching and redesigning this engine, and there are very few stock auto parts left in it. They claim the head is not longer than one head of an EA-81, but I would have to see that to believe it.
You can contact VIKING at 386-566-2616, In Florida, or get the dimensions of the engine on their site at www.vikingaircraftengines.com.
Eggenfeldner did not even make the list in this years alternative engines section???
Now, I stand corrected - and hope this helps. I would like to see some time on this engine before trying it.
    Is Eggenfeldner now Viking?

Looks like the HONDA FIT is about the same as a C-90, but then you add the rad & hoses & water......
Dam, I forgot to ask a price!!!! What does FIT stand for?
    BTW: HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOUG!
