  1. FoxDB added a post in a topic Wanting to build a baggage area under turtle deck

Just thought I would post some pics of the storage area I built in my Mod 1 Kitfox. Sorry for the poor quality photos there using my old cell phone camera. It is constructed of .06 Lexan with reinforcing at the hangers and an Aluminum outside door. The top of the door is pinched under the turtle deck.

    I'm new to this forum
My name is John. I have owned an Avid model B STOL since 1990 and hav flow in for 4150 hours so far.

    I have been through 5 different engines. 1) Rotax 532 with rope start 2 & 3) Rotax 582s 4 & 5) Jabiru 2200.

The 532 was swapped for the 1st 582 for the dual ignition feature. The 1st 582 had no starter so I hand propped it. The 2nd 582 had an E box with starter.

I wanted a 4 stroke and installed the 1st Jabiru 2200. They had just changed to hyd lifters and the engine had many issues and problems. I had it rebuilt after an exhaust valved head popped and destroyed the number 2 piston, head rod, etc. My dealer replaced the bad stuff and rebuilt it.

After getting it back from him I fired it up and it threw a rod. I was pissed as you might imagine.

I contacted the dealer and he said he would provide me with a brand new , up to date Jab 2200 if only I wouldn't publish my experience on the Jabiru forum. I agreed and have been well pleased with this latest engine. I have flown it for 850 hours with nary a hick-up.

I did not build my Avid, but I have modified it to make it all that it can be.

Removed the panel tank. Don't like gas hanging over my legs. It still carries 28 gallons in the wings.
Removed the flberglass bucket seats and replaced with the sling seat
Moved the rudder peddals forward 3 inches.
Added extensions on the elevators for better pitch authority
Split the windshield. Now it has a clear .060 front Lexan and a .125 tinted top glass.
    Changed the 600 x 6 tires for 800 x 6 x 21" Tundras for that back country flying.
Installed a leaning device similar to HacMan for the Bing carb.
Installed a vacuum gauge similar to that used on autos to monitor my engine health.
Installed VGs which gave much lower stall with flaperons OFF and some benefit with flaperons ON.
Installed VGs on pilot side of the vertical stab to compensate for the vert stab offset designed for the Rotax spinning the other direction.
Installed gap seals on horizontal surfaces
Installed fairings in jury struts, horizontal lift struts and tubes that go from the bungied to the axels.
Installed a Dynon D6 for those times when you wish you had gyros on board.
    Installed fuel flow meter

My Avid cruises at 100-105 TAS running 2900 RPM burning 2.8 GPH. Range is about 10 hours or 1000 miles...cough...cough. Bladder range is 3 hours.
Climb is 1000-1400 FPM depending on load and DA.

The Avid was built in 1988 by Craig Johnson

    Steve Henry and his SuperSTOL
I am fortunate enough to be friends with Steve Henry. He's one of those guys that would help out anyone in need. He's the one that picked me up off the side of the mountain last summer and helped me get my plane out. He's a blast to fly with! The Super STOL is his third Highlander and man does he know how to make it do what it was designed for!!!

Some people just cant understand - I would have put a $3000 C-90 or O-200 in it, painted it a lot cheaper than the e$pensive job - and left the rest stock, except for Grove brakes and wheels.
Still cant understand why a 1940's Cub us worth what they are selling for today.
Oh, excuse me - this is a 1950's SUPER-Cub - only 60 years old instead of 70 years old - guess the O-360 was stock!
My 11-year-old truck is probably worth about $3000 now - Hope it's an antique soon!
Maybe I'm just too poor - anyone got a job for an old machinist?

Haven't posted much on this site but I sure do like this forum and thought I would add some pics. I have conversed with Joey back in the day on the PPC forum when I decided that PPC's are fun but going 30 mph in circles gets old when you have as much money tied up in a PPC as what a Kitfox or Avid costs. And oh yeah, you get to go places in a Kitfox or Avid.

Hahaha... Seriously, probably a way over modified O360 Lycoming.

Someone needs to explain to this guy that you will never get out of an airplane (experimental or certified) what you have in it, when you go to this extreme! Titanium panel? Seriously?

Hmm that's interesting Jim. I think before I get too crazy I am going to get a few of those stand offs that are longer to get a better angle on the joint and then clean up the joint some and go from there. I have a huge list of projects I want to do on the plane this winter and not enough time. It's going to be especially hard considering it's been parked for the last 6 months and all I'm going to want to do is fly it when I get home. Were fortunate to have year round flying weather in CA.

I think lots of people had the factory muffler mounts break.  I know two of mine did.  If  my memory is correct, I believe John Miller's mount also broke and that is why he mounted his muffler on the firewall.  Jim

I believe it is now listed as the Stratus2000, Reiner sold the company about 13 years ago, but it is still the same Subaru EA-81 with twin carbs, a stainless exhaust that "adds 10 hp", a reground cam, redrive, and I think it is bored over .020? You can read anything between 105 hp and 115 hp at higher rpm - the original engine was rated at 72 hp in a car for the American single carb version with smog controls - Jap 2 carb was more hp.
This is a liquid-cooled, re-engineered, boxer engine of the VW and Porche, and Contentental, Lycoming type of flat, opposed 4 cylinder, 4 cycle, short-stroke like the Rotax.
Eggenfeldner and some others continued with the Subaru engine conversions with engines having overhead cams, double cams, more horses, and all too heavy for our birds.
Didn't means to give a seminar - just check the website for Stratus2000 - Suberavid loves his.
