    Thanks Ed,

That shows why the wider V in the landing gear is so important to take that horizontal direction landing load.  Each axial load in the gear tubing structure has to resist the horizontal and vertical loads of the landing loads.  These have to resist in equal and oposite forces within the landing gear.  When you break these into horizontal and vertical components you see that to resist the horizontal component with a narrow V requires a much larger axial load.  That is why the single spring gear legs, like Grove gear, apply such a huge rotational load on the airframe where they connect.  The large spring gear itself is designed to take this load but it imparts it to the airframe in a narrow little space.  If you use this gear off airport, you better be sure your airframe is designed to take it.

    Ed,
I installed a baggage door after the fabric was on. I installed some pieces of oak between the stringer and the top longeron prior to cutting the fabric. Then I poly tacked the fabric to the stringer and the added oak pieces then I cut the fabric to allow wrapping around the stringer, vertical pieces and top longeron. That became the frame for the door. When I get the plane out again I will try to take better pictures than before.

Nice video. Funny thing with videos, even HD, is how much is not captured. Must be a perspective thing, or just the reality of trying to fit real life onto a digital file. I have taken some cockpit video with a GoPro2 in the Sedan. I've used hard slips quite a bit on landings (no flaps on the Sedan), and it just does not come across on the video. Yeah, you can tell that the nose is not lined up with the path of flight, but it's very minor and nothing like what it felt like. Same with a bounce while landing on floats, it just didn't come through. Which is fine with me

Nice video though, C5. Looks like a nice area to fly.

Hey "other guy", thanks for posting up, let us know how the plane flys when it warms up enough for ya!

Larry, hope you kick the bug in the ass and get back to working on the birds soon!  I think its a crap shoot on who is going to finish a project first.. My 800 conversion, your mangy fox, and ... well any of the planes that Doug is working on

I am "that other guy" from washington. After replacing the same parts as Larry, reshimming the gear box and putting it back together, my plane seems to be turbine smooth. I have not been able to flight test it however- as it is just too damn cold. Hopefully Larry gets better soon and has the same result.

Well I guess that stands to reason, seeing that both a Sube-powered Fat Avid upgrade or Avid+ would be a bit lighter and *I think* a bit shorter than John Larsen's Mk-V Pursang. As far as the H.S. struts, mine have no tendency to warp the H.S. itself. IIRC, the H.S. and elevator supplied with my Avid+ kit were entirely flat, whereas the H.S. on my Mk-IV did have some twist built in. I know this topic has been discussed on at least one of the Avid/KF forums, if you search the respective archives you might find something of interest. I can measure the H.S. or struts I have if you need, just let me know.

Look close at the 45 second mark and you will see look left and right real fast. A huge flock of birds flew up right in front of me I just about smoked a couple of them.

Jim, It is the best solution.  I have not seen any off the shelf 1/8" finger strainers.

Hi guys.  I'm up against the same issue with the Catalina's fiberglass tank- 1/8" NPT holes and not enough room to tap a larger hole for the standard finger strainers.  The elbows were pretty clogged, so I'm set on installing finger strainers somehow.  Is the modified strainer above still the best solution out there?

Installing finger strainers on Catalina fiberglass tank? Options?
I'm redoing N157AB's fuel system end to end after a fuel flow test only showed 3.8GPH.   Likely causes included lots of 1/4" barb fittings that had < 1/8" orifices on them, and plenty of varnish and gunk in the elbows at the tank outlets.

I'd like to add standard finger strainers to the tank, but the bungs on the Catalina fiberglass tank are only large enough to accommodate a 1/8" MIP fitting.  Nowhere near large enough in diameter to allow for 1/4", much less the 3/8" MIP that all the common finger strainers seem to be.

Has anyone heard of a 1/8" NPT finger strainer?  Or had luck improvising one?

Hey Doug thanks alot for that info,it was about 2 degrees down but it seem to pull the nose down when I hit the throttle which really felt wrong, when i pulled back on the throttle the pressure on the elevator was reduced ,by shiming the angle up  it helped quite a bit but is a long ways from hands off in cruise, I still need constant up pressure on the stick. I think my avid only has the 2 holes also and maybe  the horizontal stab struts are pushing up enough to cause the problem, more testing i guess

Were you leaking from the weep hole or body crimp? Is Rotax still offering the discount price for pump? Very timely for my pump failure last year, heck, I even bought a spare.

No engine offset? If you read the Pursang history HERE, Dean Wilson recommended 3* degrees offset to thrust line to counteract P-factor and torque, and 1.5-2* degrees down thrust for the Sube.

My KF3 had (3) holes for H.S. adjustment. When I got it it was in the bottom hole, I moved it up to the middle hole to raise the tail. On my Avid+, there is room for only (2) adjustment holes. When rigging my H.S., I kept the angle of incidence equal to the door sill which I believe to be the same as the thrust line. Thrust line is not identified in my Avid build manual, but that's the way Kitfox is so I went out on a limb and ASSumed. If I cork it in on the test flight tell the FAA it was a contributing factor...

Well got a few more flights on the avid today after we shimmed up the lower motor mounts to get prop 90 degrees to the thrust line, it was low about 2 degrees  and helped quite a bit on the amount up upward pressure on the elevator. Unfortunately it didn't get rid of it totally. We are now thinking of trying to lower the leading edge of the horizontal stabalizer.Question for Randy or any other avid plus guys.Just wondering if you know what hole the front of the  hortizontal  stab is bolted to,I can see one hole above for adjustment but not sure if there is one below, maybe its cover in fabric if there is three oprtions. Also the horizontal stab struts look like there pushing the forward stab up and pulling the back down,im pretty sure these were off his avid c ,just wondering if you guys  used the old struts or had to make new ones,

Ed, it's funny you should say that about a cheap bike frame. After seeing the pictures of one that was my first though. I might even have the bike around here with the right streamlined 4130 tubing to make one out of. Oh, not sure I told you, I build custom bicycles too.

I've been down sick since the first of the year.  Dying was an option I'm regretting not taking at this point.

I put in all of the new parts in the gearbox only to discover a leaking fuel pump.  I have the pump off my project plane ready to install but have not been able to work outside to finish it up.  I was hoping to work on it this weekend, but I can still barely breathe outside without coughing to the point of passing out.

If you look over at TKF, the other guy, from Washington state, with the same problem had great success with his gearbox.  I'm very hopeful...
