@Kenneth - Good luck on your purchase!

I took a 'wings folded' width measure the last time I had the wings mounted to my Avid+. At the time, I did not have the extruded PVC leading edge cuff installed but I did measure them separately and factor those in. The maximum wings folded width I wrote down in my log is exactly 99.0" inches with PVC cuff installed.

Also, my notes indicate that the maximum width of my Airdale W.I.B. (wider-is-better) main gear with Matco W62 6" wheels and Carlisle 4-ply 8.00x6 tires mounted, is exactly 75.0" inches from centerline to centerline (not outside edges) of the tires. Adjusting for the nominal tire width would give a maximum width of ~83.0" inches.

Thanks for the input, I found the information on adding metal.  As I checked the thickness for the tab they were all over the place.  I had replaced an aft rib where the tab was brokenn and it was .240 others were .220, .20 or just under.  I am using .30 material so can not put it on both sides except for one or two tabs. I am forming an angle on the bottom of the full plate and will make a partial plate on the other side with the angle on top.  The partial will go around the flalperon mounting plate.  It will still support the weak point.

I will let you know it it works.

I have removed wings for trailering - Best way is to put one on each inside wall, vertical, suspended by well-padded straps.   Oh - remove struts and jury struts from wings too.

What ChrisB said.. I also had good results using water wetter in the system along with the coolant / distilled water.

it will be right around 8'6" or so.. a normal avid wont clear the doors on a normal enclosed trailer, you have to special order the trailer with a full width door.

Even having the known folded width of a mk IV would be helpful but I haven't seen that anywhere that I can find either. I believe that the Pursang is 4" wider at the carry through for the wings, but that might not be spot on.

It will be whatever the width of a folded MKIV is, plus the additional cabin width of the Pursang. Pretty wide and probably will not fit inside any commercially available car towable trailer. Just my guess though. John Larson would know.

Following are my observations and not all of it may be fact, but it is what I found in my experience. This and $3.50 will get you a Mocha at the local coffee shop.

I believe pure distilled water has the best heat transfer of any "coolant". Coolants provide corrosion resistance and freeze protection but do not help with heat transfer, they actually inhibit it.

"Waterless" coolants like Evans boil at a higher themp than water (a nice benefit), but do not transfer heat as well, so more radiator or higher pressures are required all things being equal.

The pressure in a cooling system raises the temp a water(and coolant)will boil.

I found that running distilled water and 10% coolant in the summer had sufficient heat transfer capacity that I was able to run just the two cheek radiators on the hottest days where I live. And it gets HOT! In the winter I raised the coolant to 50% to prevent freezing. That combo worked quite well without all the extra radiators and provided sufficient corrosion protection.

With waterless coolant you may be able to run the cooling system at atmospheric pressure, but the heat transfer will not be as good.

If you run water and a small amount of coolant, heat transfer will be quite good and you won't need as much radiator, but unless you run a pressure cap, micro boiling could occurr at hot spots, even though water temp will indicate below boiling temp.

I think a pressure cap is a good idea and offers a margin of safety by raising boiling temp.

    Folded width of the Avid+/Airdale?
I'm one step closer to owning Pursang, the original "grown up" Avid. I'm working on where to store the plane though and wondering if it will fit in my trailer with the wings folded. I realize that since it was the first one it might be slightly different.
That being said, does anyone have a measurement of theirs folded up? I know my trailer is tall enough, just not sure about getting it in the rear door.
As for now I'm planning to fly it from Boise to St. Louis in February. I just have to tie up a few more things and then figure out the schedule and wait for weather.

    Thanks guys!

    Hey Cliff,
The Avid is a lot more squirley compared to those planes. The worst thing a pilot can do is think they can handle an Avid cause they have flown other taildraggers. It'll bite they're a$$ real quick. Unless it was a Pitts. They're worse than Avids. Lots of practice cures it though. Start off in grass then move to pavement. Otherwise, if you start on pavement you'll probably end up in the grass😂â—ï¸ Good luck, Bryce

Thanks Leni! So far everything is going smoothly. I just hope it's in as good a condition as it seems. I don't mind minor work to fix cosmetics but I don't want to have to get there and find out I can't fly it half way across the country. Luckily I have family in Utah so if it comes to it I can fly it there and do any work to it that it might need before a long journey. I don't foresee any problems though. I'm getting new tires on it and I will probably take some VG's that I'm making for it and try to experiment with them on the underside of the wing on the trip home for cruise speed. Hopefully that will help a little.

    Jim,
We had to redirect and seal off the radiators to get the temp to stay in range.
I am having the lower cowl enclosed for the reason you stated.

Wonder how your coolant temps will be with no cowl lip and the muffler disrupting the airstream at that point.  Please  keep posting on your experiences with this engine setup.  Quite a few of us are interested in how the 670 works out.  Jim Chuk

Joey, I have upgraded both my rudder and elevator to the MKIV tail feathers. they are currently covered and waiting for paint. what exactly are you looking for? measurements? traced templates? ... they would be a piece of cake to fab from scratch and wouldn't cost too much either. let me know what you are looking for and I will do what I can to help. you can easily just cut everything off of your current torque tubes and weld the smaller tubing coming off it into whatever shape/size you want. I also have the elevator trim added to mine. nice upgrade.

I did not use the oil injection on this engine.
I decided to just add add oil to the wing tanks and just shake the wings to mix.

Thanks much folks.   I think the only caution I'll take is to make sure that the left flaperon and the right flaperon balance in the same way, so that they're symmetrically "balanced".

There is over 20 plus hrs installing the pipe on my Avid.
What started out as a 8 hr install, turned into a fitting and welding challenge.

Rotax Rick is a super nice person to deal with.
Having Raced karts for many years I new on a 2 stroke engine I would not get the performance out of the 670 with out the tuned pipe.

Here are some pictures of my plane and engine.

First you can see how low the exhaust sits below the cowl.

    Front view

Now 3 views with the cowl off.

During first flight,Got the temp up plane seemed to roll about 3-4 seconds and it was air born.
Had to release back pressure so I could find the horizon.
This will be a great plane once I get it on some amphib floats.

    582 Gray Head Cooling
Folks, my firewall forward project is coming along and I'm getting close to firing it up for the first time after first completing final electrical and fuel line connections.

The PO had 3 radiators on this '99 C-model. What appears the OEM issue has/was mounted on the belly and also two in the cheek/nose. This seems like overkill to me so I've removed the cheek radiators and will operate with the belly mount. I've also installed a thermostat which I'm reasonably certain the previous build did not have. Further it also seems crazy to have those cheek radiators directing hot/warm air directly into the carb intake - talk about a power suck! Now at least the carbs will be getting plenty of cool air.

I'm soliciting opinions from the collective on this setup. Will this belly radiator be adequate enough? I've posted some before pics below before I started on it and took the firewall off. I've reinstalled the belly radiator in the same position.

Also, I read somewhere a 582 user was running is cooling system unpressurized, the idea being less likelyhood of coolant pushing past seals and into the crankcase. Thoughts on this? If this is a good idea, exactly how would you set this up? Simply a non-spring loaded expansion chamber cap?

Oh, one other thing - what's the concensus on installing firesleeves on the fuel lines firewall fwd in these aircraft? Necessary?

    Thanks,
    Paul

  24. EDMO added a post in a topic Leading Edge Slats

The Zenith Slats are a lot different than the wide-open "SLOTS" in front of the outer Stintson wings.....Stintson put those in to keep the ailerons working when the inner wing had stalled.
Our STOL method was to get up some speed in the old Stintson 108 and grab the flap handle and jank in about 20 degrees - gave some quick lift for takeoff.   It couldn't compete with the Avid / Foxes in STOL....

I sent off a purchase agree to John tonight via email. Hopefully that will come back soon....it's getting closer to being "home".
As you all probably have noticed by now, I'm more than willing to share what I know. If it all works out well with this plane I'm more than willing to share any information about it that I can. Especially for those of you that are building yours and have the opportunity to make a few "little" changes.

I'll keep you all posted. It will be at least the second week in February before I can pick it up though as I have a local commitment until then that doesn't allow me enough time to go fly it back. Plus I might have to do a little painting to it in Utah before heading cross country in it! Anyone have any good paint scheme ideas? I just don't like the brown and want to have it a little more customized. But I'm probably WAY ahead of myself already.
