Thanks much Jim, I've got the drawing and am giving it the 16" stretch.

Thanks for all the support.  I'll take your advice and ammend a C drawing.    But I still need that  3 view drawing of the plane (top, front and side) that I can redraw,  I didn't get one with the build manual that I got.   I know I've seen one somewhere, most likely on this site.   I thought it would be in one of the manuals, but now I'm having trouble downloading them to look again.  Can someone please direct me to the right place to find one of these drawings, or email me the drawing?   It'd really be appreciated.
On the prop question, it must be because of the huge reduction that Hirth and Powerfin recommended the 4 blade prop.  I first set the pitch at 15 degrees and the engine wouldn't rev above 4500.  Next I repitched to 13.2 (was shooting for 13, but came in a tad high) and the engine would max out at 6200.  Hirth recommends 6500 rpm max, so I think I'll leave it where it is for now and maybe tweak it later if I want.

AVID C ready for registration, need drawings
Hello folks, my 10 year build of an Avid C, STOL wing,  Serial #335, is finally coming to an end. The first thing I did when I started work on the barely started kit was to stretch the fuselage the 16".  So I guess that the profile and plan drawings that I need for FAA registration would actually be Mark IV drawings, correct?   I'm thinking I'd have to square up the rudder on the drawings, but other than that they should work, no?  If anyone has that page of the manual readily available and could email it to me I'd really appreciate it.   I put a Hirth 2706 65hp engine in it. The engine came with a 3.65/1 PSRU, and Powerfin convinced me to put a 4 bladed prop on it because of that big reduction.   It's a ground adjustable prop, should climb like crazy, and I'm more interested in low-n-slow than speed. The info gleaned from these pages has been invaluable, I can't imagine completing this build without access to all of your experiences.   Now I've just got to get my Sport Pilot's License!  I'm looking for instruction somewhere in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic.   I started lessons near here (VT), but the Cub I was training in crashed.  The student and instructor were OK, but it shattered my faith in that flying school.   Here's a picture of my plane:

Thanks so much Leonard, I found a picture of them taken with the pieces sitting on graph paper, so I'm good to go to make them up.    I've got tubing with a close fit ID, I was just going to cut the existing ones in half which gives me 2 studs with about 5/8" of the solid rod buried in the tube, and I think I'll do the rosette weld as well just for the heck of it.

I noticed on your info that you've got an Ivo prop.   I'm putting a rebuilt Hirth 2706  65HP engine in my Model C  Stol,  and haven't decided on a prop yet.  The engine mechanic recommended a 5 blade Kiev prop which he said would pull like hell, which it ought to at about $1,800 bucks!   But I'm still in the beginnings of  research on props so any advice would be appreciated.   Thanks again.

Do F7A bellcranks come with longer F-37 pushrods?
Hi folks, I'm building an Avid C and last year got new F7A bellcranks from Brett at Airdale.   He's not returned any of my calls or emails for months now so I'm hoping one of you can answer this, but wouldn't they always come with longer F-37 pushrods as well?  Mine didn't, and I can't remember if I even asked about them, so maybe it's my own fault.   But with the new F7A's and the  original F-37's (the 3" long vertical pushrods that connect the F-7A's to the flap bellcrank)  when the flap lever is in the down position the bottom ends of the F7A's contact the diagonal braces at the bottom of the fuselage.   I've seen a picture of them and the new F-37's  are almost 2" longer than the old, so they keep that from happening.   So if I need them, does anyone have some they'd be willing to sell, or can I  cut the old ones in half and splice in with some thickwall tubing with the right ID and have the ends welded in?  And if I do that, would the ends be held in by a rosette weld down the tube or just by a weld where the "bolt" comes out of the tube?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.   And here's hoping that Brett can return to work!  Best,  Mike

Thanks much folks.   I think the only caution I'll take is to make sure that the left flaperon and the right flaperon balance in the same way, so that they're symmetrically "balanced".

    Balancing Flaperons
Hi folks, I'm building an Avid Model C kit that I picked up a few years ago and I've mounted a flaperon counterweight to the flaperon  just like it says in the manual, but instead of taking off some of the lead weight, I need even longer or heavier weights to balance the flaperons.  This is using the sawhorse method where the point of contact between the flaperon and level sawhorse surface  is way out by the leading edge of the flaperon.  When I set that up my flaperons don't balance with the weight hanging too low, they sit flat on the sawhorse and I'd have to add more weight to the counterweight to get the 1/4" gap on the trailing edge that is recommended.        If I hang the flaperon on the wing the flaperon hinges are too stiff to allow for balancing.   Wouldn't I need to balance the flaperon by balancing it on 2 knife edges that are on sawhorses but are directly in line with and under the flaperon spar?  If I do it that way I'm truly balancing the weight of the flaperon on it's pivot, and my guess is I'd have to remove about 1/2" of the lead weight.  Please help me out.   Thanks,   Mike

  8. MikeRSawyer added a post in a topic More legroom in an Avid

Hi Leonard, my thought was that in order to get more legroom I'd necessarily have to scoot the engine farther forward. Your mention of the KF seat though reminds me that when I bought the kit I also received the fiberglass seat, which I assumed was the original. I was told it was way uncomfortable, so I rejected using it and stuck in up on a shelf in the shed, and just assumed the sling seat was better. I'm pulling that fiberglass seat down today and trying it out. Just by losing the 2-3" of cushioning I should help myself out quite a bit, then I might only have to move the firewall 3" like John told me he did on the Avid Flyer sight. I assume he has a 582 and had the room to move the pedals and firewall 3" without changing anything in the engine compartment. Both of these websites are extremely valuable to someone like me who is new to airplane building. If you hadn't mentioned the fiberglass seat option I would never have thought to try it. For whatever reason when I bought the kit I got the strong impression that the sling seat was "way better", so I rejected the fiberglass. Many thanks for the suggestion. I've already done the 16 inch stretch, with the help of a friend in my EAA chapter who welds, so I was thinking that if I had to move the engine I had a little leeway. Hopefully now the stock mount will work. The Hirth 3502 has the same mounting as the 582, but the shape of the engine is obviously different. We'll see. If anyone knows of a 3502 in an Avid I'd love to hear about it. Thanks again, Mike

    More legroom in an Avid
Hi folks, I'm working on an Avid Model C kit and would like to gain some legroom for my 6'1" frame. If anyone has already done this I'd appreciate some feeback on what to look out for and where to get an extended engine mount made up. I'm thinking of using the Hirth 3502 engine. Thanks
