Here is a page of radiator shop addresses, from the book "Converting auto engines for Experimentanl aircraft" by Richard Finch, 4 th edition.     I also read in here about using a Honda Civic rad for a 2.7 Soob and another using Motorcycle radiator.  I have other books on this too.

Sorry Doug, No one has told me how to downsize photos or scans on W7, and probably too dumb anyway!

    Doug,
I believe summit racing and some other shop also do custom work - probably not cheap!   Maybe Harrison too?
Is that a nose wheel I see in the Aero photo?  Can you give me distance to mains?
    Thanks,
    EDMO
I read the page on triple-pass mods - Cant agree on leaving out the thermostat tho - You might get away with it on a Chevy V8, but most modern engines are made to run at a certain temperature, and they need it.

Here's some pics with measures. Also, I misspoke earlier about the Dzus fasteners on the rad mounts. You can see in the photos they are fastened to the cowling with Allen head bolts. Haven't had all that apart in a while, been working on the fuse and wing repairs,

It's a bit different than the rad mounts. Air is fed thru a NACA duct on the co-pilot side lower cowl into the cooler which is situated longitudinally in a fiberglass mount inside the cowl. You have to loosen the two lock nuts on the cushion mounts to remove the lower cowl, the cooler just floats therewith the cowl off.

These folks say they will build whatever you want in an aluminum radiator.  There's at least 3 or us on the board looking for new radiators. Perhaps a group buy can be arranged.

Here's an interesting article about radiator modification to improve cooling. The more "passes", the better:

and sometimes we get what we pay for   Especially when ordering from China.  You have NO clue what alloy your getting.  Saving a couple hundred on a radiator that may fall apart from shitty welds or a really crappy alloy will probly end up getting expensive quick as you know damn good and well that when it fails it will NOT be when your 8,000 over an endless dry lake bed you can land the space shuttle on.

Well don't order a 1/2 sheet of plywood from Spruce or anywhere for that matter that it has to be shipped.  Made that mistake with ACS and about died when I got the bill, to their credit they did make it right even though a good deal of the blame rested on my shoulders.  Seem to recall the freight was about $175.00...  I know you said Luan which you can probably get locally.  They do make a nice dense plywood for underlayment  for new floors but I don't think it comes in anything less than 1/4".

I believe Randy said he paid $700 for his.  I saw Chinese aluminum MC rads for a lot cheaper.

Randy (suberavid) had aluminum ones made for his fat avid.  you may drop him a note and see who did them and get a price from him.  I think they were sourced local but I cant swear to it.  I do know they are very nice, not cheap, but work very well!

Ed - Can you provide a link to this rule that the tow vehicle must be licensed to the GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight) of the entire system?

This would totally negate the idea of registering and licensing a trailer to a Gross Weight.  If this were the case I would counter that every 1/2 ton truck (usually licensed at 6500) with any trailer would be in violation.

I am a TDR (Turbo Diesel Register - The oldest Dodge-Cummins club) member since it's inception and there is constant discussion on their website and published magazine in regard to towing and licensing.  This is the first I have ever heard of such a GCVW regulation.

    Hi Ed,
It is the spring loaded Rans nose fork. I cut it down shorter to fit the Avid. It lost half its spring travel with the chop job, but can handle such a large tire I am not concerned about the travel loss. I am not aware of a rans nose fork that disconnects from the linkage. This will be connected to the linkage all the time. I wish it wasn't, but that's the way they do it as far as I know. This is for an S-6/S-12 and to my knowledge it is the current version. It was purchased last year.

I would sure guess he wasn't trying to land on the hill the plane rolled down. Looks like he either lost an engine or had something else catastrophic happen to him. Even with an engine loss doesn't seem like he would have had that kind of impact. There is always the possibility of a physical incapacitation happening.

Anyway it happened, it's a shame and I feel for the family. Sounds like he was just a good guy doing what he loved in life in general. This is the second reminder in the past week that life is short. I lost a friend of mine when he and another friend were biking to work. Both of them were hit and killed instantly by a truck at 6AM. I don't want to go out on my way to work, but at least he was biking which he was very avid with and loved doing. Shame, between the two of them I think they left 6 or 8 children, their wives are really good friends and they lived next to each other as neighbors as well. Live life while you can my friends! I always see Leni's signature and it's a great reminder, our time here is short, and none of us know when we'll be gone and how we are leaving.

I towed my 26' enclosed car hauler over 600 miles with a total weight of 26,360 in the truck and trailer. I suppose if anyone would have stopped me and asked me to open it up I might have been in a little trouble but since it A) wasn't for hire. and B) wasn't over the legal length. They just don't care that much.

I sure wouldn't worry about a 10,000 GVW trailer if I were you, as long as it's legal for length and width they aren't going to just pull you over to check you out.

The radiators on Pursang are some that John had a local radiator shop fabricate. They are thick and very heavy copper and steel. Basically they appear to be half of a normal radiator. Next time I pull the top cowling off I'll measure them and see how big they are. I'd guess they are about 9"w x 12"h x 3" d. I do believe he told me they are dual bypass but I don't remember for sure. I just know they are heavier than they would have to be. If I could find something in aluminum that's the same size I wouldn't mind the "diet" on the plane. Especially since it's supposedly still quite nose heavy according the John. One of these days I need to find scales to do a W&B though.

Helpful. Thanks for sharing. I'm curious - what are the dimensions of those radiators?  And, are there inlet seals keeping air flow from going around - forcing through radiator?

I like the dzus fastener idea. This setup appears efficiently vibration isolated.

In Missouri and a lot of other states, the tow vehicle license weight is for the total weight of the vehicle and anything it is towing - For instance, if I have a 5300 lb truck and a 4000 lb towed load, then I need 12,000 license on the truck instead of 6000.  Not commercial, then you don't need to stop at weight stations either.
I towed 17,000 lbs with 6000 lb Dodge 3/4 ton truck with a 12,000 lb license plate thru Alaska, Canada, and several states back to Missouri, without ever getting a second glance - Lucky, I guess!
And, passenger cars, RVs (trucks with RV license too) have no weight limit on license here.
    You don't need a commercial driver's license.

Guess I'm OK on the towing part.  Up to 10,000 lb GVWR for the trailer with a Class A License.  The trailer is 10,000 lb GVWR.

Your not hauling commercially and your not pulling doubles, what would they get you for if you were pulled over?  In AK as long as its not for hire, and your not pulling doubles, I can pull a 60' boat down the road as long as I have pilot cars and a wide load permit.
