    Thanks for the post! It's always good to hear the stories where the blood pressure increases but everything comes out alright in the end. A great reminder why we preflight aircraft and how a little thing we miss might turn tragic.

    Sorry about the crooked, double photos and multiple posts to get the message out.
    Any lose items in our airplanes can have tragic consequences and I got very lucky I had enough aileron travel left over and a powerful rudder to compensate.
    Turned out to be a great day flying with a burst of elevated blood pressure in the middle.

    John made the Pursang with 2-piece gear so he could change it out or fix it easier in the bush - It shouldn't be too hard to jack / block it up and take off one side.

    That and a 6' pipe, I can see it now!!! I guess there is a huge advantage to having two piece mains. I'm pretty sure I can get mine into a press fairly easy.

    Did you post pictures up with this? I'm curious what you have for a trim wheel since I haven't ever seen one with a wheel, at least not in an Avid.

    The plan last Sunday was to pioneer with my son (Maule) some new landing sites.
    I was setting up for a landing and found that the stick would not move to the left but it would to the right.
    I found that left rudder would give me decent left roll so landed at a nearby grass strip.
    I would have had a hard time controlling the
    I immediately found that the 1-1/2" diameter trim adjustment knob had come un screwed after 19 years and somehow found a convienent place that would jam the controls on my Kitfox.
    I will hysol a thin aluminum plate to the tubes just below the aileron bell crank to cover the pocket that the knob got stuck in.
    The batteries we use for head phones or other lose items like small flashlights could do the same harm.
    This is my first time trying to post photos and it did not work so will keep trying.

    I don't remember the first time I went into actual IMC, I don't recall being overly bothered by it.  I do vividly remember my first real IMC approach - popped out on final at about 600 feet on approach to Orlando Executive.  My first thought was 'hot dang, there's the runway right where it is supposed to be'  followed immediately by 'wow, I don't remember those buildings being so close there on the left!'.  There were where they were supposed to be, but they looked a lot closer at that moment!
     
    It's the best rating you'll ever get.  Seaplane rating is the most fun though!

    I am doing part 141 so I had to use their Cessna courseware which is done partially by Kings. I am using a current ASA test prep book for the written with only the correct answers highlighted which just makes it a huge memorization project. I will prep for the oral using other means. I am flying 2-3 days a week in a Cessna 172SP. Hoping to be check ride ready by May but not setting a hard date. I am also taking online Embry Riddle classes and still trying to stay proficient as a Flight Engineer and raise my family all at the same time.

    Ed, I wish that my problem was the tires touching on the outside so they would wear enough so that I could turn them around. As it is they don't even ride in the center of the tire when the plane is unloaded, thus the inquiry about the geometry. If you look back at some of the first pictures in the Pursang thread you can see how it was sitting, that was without fuel and nothing in the plane. Now that it has fuel in it all the time it's much worse. Probably 2 degrees, just a guess.
     
    Larry, How in the world did you bent your gear with a 6' piece of pipe? I guess you're another person on the forum I don't want to arm wrestle with!

    Joey are you using anything as far as studying for the written or have you finished that?
     
    I'm about the same, about 10 hrs. under the hood with a safety pilot but no true IMC. I've been working through the king school IFR program and its a wealth of info. I'm hoping to get everything finished up this summer in my cherokee. The required 50 mile cross countrys make the time fly by.

    I suspended mine from the hanger rafters with ratchet tiedowns attached at the forward spar carry through just inside the wing attach tubes. This I did while designing and building my bush gear. I did put a 2x4 frame under it just in case. And the wings were folded.

          When the Pursang was made, Grove, I think, was still using 2024 material - the heat treating after bending is also to relieve stress and make sure it retains its shape.
          Current Grove gear is now made with 7075 material, because it can be made a little lighter, and heat treatment is done in batches of gears to lower cost of treating.
    If you send them an old, 2024 gear to straighten and bend, then the cost goes higher, since it has to be treated separately as the treatment (temperature/times?) is different than the 7075 aluminum.  A new gear leg might be about the same price?
          I have talked to Robby Grove about this in the past.  Grove also makes shims for the gear.
         Somehow, you have to get a medium point on your camber so you have the least tire wear at the weight you normally fly your plane.  
    Kitfox owners in the past have reversed their tires at every condition inspection to even out the wear on them.  
          If you are landing mostly on concrete, you will find that the outside of the tires wear more from initial touchdown until full weight is on them, if you have set them at zero camber with weight on the gear, because the gear will spring down when not under load.

    Thanks for the information. I think I'm going to try the shims first since a guy that works with my wife has a full machine shop in his basement and basically said to come "play". He does stuff for free for his friends just to see what he can go. It's the easiest route for now. Besides I don't have a way to support the entire aircraft while I pull a gear leg off right now. I saw the post the other day on jacking the aircraft and the tripod that someone had (can't remember who it was) and I really like that idea, I just don't need another thing to carry around with me when I move, which is always just an inevitability with me. Not to mention I would have to redo the brakes when I pulled the gear since my gear is the brake line. Shims are just going to be quicker for now, but I'd rather have it right in the long run.
     
    Any guesses at to if a 20 ton press would to the bending I need?

    I will never forget my first time at the controls into IMC either. 45 minutes of solid soup. I was overloaded at about 35 minutes and asked my flight instructor to take the controls for two minutes so I could get things to stop spinning. Vertigo has certainly set in. I have over 100 hours in the solid stuff now and it doesn't get to me anymore, but I'm with you on never wanting to go IMC in an Avid or anything without full instrumentation.

    Nice looking planes. It is oriented sideways but I just pick up my laptop and turn it to "correct" the picture.
     
    I'm very curious about this could be fatal incident. I'm all about learning from others as much as possible, even if sometimes I have to make my own mistakes!
