good to hear your geting back at it!  Hope the knee is all better.  Before you go to far, if your having knee issues you may want to try geting in and out of the plane.  Akflyerbob stopped building on his because he cant fold his knee to get in and out of it due to the cross bar under the instrument panel.  I hope you can get in and out as I really want to hear some flight reports on it and see if I can use those against Bob to get back to work on his plane, I think it wil be a ton of fun around here.

I have gone through the knee spacer of last May 31, and the total replacement of  Aug. 20. The surgeon and my Internal Disease Doctor told me to do NOTHING until at least Feburary of this year. I complied. I then waited until it was warm enough, thanks to global warming (yeah right). I returned to the shop today, I had to clear away junk that my wife, and workers on my barn , had deposited just inside the door. I took 3 photos with my stupid smart phone, but it refused to send them to my computer. I started to check the left sponson to the photo that I have of Avid's final prototype. The depth of the sponson is close to that of the photo. It needs a little reshaping inboard, near the main hull.

Trackwelder, did you ever get the info you needed? If not, let me know.

I think in this case you would be safer to jack and block from the floor.   I was talking about hoisting for people with overhead hoists that are safe.

Welcome to the board Wade! I echo what's been said, post pictures and don't be afraid to ask anything. I've been here for only a few months but learned a lot as well.

I know when I was flying and working on a Waco we would just wrap a strap around the engine mount and jack that way, but I don't have access to an engine hoist currently.

I'm curious about using a strap or something through the front spar carry through like Ed was talking about. I suppose I could weld up an eyebolt with a long enough throw to get it to work. I really would worry more about the roof of the barn that I am hangared in that the spar mount for only jacking one side up.

    Wade,
Look up and read 21.303(b) and you will soon know why I am a homebuilder too!
It OKs "owner-made replacement parts" for Part 23 certified aircraft.

    Leni,
do you use eyebolts with threads on the front, or the pin-type with the keeper?

Hey Richard. I never heard back from the administrator, so I posted the question in the forum for other users to comment on. A reply came back quickly to make sure you have javascript enabled. You can see his comments if you go over there, and look for a thread called "New user trying to register".

Thanks Leni! I'm not running a clutch but I do have a GSC in-flight adjustable prop that I can flatten out and idle the engine down really low which removes all the vibration that you refer to. Bryce

I have the eye bolts in the spars on all 4 corners and use a spreader bar to pick it from the top for most of my work.  If I am just swapping from wheels to skis then picking off the engine has worked well for me.  I am not too keen on just picking from the forward spar mounts as I an chicken about bending up the bird cage area.

the vibration is the worst at lower RPM and the MK IV mount helps more with that.  If you are running a clutch then the issue is a mute point as there is virtually NO vibration at idle using the clutch.

at times running no thermostat can cause overheating issues too.  The thermostat will restrict flow and help the engine run cooler as well.  If you find that your still having overheating issues you can get machine washers to put in the thermostat housing to slow down the flow and give the radiator a little more time to cool the water.  I know that method is used in racing sometimes.

    RTS,
Welcome to the site - If you have been following it, you know that most questions get answered - sometimes in several different ways.   There is a lot of good knowledge floating around here.  I have learned a lot about the 2-bangers since I joined.
Hope you can add to the site.

    Hello Everyone

I've been searching (trolling) around this site for a few years looking for build information. I've got a MARK IV with a 582, which I acquired from a friend who gave up on it long ago. It’s all there, he bought it new sometime in the early 90's after a visit to the factory. The wings are about ready for covering, that’s what I've been working on lately. I’m a A&P mechanic by trade, most of my career has been spent working on corporate aircraft. I've done a lot research on the Avid, this website's been a big help. Thanks!

My understanding of why Avid went with the new style mount was to get rid of some of the engine vibration. Jim Chuk

Thanks Jim! Is there that much more vibration between the Dinavibe and the standard mount? I had a normal amount of vibration with Dynavibe and I've never really heard anybody complain about the vibration with the standard mount. Thanks!

Thanks Ed, temperatures would not be that low. Rotax recommends 135° and since that ambient temperature would be only 45° away from that I'm not too worried about the temperature. I have 145° thermostat that I got from Napa and the standard Rotax 135° thermostat, and the opening difference between the two is about two times the difference. So I'm wondering, in the deep heat of the summer, if I just totally removed the thermostat will the heating problem resolved itself. I do have the radiators baffled off Like Chris Bolkan showed. I'm wondering if the engine needs the back pressure from the thermostat or for some other reason it would need the thermostat other than the heat, because down here in the south we got plenty of heat!

I am thinking its something that you have set in your browser preferences.  I am not having any issues with firefox, Internet exploder or safari.  Check the permissions settings in your preferences and see if something goofy is checked there.
