make sure the bleed screw is the highest point in the cylinder or air will stay above it

If you remove the inserts and put the tube in place of them, you can just drill the tube thru the same holes as the original - might have to go to next size rivets if you have enlarged the holes.   Drill a 1/4" hole which you 'think' will match the attach fitting, and start enlarging it with a round file to get it to match - you can get one side close and then finish by drilling and reaming all the way thru.
Be sure your wings are square or equal as well as the dihedral.

I was scheduled for some tests today - after getting up earlier than my usual time, I drove thru thunderstorms and rain so hard you could barely see the road.    I went to Fenton instead of Tesson facility where I was supposed to go -
My wife wrote on her facebook, "What is wrong, when you are supposed to have a brain scan, and go to the wrong place?"
Now, I may be scheduled for Hearing Tests!

    Up to 25,000ft unpressurized today
In an altitude chamber not my Avid! I was due my 5 year Physiological refresher trainer this month. I drove up to Beale AFB today to attend the training. The morning was all academics reminding us about sleep schedules, circadian rhythm, nutrition and anything else that mess with you when flying. Then came the chamber ride. We were on 100% O2 for 30 minutes and then up to 8000ft. We took our masks off and then they take you up to 25,000ft in a little over a minute! I made it about 4 minutes after level off before I went back on. The whole point is just to learn what your symptoms are since everyone is a bit different. It's an uncomfortable feeling for me. They give you a piece of paper with some silly questions on it and some basic math problems. The guy next to me tried to stick it out and he turned blue and just barely got his mask on without help. It was pretty cool watching his color come back after just a few breaths on the mask. After everyone recovers they take you down to 18,000 and you take your mask off again and they turn down the lights and do some cool acuity demos and then it's back down the sea level. The whole thing lasts about an hour. After leaving the house at 5 am this morning and doing that and then driving home again I am beat. Some good training though and you get a free buzz!!

Pumping up from the caliper with the red fluid from a.c. spruce. I can get the air out of the lines (nyloflow) but it comes back after I apply the brakes a time or two. All I can figure is that it is sucking air in somewhere.  Suggestions on how to isolate the leak?

I'm fairly sure my wings already have that done to them. Just that the right one wasn't properly drilled the first time so the hole was enlarged. Thus the idea of inserting bushings to take the stress off and fix the oversized hole all at the same time.

That did clear it up. Thanks

Get a small hand pump oil can. Fit a 1/8 clear line to it and the bleeder down below at the caliper. Open bleed screw at the master(pedal). Pump the fluid up from the bottom to the master cylinder. Type F auto trans fluid has been used if you don't have aviation hydraulic. J 13 I think. Never use brake fluid.

Are you pumping the fluid in from the caliper or are you pumping from the master and bleeding at the caliper?

    Air in Brake lines
    Guys,

I keep bleeding the brakes and get all the air out of the system but as soon as I start to taxi I can see air in the line again and the brake goes soft. This only happens on the right brake, the left one is fine.  Does this meant it has a leak somewhere?  What's the best way to find it?  no brake fluid ever leaks out.  This is an old Matco set of brakes.

    Thanks,

  14. birddog486 added a post in a topic Stewart Systems paint?

It's not a hard process but it is alot different using the Stewarts paint as opposed to a paint like Emron. I finished painting mine last summer and It turned out great once I figured out how to apply it.

Stewarts has multiple videos on applying it and I used a combination of all due to the temperature being close to 90 with high humidity. I painted the wings first and by the second wing I had a winning process nailed down.

I sprayed very light coats of Insignia white over the grey Ekofill letting each one get fly paper tacky before the next coat and when I had 100% coverage I put on a wet coat. Each additional coat would take longer to tack up and by the final coat it was taking more than an hour before it was ready.

I had a hard time resisting the urge to put on heavy coats and the first wing put me in my place. If you can continue with the light coats until you have color saturation and then one or two wet coats letting it get FLY PAPER STICKY without paint on your finger between them you'll win with it and there wont be a need for sanding. Be sure to use Isopropyl alcohol before you paint also.

    Leni,
Call UAA Aviation Dept. and ask them what they use for a conversion coating - I think that is what they called it - I haven't worked with old aluminum for so long that I have forgotten.   I have just been using Alumi-Prep, and Alodine, primer and Stewarts on new aluminum.
We painted my Ercoupe with Ford enamel from the auto paint store - looked great - not Imron, or any of the Poly stuff -
But, guess old style Dodge or Chevy or VW paint would do just as well.....Not the new water-based ones!

    Kenneth,
It is a horizontal tube inside the spar that replaces the inserts for the attach pin - I cant describe it very well, but you want the end toward the wingtips to be a sort of rounded fishtail instead of a square cut.
A short piece of 4130 or mild steel tube that is a slip-fit to epoxy / rivet to the spar, and should be painted on the inside.

Thanks for the Drawing, I had a rough idea, but wasn't sure enough to bend the firewall without having pedals, I am using an E box so I do not have the starter at the rear. Nice artwork

  18. akflyer added a post in a topic Anyone tried one of these lights??

Just a quick update.  I did a bench test with the original controller and 2 of the vision X lights.  Using them both on at the same time total amp draw was .9 amps.  In the wig wag it was hard to get a good reading but it was bouncing between .4 and .5 amps on the fluke meter.  I did not get a chance to install them and fly with it yet, but I can tell you right now that the vision X lights will be AWESOME recognition lights and they work AWESOME as landing / taxi lights on the snow.  I don't know how long the original controller will last before it lets out the magic blue smoke, but I will order up one of the new ones and have it as stand by if my lights stop blinking.  they are more of a 3 pulse each strobe light swapping back and forth after 3 pulses each so they should really work well as recognition lights.  I will have them mounted on the plane when I get home and will see if I can get some video of them in action in the day light.

    Ed,
Are you talking about an insert going horizontally into the spar or vertically into the spar pin hole that needs to be V'ed? I'm not sure I understand.

I do understand your fix High Country, it’s a good idea. I’m going to have to check to see if the fuel tank attachment area covers the rivet holes for the reinforcement plate. I’m glad I finally chimed in on this web site, the knowledge on the Avid is impressive. It’s much appreciated, thanks all.

Not a good idea to drill holes in the vertical position on the spar - However, with the steel reinforcement there should be no stress on the tube .   I don't see any need to drill there when you can offset two rows on each side of top and bottom.
Yes Leni - I had totally forgotten about the steel tube insert that was a fix listed a long time ago - makes sense to me!   And, this should be glued in as well as SS riveted.
    EDMO
NOTE:  If you put a steel tube insert into the spar, don't square the end toward the wingtip - this should be more of a V-shape and rounded to prevent a total round stress point.

The final coats are thin - but we put it on too thin - spray it a little thicker than you think you should and overlap it a lot.
For Yellow or Red, you need a coat of white first, and sand between coats if you let it dry overnight.

If you want to call and talk to one of the guys who did the spraying, I can give you his number on a PM.

The little reinforcing tabs are already supposed to be riveted in as well as hysol so no worries there the rivet holes are a non issue. also you can just file out the hole bigger with a small round file, I used a chain saw file, to fit the bushing how/where you want it and then just hysol it in, if its a tight fit the stress is being exerted into the spar and reinforcement material anyways so the hyhsol is mainly just holding it into place when wings are folded back. make it extend up through the top if you want and add more hysol or a second steel strap. this would eliminate the need to remove the current plates.
