Hello from Dale S in SW Mo
Hello everyone.  I'm Dale from SW Mo, near Joplin.  Just purchased an Avid Flyer model B (I think) with HH wings, rotax 582 gray head.  Plane had sat for a spell and sold by widow of previous owner.  We got it annualed and in the air last week.  Flys fair.  More work to do.  Brakes don't, cooling barely does, nose wheel strut is bent some.  But it flys, engine seems strong.  Have a little more work to do to take it to a good airplane.  I appreciate this site, it looks like you guys have already fought the battles and figured a bunch of things out.  Thanks for letting me join.

If you cant go flying, then at least go to the airport and talk about flying - maybe do that on here? - If no one is at the airport, then talk to your plane and maybe give it some TLC until the wind suits you.
You got to know your limitations for safe flight.
When I was a young pilot doing my commercial training, the airport rented a Cessna 150 to me when there was 45 - 50 knot winds to scout a forest fire and look for some lost horses - Today, I wouldn't even think of doing that.  The day before that, my instructor and I flew the same plane backwards the length of the runway in the same winds.
They tell me that in Kansas the wind gauge is a log chain tied to a stump - If the chain is blowing straight out, then it is too windy to fly!

Remember, statistically you are more likely to be killed driving to the airport than flying from it.

This happened in my neck of the woods recently. I look at people like this and sometimes think that I have no business in a plane. If a proficient pilot like this can make a mistake and had this outcome, the odds of me making a mistake are almost guaranteed.  But I rationalize with the fact that he was doing aerobatics and I don't, and he was in a high performance airplane that is probably more unforgiving than my Kitfox, so that makes it digestible, somewhat. Still a sad, sad thing for his family. I have not flown in several months and I get nervous on these hiatuses. I try to get pattern time in once or twice a week but this past several months have been bad with the wind, Ex-Wife, Kids, Ex-Wife, Work, Ex-Wife, House repairs, Ex-Wife, ....if only I could get rid of one thing? Hmmm. Anyway, anybody else have a remedies for the flying hiatus butterflies?

Jeff - the two seat cushions are in my garage gathering dust so you are welcome to them. I don't have the seatbelts or even remember what happened to them.

I think the Peterson STC allows use of 87 octane depending on the engine model.  The EAA STC requires 91 or new pistons.. I think.

I think the GT with the 0200 and a climb prop is going to be a GREAT bird!  It has been awhile since I saw the one that was at Soldotna, but I didnt remember it being bigger than the Fat Avid.. Thats way cool and should give you lots of room with no issues on balance other than you may have to put the battery in the tail.  Randy should be able to hook you up with the guy that built his gear, its nice and stout and the extended gear looks much better than the short stubby gear they come with!

Go to this web site and look in upper left corner of schematic.  That is the cover you need.  It is part 19, 20, etc.

The Merlin fuselage is about 2 feet longer than the AVID plus.  My jaw about hit the ground when I say the wing depth.  They make the wing on my previous avid look like sticks. The 912 is a common engine for the Merlin.  Randy flys a Subaru in his AVID plus.  I don't forsee any issues with a 0-200.   One issue I am looking at is being able to run 87 octane.  The 0-200 needs some modifications to top dead clearance to make that happen.  I also want to change the landing gear.  The original gear looks puny on this Merlin.  I am going to probably fab large gear with an additional connection point on each side of fuselage.

No problem. I'll be taking a look at this myself to see how things will add up on my project.

Need the plate that covers where the pump went. Rotax Rick carries them.  A little piece of tubing will plug up the holes on the intake manifold.

Luke,  I think the first you listed is the Checklist - I didn't go there yet.
OK, I went there, and it looks like the list I have - this is 2011 version - don't know if there is a newer one, but surely this one will work.

I did some searching for the 8000-38 form, but the closest I could come up with is this:

    http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/ultralights/amateur_built/kits/media/AmBuiltFabAssyCklistFW.pdf

I also found this page on the FAA website:

    http://www.faa.gov/forms/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/181636

I'm not sure why it says cancelled in parenthesis.

Also, here is the page that the above form was linked from:

The Merlin has almost double the wing area of the Avids at about 225 sf, about equal to a J3 Cub.  The 912 is one of the engines used in the kits.   The 0-200 may have already been used in them, or maybe in this one.
If he uses the 8A, without starter and generator, it should come in about 180 lbs.

    Removing oil injector
    Hey Guys,
I'm removing the oil injector set up on my 582. What needs to be done to the engine? Thanks, Bryce

I'd say a 225+ pound O200 is going to be a VERY heavy engine for that airplane.

    Wasn't the Merlin designed for a 503 or 582 Rotax (65-75 pounds)?

I wonder about that prop strike - was the engine running?  did it stop the engine?
Disregarding the prop strike (an unknown condition):  As long as all AD's are complied with, and only certified parts and maintenance are applied to the 0-200, it can be kept in the certified group, and sold as such.  You can still do oil changes, replace plugs, etc.  Otherwise, you lose that if you treat it as "experimental", which probably would include not using a certified prop approved for that engine.
That is what I understand - I always accept differing opinions.  Someone said that you could go experimental and later make it certified again as long as you kept an engine log and updated it with all ADs, but I am a little skeptical that would work all the time.

I found this in my letters from Joe Norris at the EAA:  FAA Form 8000-38 Fabrication/Assembly Operation Checklist.

FAA Order 8130.2?= 285 pages, and change 2 is 104 pages.  This has a chapter on experimental aircraft and the suggested new Operating Limitations start at paragraph 134.

You can maintain the O-200, but if you do then it loses it's 'certified' status.  For the Phase I requirements, it is then just like any other experimental engine and will require 40 hours of Phase I testing.

Hey do you guys knows if I am required to maintain a 0-200 in a certified FAA condition if I put it in the merlin, or does it become experimental like the plane at that point.  I found a 0-200 complete with all accessories through my aircraft mechanic friend.  He says the engine had a very light prop strike.

    Thanks

    Luke,
Yes, this is the form for scratch-builts - If you find it on the FAA site, please post the number.  I have a poor copy somewhere in a lot of papers.   I think it is form 8xxx, and starts with longerons and continues thru all the parts you need to build a plane - each part is worth 1 point, or a decimal of a point to you and to the commercial maker if applicable.  For instance, you buy a Grove gear and wheels - Grove gets the whole point for making each of them, but you might get the points for assembly on the next line, and installation on the next.   There are several pages to this - about 19 or 27 if I remember right, and near the end you have to add up each column of points and figure out the percentages in several different ways.  Looks like it might take a few days just to fill out the form and figure out if you did it right?
They don't count making materials, just take credit for each part you make out of tube, angle, and sheet, etc..
Be sure and copy the latest OPLims before you are ready for inspection - no need to do it now, and maybe they will be changed before you finish your bird - that has happened to me several times now.
If you cant find this, I will try to search some more for mine.

    Hey Ed,

I'm planning to go the "built from parts" route too. I guess I need to get my ducks in a row before I get too far on anything. When I started my first homebuilt back in the early nineties (it's the one in my avatar that never got finished), there were no approved kits. Each builder just had to convince the inspector that they built over half of the plane.

If I remember correctly the FAA felt that there were too many planes being built by hired guns, so they came up with a form that you had to fill out showing all the tasks that you completed yourself. If the tasks you did added up to more than 51%, you were okay. Is this the form you are thinking of? I guess I need to start looking into the paperwork I will need to do. I think the idea of "51% approved" kits came about at the same time to make it easier for the majority of home builders.

I don't know if the Merlin Kits were approved for the 51% rule, but that should be on the FAA list somewhere.
The info I have been posting about the two FAA forms, OPLIMS and scratchbuilt, would be good for him to have no matter what he does with these parts.
