AKflyer, Why don't you like the 3 to 1 Cbox?  We just put one on our plane and it seems to work great.  I'm sure you have good reasons, I am just trying to learn as much as possible.

the 582 wont pull the high pitch blades, you have to crank them about as flat as you can get them to get your take off RPM.  I learned this after my brother talked me into getting the high pitch, and I then burned up 3 IFA motors.. The TQ needed to flatten them out was just too much for the lil dewalt motor in the front of the prop.  All that being said, get the standard pitch and the blade blocks too so if the mood strikes you, you can try it out as a 2 blade... I keep the blade blocks in my plane as I have known some doltz who I cant say what his name is, but his initials start with Leonard Perry, who pranged a blade on the edge of the dock.... The blade blocks let me errr, um.. the doltz, remove said pranged blade and quickly convert to the 2 blade not so sexy version and got my, I mean his, dumb ass home.

    Hey High Country;

    I have exact same problem with my plane, same prop, same degrees, and this the second engine I tried and they both show same performance, that gear box does not like GSC;

2 blade wooden prop work very well... I´m happy with the performance I get with 2 different wooden props I tried.

Thanks Leni. this is what I've been leaning towards http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/quickivoprops.phpI'm thinking 68" Ultralight 3 blade. I'm not sure of the standard pitch vs the hi pitch what does this do for me. which is best on our Avids?

And, Kitfox still uses the same .065 wall spars and rib spacing on the 1550 lbs Gross Weight models 5 thru 7 as they used on the Kitfox 1 with 850 lbs Gross Weight. The only thing that changed was adding the spar inserts because they could no longer get the spars with the internal I-beam, and they went from aluminum drag tubes to steel, and went to 1 inch diameter struts, and larger, heavier wall crossover tubes.
I would like to see some engineer come up with the comparisons between that and Avid???

We had a 68" 3 blade on a 582 with the "B" box  and 2.58:1.  It worked VERY well on the MK IV we had it on.  That was just the ground adjust hub and when on just wheels or skis it worked great.

I would not go to the 3:1, I would stick to the 2.58 and a 3 blade 68" ultralight.

    Prop selection Rotax 582 grayhead w B box 2.58:1
So after lots of testing during my phase I flights I'm having problems with my 66" 3 blade GSC prop. when set to 11* the numbers are awesome but after just a short time the performance dies off. Ive checked and blade 1 goes to 12* blade 2 goes to 9* and blade 3 goes to 8* I marked all the blades and have reset them several times. in no time at all they are adjusting very consistently. this seems to be a normal problem for the GSC prop. sooo now what. I don't really want to fly it until the problem is fixed but the budget is pretty well fixed at the moment on broke.  I'm now saving and selling off my left over parts to get a new prop. what should I be looking for. I had a 2 blade ivo on the sky raider and it was awesome so I'm thinking of going that route again possibly with a 3 blade though. I currently have a B box with 2.58 gears. what would be the best prop for this setup and would hopefully still work good when I can upgrade the box later? 2 blade? 3 blade? how long? I've been doing some research and its mostly over my head. I do have an A box w 3.0:1 gears could they be put into the B box if it was better? I'm still just a newbie when it comes to all this ratio vs length vs number of blades etc. etc.

    Thanks Robert

I believe the gross weight on an A model Avid was 756. Odd number, but that's what I remember. A friend of mine has one. B model was listed as being 911 lbs, another odd number. I think the spars are the same as later models on the A, but the internal stiffeners are different, or not there at all. Just to clarify, the Heavy Hauler wings used .083 wall thickness tubes for spars, the regular wing used a .065 wall thickness. Jim Chuk

I believe they will physically fit, but their internal structure is different. Your gross weight will drop to that of the A model. (850 pounds?)

Wow! This is a great forum. Thanks to all of you who are sharing your experiences, especially the 582 Rotax grey head engine since that's what I have in a 1993 Avid Mark IV that I'm getting restored at Rocky Mountain Wings, LLC. It's been a 5-year project, but I know it will be worth it.

All of your input is good prep for me.

It is but the fuselage has rust issues,
    No windshield.
Engine has not been started in 3 years.
I would be buying it for a core engine and probably selling the rest as parts.
Seller doesn't have current N number.
He will sell the plane at that price, just not sure I'm ready to let go of the money.

If they are amphibs, and they look like the are, a new set is more than that airplane is listed for.  Here is the link to the Lotus pricing page:  http://www.full-lotus.com/prices---floats-sets.html

The A model Avid had a welded in place motor mount. That may have been redone when they put the 582 in??? Jim Chuk

I'm thinking about buying a A model Avid.
It supposed to have a Mark-4 upgrade firewall forward 582 engine kit.
Engine will have to be rebuilt.
Just want to know if it will bolt onto a Mark-4 with out any modifications.

Also what is a set of full Lotus floats for an Avid worth.

    Thx marv

additional to all this, I know somebody had an annoying sound on the radio and after tons of investments on filters and all sorts of things, he couldn´t get rid of a cracking sound on the radio, he later find out by accident that one loose ground contact somewhere was vibrating against a metal plate and creating the noise, it was worst at high RPM and start or stop ramdomly.

spend money and even worst "LOT OF TIME" and all what he need it to do is just tight a screw......

  24. akflyer added a post in a topic FAA considering ALLOWING 2nd PILOT for PHASE 1 TESTS

The way it reads now is that only necessary crew be allowed in the aircraft during phase one... in the interest of safety, how  am I spose to have my eyes outside the cockpit watching for traffic etc all the while taking detailed notes of various speeds etc... If it was ever questioned I would make the case that the second pilot (or engineer) was along to record data while I performed the sole duty of flying the aircraft and keep myself and the other planes in the area safe from mid air collisions.  I would LOVE for them to try and fault me and tell me that in the interest of safety I could not deem the second crew member as a necessary flight member.... As the Pilot in command it is up to me to determine required flight crew not some bozo on the ground... much like the tower telling you to do something that you cant comply with.. we have the right and the responsibility to tell the tower to politely piss off while we are trying to manage what ever emergency or flight condition we are dealing with at the time.

That being said, it is nice to know that they are trying to officially change it to make it more clear, however, since it is a government agency, I am not holding my breath that the waters will not be any less muddy.

FAA considering ALLOWING 2nd PILOT for PHASE 1 TESTS
Article in this months Kitplanes mag concerning the possible rule that a 2nd QUALIFIED PILOT may be allowed to fly in EAB Phase 1 testing for safety reasons - Applies ONLY to KIT-BUILT planes and not to scratch-built.
Another article shows inside of Rotax Factory and some 912 engine details.
    EDMO
UPON re-reading the article, I found a small note that AC90-116, allowing a 2nd pilot, had been approved and released 23 Sep 2014, and that the necessary OPLims modification  paperwork is still in review, but expected soon.
