    Hey Everyone,
    A Kitfox just came up for sale that I'm interested in but the owner is going to de-certify it before selling.
    Any chance of getting it re-certified after purchase?

    Thanks for the replies. Do you think a 1/4" id fuel line and more than the required 310cc of oil would still do the trick?

    Jim, I do have an inverted engine, and I fill bottom up, and the bleeder open. I turn it over a bunch, then open the bleeder again, and top up the oil.

    My primary desire is to get rid of the big honkn hose and also relocate the bottle to the firewall or at least further aft, and higher.

    What ever you do, you want to make sure you don't end up with air trapped in the rotary valve area. That is less likely to happen in an engine that is mounted plugs up, but can happen in an inverted engine fairly easy. I always filled the valve area by pouring oil down the hose that connects lower on the engine. Eventually oil starts coming out the top connection, and it pushes out the air ahead of it. Jim Chuk

    The tank also acts as a heat sinc, the flow is by convection.

            I know that some had problems with the undercamber glue not holding - some of that may be improper procedures or too much shrinkage - I don't think that the Riblett or Speedwing ribs are as critical as the undercambered.

    Take heart...I have been at a kit that was supposed to be ready to assemble. Got taken and now have 2 airplanes....one for scrap{the original} and one that is going to be safe and airworthy. Helps me sleep a little better. Over the "I hate this" thing and want to see it finished now.

    The main reason I recovered my wings was because the fabric has come detached from the under cambered wing bottom in multiple places. They are stitched now. I've heard rumors that some of the early model VNEs were driven by no stitching but not positive on that. I would do it again and like was mentioned it's a selling point if you ever decide to part with it.

    582 Rotary Valve Lubrication
    My understanding is that the rotary valve is basically sitting in a "bath" of oil. It does not circulate through the lines into the tank. The tank is there to replace by gravity flow, any oil that may go leak out of the rotary valve area. Acceptable limit 1cc/hr. If this is so, then the tank size, and hose diameter is not too important, other than 310cc has to go into the engine/tank, and the line has to be a diameter that would allow at least 1cc/hr to go down it.

    This is my understanding, but am actually asking if this is correct or not.

    The lines on my set up are monstrous, and has a huge bend radius, taking up way too much room. Older sleds had a small bottle tank with 1/4" lines, (fuel line type). I would like todo this, or use 5/16 line to clean things up considerably.

    Thanks for your input. A guiding source would be great too!, as I have not been able to find any.

    I believe I read where stainless steel staples were the recommended procedure for the Avid Magnum. I did rib stitch wings on a Kitfox 4. It was kind of fun and I'm glad I did it. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Just about like the covering process. Lot of worry before, but follow the book, and afterwards you say: "that wasn't near as bad as I thought it was going to be." Jim Chuk

    If you do a good glue job on the ribs, I think stitching is not needed, but is an option.
    I read about the staples in one of my manuals - I think you might do more damage to your ribcaps if you have to remove the staples for a repair or recovering - I wouldn't use them - but still an option.

    necessary--- no however some would consider that it is in which case you might think about resale later. FWIW I stitched the wings and tail section of my avid it was pretty easy and not much cost or weight was added. It did take me about a day for each wing and a day for the tail. needles can be made very easily from wire coat hangers and you can bend them however you want to make it easier. regardless of the covering system you choose to use (I used stewarts) I would highly recommend reading the whole poly fiber manual http://www.polyfiber.com/products/proceduremanualno1.htmI read it twice long before I ever started covering. Its well written so not to bore you and has lots of very helpful information that can be related to any covering system you use, including the rib stitching process. also lots of great videos on youtube and the eaa website. keep asking questions the guys here were very helpful for us to complete our build.

    Neither of my Kitfox IVs were stitched.

    I am planning to stitch the wings and tail of my project plane. For no other real reason than I want to.

    I wonder if it would help to keep the tank from flexing and breaking if one was to wrap fiberglass around the edges of the tanks. That would support the edges of the tank I would think. Any opinions on that? Jim Chuk

    I had some visitors today. Tom in his Zenieth 601, Linda in her Cessna 150, Bill in his Kolb, and I flew the Avid in for a short visit, Had to put it back at it's hangar at Lazy B because my hangar interior is being renovated. It was a perfect day for flying today, put .6 on the Avid, better than nothing.

    From having limited experience painting fabric planes, My opinion is that the tight weave of the lightweight 1.7 fabric takes a lot less paint for a good finish than the 2.7 medium fabric. $$$ saved on fabric and paint costs...and weight-saving too.

    FWIW- I used lightweight on all but the bottom of fuselage/ sides around the door openings and bottom of rudder/elevator, may have done the ruder in medium as well can't remember. I don't see a real need to use medium on the whole plane and as Ed mentioned shrinking the medium fabric on these light airframes can easily damage it so if you decide to go this route be careful and don't shrink it too much.
