Tailwheels came along before concrete was invented for airstrips and cow pastures - They can be a PIA on pavement! The original Wright Flyer was a nose-dragger, well - a nose-skidder!

How about a photo of your sled.  I'd like to know what you guys ride up there and what kind of riding you do.

My landing gear book says top of pivot about 5 degrees forward with a load on it - leaning backward is dynamically unstable, to use other words for what Leni said.   Tailwheels can be downright fussy, and sometimes more tweaking is needed to stop shimmy.

I'm visiting family and friends down in SC, so it would just be a guess on my part as well. Fabric is 70" wide. I would do some measuring on the fuse and tail feathers and go from there. I've never worried about having some extra fabric around. About the time I think I'll never recover another plane, something happens, and here we go again. I buy the uncertified stuff from Aircraft Spruce. Way cheaper, and I think, just as good. Jim Chuk

Leaning it forward (the top of the king pin in relation to the bottom) will also cause it to steer straight on the ground as it will have to "lift" the tail to turn the wheel.  I always start the summer out with mine angles slightly back, then after a few gravel bar landings it seems to be angled forward.  It sucks, but I get tired of pulling the tail springs off to re-arch them.  Maybe next time I will have a spring shop do it and re-temper them so hopefully they will hold shape a bit longer.

If you bought a snow maker I would pay for ya to go put some on the trails around my cabin so I can ride my darn snogo.. pathetic that I have not put a single mile on my sled yet his year and I normally get in 2-3000 miles a year on

With the weight on it, the kingpin of the tailwheel should be perpendicular to the ground.

Leaning the kingpin forward will cause shimmy, leaning it back will cause it to be unstable making straight travel difficult.

  13. dav8or added a post in a topic Pictures of MK IV radiator mounting?

That is great and answers how the cabin heat attachment is supposed to mount as well. I will have to modify this a bit but it gives me a great starting point. It would be interesting to see your setup as well. My Avid has the throttle set up mounted using the front 2 engine mounts where the MKiv radiator mounting plate is in this picture. It would be good to know the hose routings as well.

    Thanks!

    Lenny,

Remind me as it gets closer.  I'm only a couple of hours away from Atlanta in my Cherokee.  I could use a refresher on my Class B flying.

    Anyone near Atlanta,GA
Looks like I will be making a trip to Atlanta for work on 5-16 for a few days.  If anyone is in the area and wants to get together for an adult beverage and swap some lies I would dig it.

I think I will be in town from the evening of the 16th to the 22nd.

The pictures kind of suck, but here is the section that shows the mounting on the MK IV  I will look and see if I have any pics of mine when I did it.

Pictures of MK IV radiator mounting?
    Hi,

Does anyone have pictures of the MK IV radiator mounting. I am going to try mounting twin radiators in a MK IV cowling and it would be great if I could see how it was originally done on the MK IV before I start designing my own mounts and radiators. I have one MK IV radiator I believe but I am not 100% sure about how it was mounted. I am modifying my Model C which originally had a side radiator.

    Thanks,
    Dan

It's 36 degrees today and we are half way through what should be on of the coldest months... doubt we are going to have to worry about frozen pipes this year

No drag that I noticed. It's in a pretty dirty area so I doubt there is much. Still playing with props to get the output right. I cut a 14x5 down to 8.5x5 but didn't have time to try the new prop for the generator.

The SkyRaider that was flying at Oshkosh every day was silver and had a 503 with no cowling. It has been for sale on Barnstormers.
