Leni, I have done some research on using LED back-up bulbs - they don't flash, but are a whole lot cheaper, and cut down on the current required for the limited 2-cycle electric - I believe that if you put some bright aluminum, stainless, or foil to the rear of them in the housing, you will increase the light output - like the mirrored inside of the old Grimes bulbs. Not necessary, but might improve light output.

    Chris,
I agree on the heat from the sun down here - That's why I recommend a light tinted TD, and a dark tinted Skylight. I put the dark bronze sunroof and light bronze tinted windows on my Ercoupe, and it made a world of difference.
Of course, the low wings did not shade the windows like the AvidFoxes.

My MKIV had an aluminium TD with a small window in each half. While it looked nice, the windows did little but let light into the baggage compartment.

My Magnum had a lexan TD. it looked awesome, but really did nothing to help visibility and definitely contributed to the sweat box effect of the plane when flying in the sun. i found that I needed to put shades overhead and do everything I could to not be fried in the sun with all that glass.

lexan is also much heavier than aluminium. If it were me I would go solid (but thin) AL TD and get sun shades for directly overhead that you can put up when flying in the sun.

The most beneficial thing I did to both the MKIV and Magnum was to replace the aluminium door bottoms with lexan. What a huge difference in visability during flight and landing. Just a HUGE improvement and a real pleasure compared to the metal bottom doors. Adding door bottom glass does not really tend to add heat to the cockpit on sunny days either.

My 2 cents, but I do have 1700 hours flying around in these things, a lot of it in the sun.

5 minute swap and you have straight nav lights or 3 burst strobes.  Im happy with them so far especially for the price.

First time I looked at this threat and I like how you did it by keeping all your pictures in one section think I will start that under the kitfox 1 section since that section is dead. also I like the stringer you added to the top of your bird, we'll call that the fast back mod.

Leni do you have a part# for these bulbs? sounds like my easiest option as I'm already set up with grimes lights

I have lost some hair wondering if the Warp Drive pusher left-hand rotation blades could be set in the hub backwards and used in the tractor right-hand rotation position. Wondering if IVO could work that way too?

  9. EDMO added a post in a topic Avid Heavy Hauler 1200 lb GW?

From what I understand, the Bandit had the .083 spars, and 503 engine. It was designed to have a light empty weight. If you load it with the same amount as most of our birds, the GW may be about 200 to 300 lbs less than our heavier birds.
As a point in comparison, the Kitfox 4 with the 503 engine, .065 spars, and 1" struts, was listed as 1050 GW, but with the 582 engine it was 1150 or 1200 - so the difference in GW was only in the engine.
The 7/8" spars were tested and spar bolt/rod end failed at about 15,000 lbs - so no problem there - see my post in "Files and Forms".
The Avid Magnum, 1700 GW uses the same 1/4" spar strut bolt.
I have heard "rumors" that Dean flew the original .065 Avid wings at 1500 GW, but imagine that it was smooth air, and a good pilot - I repeat, this has been "rumored".
I think that the original Kitfox .065 spars with the full-length extruded "I" beam in them are probably stronger than any of the ones with short inserts, but I have never seen any engineering numbers to compare them.
I guess your GW is only as big as your Cahunas!

My 1992 MKIV HH's gross weight rating was 1150. I don't know of any published specs that exceeded 1150 for any of the "original" Avid kits.

I don't consider Fat Avids or any of the newer modified versions that sold in tiny ammounts as the company was rapidly changing hands "original" Avids.

I too would like the detailed response to this one.  It's been cussed and discussed here.  Seems the HH weights were all over the place.  At the end of the day, its what ever you want to put in the plane.  There is not a "gross weight" listed on any of my FAA paperwork nor any others that I have seen.  Just what you decide to put on the W&B sheet.

Don't think you can use the same prop on a pusher that was used on a tractor application.  Not unless you are using an engine that turns opposite direction.....  Jim Chuk

Avid Heavy Hauler 1200 lb GW?
I am looking at an amateur built Avid Bandit built in '95 that had "every update to make it a heavy hauler" added during build, like 7/8" struts and HH spars. Would that allow it to have a 1200 lb MGW, which is what it is stated as having?  Thanks!

That would be very much appreciated!

Hi EDMO ive considered going full lexan but decided that will add extra time and money and I really want to fly. Perhaps I will do that as a mod once flying.

    Thanks for all the responses,

I don't know much about the different Avid models, but from what I have read, you might be a lot happier with the full Lexan or at least the solid Lexan top - I've heard lots of comments about the ones with hinges leaking.

I can take photos of mine this weekend but I am not sure if that will help. My hangar mate also has a C model and his stiffeners are located differently than mine. Mine may have been altered by the original builder to install large windows in the turtle deck.

I actually want to replace my turtle deck with a single piece tinted lexan part like I have seen others do.

If Leni could get his 800 going, it should have a float takeoff like JATO!

I will post a photo when I can get to them - they are in a box in my shed - right now we have 3 inches of icy snow and more is predicted tonight, with next three days of freezing rain, sleet, snow - temps around 8F and wind chill below zero.
This aint Alaska! I left my Sorrels and my grippers up there.
