There are more of us (Modern engineering nosedragggers) on here, but they haven't "come out of the closet" yet, because of the "Ancient order of taildraggers" might rib them, especially when we are able to carry a kayak under the belly!
One soul has a photo of a P-38 nosedragger as his Avatar..
.Maybe I should use my Ercoupe which was designed in 1938, instead of the Cessna 150..

  5. dholly added a post in a topic DROOP TIP VS SPEEDSTER HOERNER TIPS

Randy - Why not use Finch tips? According to Steve Winder, it was the only tip that showed more than negligible benefit in testing at our speeds, although only at top end with no real low speed or stall benefits. Along with your 1/2" twist, might really help you cruise. An easy install... Magnum wing chord and installation with standoffs the same as Mk-IV. If you don't mind fixed tips, this would be one the easiest of all Avid/KF tips to do and, hey, if you get pissed at the 'eye pokers' as Ed calls them, it would be a pretty quick job to remove them and replace the short piece of trailing edge material with straight and only minimal fabric patch/paint work.

[edit] P.S. - I can go measure but, IIRC, the KF Hoerner tips I have for my A+ added ~3"-4" per side over the stock Mk-IV fixed tips.

Don't you lose your man card if you put a training wheel on a KF or Avid?

Polycarbonate (Lexan) will absorb a little water over time wich will boil and make bubbles when you get it hot enough to bend. The solution is to pre-bake the polycarbonate for a while at 180 F or so or to use fresh stuff.

Randy, your killing me! I got back from the slope tuesday. I got a set of 850's on the Cleveland wheels this morning. I have to make a run to atown in about 10 minutes to go meet with the company lawyer then I'm headed back to get the wheels put on and move the plane off the lake. Flying in tuesday I saw a vast majority of the lakes on the peninsula had open water on them so it's time for wheels. One of these days I will get a set of the 26" bush wheels, probly sometime after I recover from alimony and child support

I'm hoping to have the plane ready to go tomorrow so weather permitting, I'm gonna be ready to go play this weekend!

I can only give you crap Larry cause I would love to have one in the nose of my plane. Unlike ed ' s nose wheel..

Yep, I pretty much figured all that out about a week after joining the forum. (I'm still sharp like that) At least it gives the thread a bump to keep it from dying.

Yes bill is trying to offer a better mousetrap... like we seem to have to find better things like wheels and brakes. Kinda like the Cleveland 6 bolt wheels and double puck brakes I got yesterday, I didn't have to have them, but for 500 bucks I guess it was worth fighting with the wife for 2 hours in the counselors office about yesterday. For some reason she thinks the shoe boxes in her closet are not the same thing as old tires stacked up in the shed

Kffan, you gotta remember we have a lot of the older crowd in here with the attention span of my wife... or maybe my 19 month old daughter we are easily amused and we never, ever, EVER pass up an opportunity to flip Ed some shit about his training wheel.. I think it's on page 2 of the guy code

Yes. There are a couple of tail dragger conversion STCs, I believe. Bill is attempting to offer a better mouse trap.

    Float recall 912
If anyone has an engine built since 2012 or if you have replaced your floats the new floats are defective. They absorb fuel and then cause the engine to run rich/rough on the low end. On mine one bank was worse than the other causing the engine to run very rough and shake at idle but this happened over time. You can order new replacement floats (currently back ordered ) and return the defective ones for credit.

cruise at 150 to 200 knots and stall at 35 knots? sounds almost to good to be true.

I have some friends here in Sweden that are building a new aircraft and as far as I heard; wing tips are only a tangible advantage; when you are flying more than 200kt or 10000ft and above; somewhere there can´t recall the exact numbers, basically top end airplanes and airliners are really making use of these advantage. Rest is just cosmetic.

Their original design didn´t have wing tips because it wasn´t necessary, but they got hold of a Rotax turbo engine 150Hp and the airplane performs just within that range, now the plane is suited with wing tips.

Thanks for the discussion.  I like the look of the stock Avid tips so at this point plan to use them on my new wings.  The Avid tips are better than 12" addition to the length of the wing each side.  I plan to use 1/2" washout like the later KF and Magnums.  Wondering if the added length of the Avid tip vs a short Hoerner or flat end makes any difference with the lessened washout???

This is not a great picture but what is that on the end?  I figured there must already be an STC to convert a 172 to a TD.

    Hey Leni,

I'm bummed we didn't get together the last turn around; let me know the next oneThe weather is geting kind of crazy warm now.  Not sure when you get back home again but have someone keep an eye on the lake if it is very long.  I landed on some of the lakes around Big Lake and the snow was still hard so wheels were fine.  I heard that Fish Lakes was even OK for wheels last weekend.

Are you planning to put the 30's on the new wheels?  Jack picked up a set of the new model AK Bushwheel Airstreaks in 26" so I had a chance to fly it with the 26" Goodyears and the 26" Airstreaks.  Even on the gravel and grass, the Airstreaks are a lot smoother.
