"Dads" brand paint stripper is what you want. Apply with the supplied little spray bottle. Stays in place. Scrape and wire brush of the old paint. Re apply if you didn't get everything. Doesn't stink too much but wear gloves and safety glasses. In Canada it's around $50 a gallon. You probably need a quart.

Hey Jim we were probably about 1500agl there on the way home we had to be at 3000agl, that's the joys of flying at 12 noon ha, and about the kitfox your right no progress, that's more of a winter thing for me this time of year I really don't enjoy sitting in a garage working, and god knows I cant open the garage doors this time of year with all the folks walking around in the evening, everybody wants to stop and see how its going, Can't get a thing done when that happens ha, later this summer early fall I will probably get started on it again,

Good to hear you've saved another of our birds from oblivion.  Good Job!

Keep the Hacman system in mind if managing the EGT's ends up giving you the blues.  It's great just dialing in the EGT you want and not worrying about rejetting for changing conditions.

    Mark,
The Avids use tubes, but you could also consider something like Larry put in his Kitfox 4 - a tapered rectangular aluminum  tank that fits behind the seats - Maybe one that fits all the way across seats - Look at his photos in Kitfox IV, or go to Kitfox catalog to see the plastic one I have - I could take a photo, but it is not in my plane yet.

Chris, the blue PPG tank I posted above will fit right in a seat - quick disconnect to fuel lines would make it practical too.   My 4 wing tanks are more than my old bladder can handle - Maybe when I was younger?

My MKIV had one wing tank too. When I was doing longer trips solo where fuel was going to be a problem, I seat belted 6 gallons into the seat next to me. Worked great.

I think the dimensions of the 5gal plastic tank are outside of what I need.  I have to keep the simplicity of the folding wing feature intact because I intend to keep the plane at home in a pole structure and trailer to the field when I have the opportunity to fly.  I had a friend who weld aluminum come and help me measure the available space and we think we can remove the original 2.5 "diameter X 20"long header tank and fit in a 7" dia X 24" long tank.  That will give me an additional 4 gal.  I could get 5 gallons by going with a 30" long tube.  It should mount in the same location and the aileron connecting rod will clear it when I fold the wings.

I have to source material and see how much this is going to cost and if it is really worth it.

    It Flies After 9 years
Saturday, 13 June I flew N577MD after it sat in a guys garage for 9 years.  I was only one time around the pattern because I need to re-jet the carbs to keep EGT below 1200 and re-pitch the prop to get a bit more RPM on climb out but it was uneventful.   The flap handle was too loose and the flaps kept creeping toward negative giving me a bit of nose up and I had to keep down pressure on the stick, but it was manageable.

It is amazing that an airplane can sit for 9 years unused and the engine not run, (or stored properly for that matter) and then be made flyable with minimal effort.  I  will be cautious with the engine for a few hours just to make sure that it does not have any defect not yet realized.  I'll get more time on after the jets I have ordered get in and I have them installed.  I have a huge prop, 72", and I took out a whole degree of pitch to try to get the RPM to come up into the power range.

I'm really looking forward to getting some dirt on the tires.

Witness (s?) reported seeing plane break apart  before falling - wing was 1/4 mile from wreck near Cuba airport.
He may have been trying for the airport there, about 2/3 of the way to St.Louis from Branson, Mo.
We have had scattered storms for past 3 days, large hail, one tornado, and expecting strong storms and monsoon rain rest of this week.  Duck and Cover, TJay!

  21. MarkD added a post in a topic Gear Alignment (allowable Toe Out)?

My experience with Toe Out on a RANs S6s, with tri cycle gear  with Matco brakes was not good.  The toe out condition caused the brake to not seat in properly and chatter.  The chatter got progressively worse until it caused the fatigue of the fasteners that held the piston side of the brake to the static side and the brake assembly failed on the runway.  Fortunately, it did not cause a wheel lock up and I was able to recover the parts that shed off.  I talked to George at Matco and discussed the situation thinking I had a faulty brake assembly but he was fairly adamant that the wheel alignment was the cause.  After jacking the airplane up and removing both main wheels I found the right wheel/axle had a slight toe out condition.  I applied shims to the right axle to get a neutral alignment, replaced the disc and caliper, reinstalled the wheel and re-performed the break in procedure.  The brake seated in and no more chatter.

Conclusion:  Neutral alignment at a minimum,  Slight toe in if applying the brakes will flex the gear so the wheel will be neutral under heavy braking.  The RANs had a steel gear leg that would flex a considerable amount.  The tire will scuff if the toe out is more than a few degrees.

If the original black paint has good adheshion, use a wax and grease removerand clean it, then scuff it real good with a red Scotchbrite pad,. Blow it off and reclean it with the wax and grease remover again. Tape up anything that you don't want paint on and spray it with Bulldog adhesion promoter as per instructions. It is then ready to be painted any color you like.
