Posted 23 Nov 2017 I want to install HKS 700E into my Kitfox IV. Its a 1999 Skystar Classic IV with a 503 and 154hr total time. I have most everything I need except the engine mount and Green skys is reluctant to build just a mount......He has not said no and I would pay extra if he will do it... I could make a mount but for me it would be trial and error and I dont want to get into that...., HKS engine, then I guess Ill look at buying a factory new 582 and go that route... I can run a 2 stroke. I just like the HKS, it starts so easy, idles nice, I know it is not as powerful as a 582 or bigger but I just want to fly around, no bush flying, done all I need for 5 life times in Alaska. Anyone has any idea how I buy an HKS engine mount?????new, used, off a wreck maybe??????willingto pay top dollar$$$$Mark smith 907-378-9632
Posted 23 Nov 2017 On my GUll 2000 the HKS bolts to aluminum plates that bolt to the same holes the 503 used to bolt to. Here you can see the thick aluminum plates the HKS bolts to and then tthethepla
Posted 23 Nov 2017 Looks like a pretty simple install I bet you can figure something out
Posted 23 Nov 2017 Maybe try Kitfox as well. I talked to Tom at Green Sky last spring about an HKS mount for the Kitfox 1, and I didn't get the impression that he wouldn't make one. I had an HKS used engine in mind at the time. I know they had an HKS mounted on a Kitfox 2 at one point, maybe still do. JImChuk
Posted 23 Nov 2017 I would make you one if you were closer. Without an engine to mock up though I would not be to excited to try and fab something that may not be quite right.
Posted 23 Nov 2017 Make something simple to mark where your prop flange should be, remove your 503 and set the HKS on the mount and see where you need to be from there. Maybe some spacers or a new plate is all you need? EDMO
Posted 23 Nov 2017 (edited) I would say a couple pieces of aluminum channel Iron on the 503 mount or a few spacers and just use. what you got Edited 23 Nov 2017 by TJay
Posted 23 Nov 2017 yeah my hks mounts like a buddys 503 in a avid .my avid with hks has a green sky mount.but the motor was bought from them also at the same time.Kinda surprised they wont help you out!!!!!
Posted 25 Nov 2017 Build it! From your posts Mark it is clear that you have the background to get it right!I was intimidated by the idea of building a mount for my yamaha, but with some help, am glad I tackled it. Learned alot, had fun doing it, and found it wasn't so bad to take on.It is just so hard to shop out a one off custom job without bringing the plane and engine to the fabricator. 1 person likes this
Posted 22 August Hello Zadwit,Sorry I understand this topic is from 2017, but I have just purchased a HKS700E, and I am also looking to mount it on my Kitfox III cell.Did your project went thru?Would you have pictures of the assembly progress? I am interested to see how you went thru and would love to learn from your experience. Thank you, Cedric IMG_9646.HEIC
Posted 22 August I don't know if Zadwit monitors this forum any longer. I do know that I bought the HKS engine from him quite a few yrs ago. I ended up selling it along with a nearly finished Kitfox 3 to a Dr in Wisconsin. He didn't use this engine, but ended up going with the tubocharged HKS engine. Had lots of cooling issues and eventually went with a 912 Rotax. Another guy I knew had a HKS in a Kitfox 3 in southern MN. Performance was ok, it seems, somewhere between a 503 and 582, and probably closer to the 503. I'm currently flying behind a 80 HP 912 in my KItfox 4 and would recomend that setup any day over the HKS. There was another guy who put an HKS in a C model Avid, named Mike Rickets I believe. He did some youtube videos of it flying. Light on fuel burn, but not stellar performance. Take care, JImChuk
Posted 28 August Hello Jim, Thanks for your feedback. I agree that 80Hp is what my Kit would deserve, but this HKS engine is also a nice piece of engineering and I an willing to give it a try. To be honest, I cannot afford Rotax. Therefore, I was getting ready to use a BMW1150 engine.2001-2006 BMW R 1150 engine delivers 85-95hp. They feature cylinders head oil cooling and dual spark. Now, adapting a motorcycle engine is a lot of work if you are not willing to pay someone to do it for you. - Reductor, injection management, ignition...So, I believe the HKS is a good first step, even if it might be limited to use in duo during the summer. And I might work on a BMW solution in parallel, although I know it will take more time to make it work. Thanks again for your honest and experienced feedback. 1 person likes this
