You have to consider not only air loads, but also the possibility of a bird strike.  I would think .090 lexan would be minimum thickness for a windshield.

I quit using Google as a search  engine years ago after trying it because of all the ads they would insert in whatever I was trying to read online.  It's probably worse now.

Maybe heat the fuselage's left hand pin tube support and twist the pin tube so it lines up.  Then weld in a bracket like they do in Europe to reinforce the rear spar attachment.

I have an "A" model Avid, serial number 90.  It doesn't have the nose gear mount installed.

It doesn't sound right to me.  The mod is supposed to lessen adverse yaw by giving more up aileron than down.

What an improvement!  The site and posts actually come up quickly on my old desktop computer.  It used to time out before showing a post.

It just kind of reminds me of the ceramic-coated mufflers some of the Ramblers used to have   Technology has come a long way.

The issue you are having with the mount is that on the A model airplanes the tubes on the top of the firewall meet forward of the firewall at the front of the engine mount and on later models the tubes from the wing carry-through meets at the top of the structure above the tank and from there out to the mount points.

  11. Avid90 added a post in a topic BIG NEWS: Avid is BACK IN BUSINESS!

I wish Mark the best of luck in the enterprise.  There is a huge leap going from employee to a business owner.  I don't see a one-man part-time show putting an airplane into production.  It takes a group of employees with a variety of talents, and particularly in the airplane business, attention to detail.  I was suprised to see on the web site that the Avids were made of 4140 steel tubing and 6160 aluminum.  Hmmm... it just doesn't sound right to me.  And, yes, no matter how busy you are, you have to answer the calls and e-mails, even if you have to set aside one afternoon per week to do it.

Stephen, PM me your address.  I'll send you a tracing of the Avid aluminum tank I have (6 gallon).

  15. Avid90 added a post in a topic What difference does pitch make?

Just picture less propeller pitch the same way as you do a lower gear in  car's transmission.  Less pitch will give you faster acceleration off the line than a higher pitch, but you run out of high end as the engine reaches its maximum speed.  Ideally, propeller pitch would vary with the load (lower pitch for takeoff and climb, higher pitch for cruise).  Aeromatic props did this automatically with air load and centrifugal force.  Some airplanes of years ago used a two-position prop (the Sensenich Skyblade on a Stinson comes to mind).

Damp sawdust will self-combust, too.  We had a dumpster full of it light off and burn the paint off the  dumpster over a rainy weekend when I worked at the aircraft supply house years ago.

  17. Avid90 added a post in a topic Bad Landing, Failed Landing Gear, Missed Inspection?

Some good observations by Mark Smith and Ed on the welding on these Avid Flyers.  As I dug into the A model Avid of mine, I couldn't help but to be unimpressed by what was considered acceptable welding on these planes.  To me, it looks kind of gloppy in some areas and almost as if it were done to cover up some sloppily fitted tubes.  But it does seem to hold together for the most part.  One of the problems with the electric welding is that it leaves a rather abrupt transition zone between where the heat was applied and where the tubing is still cool while welding.  It is in this zone, about a half-inch or so from the weld  where a tube is likely to break if highly stressed (as Ed pointed out).  The "old-fashioned" way was to gas weld an accurately-fitted joint.  Here is one of the best examples of gas welding on an aircraft that I have come across.  It is a section of wing strut from a Howard DGA airplane.  The heat pattern inside the strut follows exactly the weld lines on the outside of the strut.
It also surprises me that the fuselage tubing in the area of the landing gear remained 1/2 inch by .035.  A little larger tubing in certain areas could probably made gluing plywood in the spaces or otherwise reinforcing the area with sheet metal to prevent structure distortion unnecessary.  'Just my thoughts...

  18. Avid90 added a post in a topic Avid Nose Wheel Steering Push Pull Tube

    Hi Steve,
This thread is four threads down from yours:  exhaust "Y" too long??? also rudder pedal reinforcements?
A few owners have experienced cracking in the rudder pedal assembly.  I would think a wrap of 4130 down the rudder pedal tube, around the torque tube and back up the other side would be an alternative reinforcement, as he did with the tube that the rudder cable is attached to.

  19. Avid90 added a post in a topic Avid Nose Wheel Steering Push Pull Tube

A couple of things strike me when looking at the pictures, one of which is that I can't believe the geometry of that push pull rod.  It seems to me that the ball end might have run out of swivel travel at the nose gear attachment end and that may have caused the tube to bow, breaking the threads of the An 490 threaded tube end.  I am suprised that the threads are 3/16 inch.  I would have thought them to be 1/4.
I cringe when I see flight control system parts that are chrome plated.  I know they look nice, but hopefully whoever did the chrome plating baked the parts to prevent hydrogen embrittlement.  Does the rudder pedal reinforcement addition apply to the nose wheel airplanes, too?

I remember the BD-4 having a single spar wing and the wing "ribs" were actually fiberglass wing panels about 2 feet wide that would slide onto the spar and overlap each succeeding wing panel.  Bede used honeycomb aluminum panels in the fuselage of the airplane that became the "Grumman Yankee"

    Avid forerunner?
I took these pictures at the Blakesburg airshow (2014, I believe).  I can't help but think that Dean Wilson was impressed at some point by the Fairchild 71.
