Dont know how anyone could go back to ATV's after flying an AVID.  One thing that did happen that I hope others can learn from is that I was pulling up after a take off and lost lift in one wing.  Airspeed was way above stall.  I then realized that Randy was close enough in front of me that I was getting wash off of his plane.   Moment of spookyness.

    Tail wheel shimmy on Pavement
Got my first experience landing on pavement last night.  Felt like the tail wheel was going to come off.  Instructor said shimmy was normal on landing for a tail dragger.  What are you thoughts to get rid of shimmy.

    Thanks

Dual Solo means I kicked him out half way through the trip.  Kidding that was a typo on my part.

    Weird ideling problem
I have a problem with my engine that maybe you can help me solve.  When I start up my engine cold it idles at 2000 rpm.  Sometimes, not all the time, the idle kicks up to 2600 after flying around and then landing.  It will do that for a while and then suddenly drop back to 2000 rpm.  I noticed on my talkeetna trip that the front cylinder was running 50 to 60 hotter than the rear.

What are your suggestions to track this down.  It is hard to figure out because it is random.  Some ideas I have are a cable not letting the carb slide all the way down.  Cable on the adjustable mixture sticking and not letting the slide all the way down.  Sucking air on one cylinder (seems like this would be constant and not just every now and then if that were the problem).

    Water Temperature
I was doing a dual solo to talkeetna today.  My water temp at 2500 ft agl was running at 120.  Is that normal?

    Thanks

    Hey Leni,

If you look in technical tasks where I posted the float instructions some of those measurements will be there.

    AVID Flyer Floats
Just finished floats.  Have not weighed them yet but they are probably around 150 lbs.  Sorry the picture is sideways.  Dont know how to fix that.  These are the original gel-coat floats from avid.

    Thanks Randy,

I am going to post a video of my second solo.   Should be headed to my check ride in two weeks.  Could not pick a better place to learn to fly.  Alaska truly is an act of Gods power and mercy.  Randy has been incredibly kind in flying off phase 1 for me and giving me instruction prior to flying with my CFI.

  16. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic C Drive Rear Seal Replace

Seal # 13 slides over the smooth short shaft on item 4.  Item 4 is what the rubber doughnut mounts to.  The c drive is not sealed until it is reinstalled on the engine and item 4 slides into the seal.  The seal pulls out and installs easily from the back side of the case once the case is removed from the engine.

That seal came out very easy and went in fairly easy.  No need to remove the gear at all.

My seal (item 13 on the diagram) is the rear one where the gear box slides onto the crankshaft.  The problem is the gear box is 20 years old with sixteen hours on it.  The seal probably dryed out.  I am just trying to figure out how the gear and bearing remove to get to the seal to replace.  If you look at the seal from inside the case it looks like it could be pulled from the rear without touching the gear.

    What are your thoughts

The seal I am referring to is the one the crank shaft slides into as opposed to the shaft the prop is on.  It is item 13 and part # 950-084 on the lockwood diagram.

    Thanks

    C Drive Rear Seal Replace
My engine is inverted and the rear seal on the C drive just in front of the rubber donut is leaking.  Can this seal be pulled out the back and replaced or do I need to remove the gear and bearing with a press and then replace the rear seal.  Just hoping for a shortcut and it looks like it could be pulled from rear.

    Thanks

    Mixed fuel vs Oil Injection
Wanted to share an experience with you that may determine mixed gas or injection.   When I first started messing around with gas around my lexan I spilled straight 87 octane on one of the doors.  The lexan instantly turned white.  I replaced it and never thought of it again until I spilled gas on the other door.  This time the door was not affected near as bad and I actually sprayed windex on it and wiped it off.  No apparent damage to the lexan.  I could not figure out why the difference until I relized that I mixed the gas with two stroke oil 50/1.

I have seen several discussions about alcohol in fuel and the affect of fuel on the fiberglass tanks.   I am wondering if fiberglass tanks are better protected on the inside by mixing the gas.  It does add a level of safety and based upon my experience with the lexan, something changed the ability of the gas to destroy lexan when it is mixed with 2 stroke oil.

    This is just a guess.

Test a piece of lexan yourself and see if you get the same results.
