The Nexus 7 is a 7" tablet. I got mine a month ago on eBay for $150
with free shipping. It's a2012 model, 32 GB, has a bright screen that u can see in daylight. It was the tablet avare recommended. It uses the android operating system which is different than what an iPad uses. It can go on the internet, in fact I'm typing this message on mine now but you need WiFi to do it. Jim Chuk

My understanding of why Avid went with the new style mount was to get rid of some of the engine vibration. Jim Chuk

Didn't get any use out of the wheel yet, it's for an avid I'm rebuilding. Wasn't all that good a deal, had to rebuild it. Other than it having a better tire on it than stock, I have almost as much into it as a new one... No free lunch as they say. Jim Chuk

The topic was ice fishing, and so I'll wonder a bit from where it's at now back to the original title.  My son sent me this picture of one of the carpenter's that work for him who has been fishing a lot up on Lake of the Woods in northern Mn/ Canada.  4' of auger wasn't enough to get through the ice.  Each extention on the auger is 2' long.  I'm about 100 miles south of Lake of the Woods, and we had 6" of fresh snow yesterday and -4 F this morning.  Supposed to be about -10 F tonight.  At that rate, they will be ice fishing for a good while yet.  I'm getting out of here and heading to SC for a couple of weeks tomorrow.  Hope the furnace keeps running so the place doesn't freeze up....  Jim Chuk

  7. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Hello and to the point

When you do a search on the FAA website under make and model, there is an upper box that lists manufacturer, and lower box that list model.  If you type in Avid Flyer in the model box, it will pull up 517 matches for the model.  By going through each of the planes listed, you can look for serial # that are likely to be a model C.  Ed, I believe you are correct in your last post, the builder is the manufacturer.  Some guys make up their own serial #, I think they may have made up their plane from parts, maybe even a reconstructed aircraft and then with a different serial # there wouldn't be 2 airplanes with the same # in the FAA data base.  Don't know why, but I just now typed in Avid Flyer model C and came up with 7 listed aircraft.  This morning I'm sure there was only one.  One of them has a serial # of 351, so that might be close to the break point between the B and C models.  Just typed in Avid in the model box and that brought up 823 listings.  Search the serial # from 350 to 1000 and you should find all kinds of C models.  Jim Chuk

If you mean you need to find 25 C model Avids, got to the FAA website, and do a search for make and model.  Maybe just go with Avid Flyer as model, and then look through them indivigually.  Just looked quick that way, and there are 517 Avids listed.  There is only one Avid Flyer model C listed if you type that in the model box.  However, just using Avid Flyer  there will pull up the rest of the Avids.  Then you have to go by serial # to tell which one are C models.  I believe from about 1000 and higher, are MK IVs, and I'm not sure off hand how high up the B model went.  Maybe 300-400, but that's just a guess.  Jim Chuk

  10. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic tail wheel springs

There was a good article in the last Sport Aviation magazine about tailwheels and correct castor and such.  In there, is said the bottom of the verticle axle should be ahead of the top.  As the spring gets bent to far, the bottom of the verticle axle gets behind the top and that is one of the main problems causing tail wheel shimmy.  Just googled it and found this picture which describes what I was trying to say.  JIm Chuk

I think part of the increase in cost of diesel is mandated "green" additives and low sulfer restrictions.   I remember when I was in Montana in the early 70s we were getting fuel for .15 cents per gallon for the logging equiptment.  Times have changed..... Jim

Just did a google search, and see that I'm spelling The Duluth Mn. supplier's name wrong.  It's Seelye Plastics.  Don't know if they will ship out one or two sheets though.   Jim

Look for it on line.  Polycarbonate is the material name.  Lexan is just a brand name.  I'm sure you can beat ACS's prices.  Also, check out a commercial glass installer locally.  Have them include it on their next regular shipment to avoid the freight perhaps...  Shipping is now highway robbery.  Just got 4 gallons of Poly-Spray today from Wicks (10% off in March sale) and the freight from Illinois to Mn was $32 and change.  Jim Chuk

  14. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Super disappointed with AC Spruce Transaction

The .090 came from a local commercial glass installer.  My son is a construction superintendent (copied the old man) and this guy works with him quite a bit.  I had the kid tell him to order a sheet as I'm now retired and don't have the pull with some of these guys like I used to have.  I said no rush, just include it with another order (no extra shipping cost)  Might have been cheaper because of all that.  The .060 sheet was from Seeley Plastics.  They have a branch in Duluth (75 mi away) and that was their price to me.  I picked it up at their place.  Seeley was good to work with, I bought a 4'x10'x3/16" sheet of UHMW for ski bottoms a while back and their price beat everyone else.  Jim Chuk

Hi Leni,  what thickness lexan did you need?  I have one 4x8 x.090 and one 4x8x.060 that I wont need for a while and can replace them on my next trip to Duluth, Mn.  Check shipping costs from 55719 and see what it would be.  I got the .060 for $55 and the .090 for $85.  I can make a box for nothing.  I have about 10 sheets of cardboard 4'x10'.  The lexan is about a year old, still wrapped with the protective plastic.  Jim Chuk

  16. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic tail wheel springs

Funny how it goes, but I was re arching a tail spring yesterday.  I have one of those Northern Tool 20 ton presses,  and it worked nice.  Had a 2X6 on the bed of the press, used 2 long 3/4" bolts that sat on the 2X6, and one long 3/4" bolt on top of the spring that the press pushed down on.  The bottom bolts would push into the wood and didn't want to roll away when the spring started to bend down like they would have if they were setting on steel.  Worked real good.  Hopefully that makes the tailwheel shimmy go away.  Jim Chuk

The extra metal welded into the seat truss is a good thing,(in the third and fourth pics.)  as this is a weak area in these planes.  Jim Chuk

Jabiru engine mount and cowl info needed
I can't find it, but a day or so ago, someone said they have a Jabiru motor mount for sale.  A guy on the avid Yahoo groups just posted that he was looking for a Jab mount, and a cowl.  I emailed him to look on this site for both.  I have the # for the fiberglass outfit in Belgrade Montana that makes the cowls somewhere, but couldn't find it just now.  Maybe someone can help the guy out.  I think he is from France though....  Jim Chuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Avid flyer MK 4 for sale with extras!

My last MK IV didn't have the baggage door either, but had everything inside for it and you had to load it over the top.  The builder just never put the door on, but covered over it.  Serial 1045D so I'm sure it's a MK IV.  Looks like a MK IV cowl to me, I had a Holman cowl on a B model I had and the windshield is a lot more sloped then what I think I'm seeing here.   Interesting story about this plane,  I remember seeing a picture of an Avid in either an old Experimenter or Sport Aviation magazine from about 1992 or so and it was listed then under completions.  I'm sure it was the same plane. Kind of a distinctive paint scheme and it stuck in my head. Sometimes when I would see an old Avid or Kitfox, I would run the N # to see if it's still around.  I think I did that with this one as well, but it's probably been a few years ago.   Don't know if I want to spend 4 hours looking for that magazine just now though to see if I'm right.   Jim Chuk

Be careful if you google Karlos Kunner redrives like I did.  It gave me nothing that way but an option of a different spelling,  (Kuner.)  Ended up finding out I could meet beautiful blonde Russian girls.  Got out of there quick, hope I (my computer) didn't catch anything  Jim Chuk

If you are still thinking about the Jabiru at all, check what serial # the engine is.  Their early engines had solid lifters and had less problems then the next series of engines, I put about 400 hrs on a 2200 with solid lifters.  They went to hydrolic lifters and had some issues with valve stems cracking and ruining the pilot's day.  Latest engines seem to have those bugs worked out.  Cooling is also somewhat of an issue with some 3300s.  They are a beautiful engine and run very smooth when all is okey though.  There is a lot of info in the Yahoo jabiruengines  (one word) group files.  Join and do a bit of reading before you buy.  Take care,  Jim Chuk

  25. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Those of you with dual wing tanks, lets talk plumbing to the header?

Lot of guys that use a vent line on the Avid header tank have a valve in that line and close it when the air is out of the tank.  That worked quite well for me.  Vent will suck gas out in flight thought if vent valve is open.  I think that was exaggerated with the ram air tubes in the fuel tank caps.  Jim Chuk
