  1. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic HELP can anyone tell me what this means

There has to be a certain amount of free space between the parts  on the gear shaft.  I don't have a manual in front of me, so I'm going by memory, and a poor one at that  :-)  The parts are assembled, and a measurement is taken.  Then the right amount of shims are added to make the right amount of free space.  My Rotax overhaul manual explains how it's done, but I don't have that with me here.  Hope this was what you were asking.  JImChuk

The Avid ribs are different from the Kitfox ribs at the tail end.  On the Avid the cap strips go all the way back to a point and meet.  Here is an Avid rib.  JImChuk

I couldn't see the pictures either, but a few weeks ago, I was watching an old u tube video of early Alaska aviation, and Noel Wein had a yellow airplane with folding wings they pulled out of a narrow door on a hangar. They said it was a Fairchild 71.    When I googled Fairchild 71 I didn't see any indication of folding wings though.  Nothing new under the sun they say....  Still give Dean a lot of credit for what he did.

I just googled it and found this.  Seems like the price was the same about  6 years ago.  JImChuk

  8. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Need to replace aluminum wing tank

The aluminum tanks in Kitfoxs and Avids did start to leak after a while.  3 of the 3 al. tanks in Avids I had started to leak after a while.  In the first Avid with one tank, it started to leak a while after I sold it.  In the other Avid with 2 tanks, they started to leak before I sold it, I sealed the tanks and they held for a while.  I believe they eventually started leaking again.  If it was me, and I was wanting to recover the wings anyway, I would of course change to fiberglass and be done with it.  If I was hoping to keep it going for a while and maybe eventually having to deal with it, then I would buy the seal kit and use it, while hoping it would last as long as possible.  JImChuk

Not really what you asked, but you might try sloshing it with a tank sealer.  Might work for a while.  Cost about $40 or so.  Have to take the wing off and roll it around a bunch with the sealer in it.

The leading edge being mentioned on an Avid wing is really a  piece of aluminum glued to the top, front 16" or so of the ribs.  That's why it would come in a roll.  This picture shows it in place.  JImChuk

Ya, you're right Ed.  I guess I'm just trying to say these planes are plenty flyable as they started out...  JImChuk

Lead the turns with the rudder, and watch/believe the ball.  No big deal with the adverse yaw IMHO.  JImChuk

If you are looking at the website home page, (any page really) there is a search box in the upper right hand corner.  If you type in a few key words you can usually find what you're looking for in the archives.  Or you can ask like you did, and maybe some one will do it for you.  :-)  This topic was discussed for quite a while just a few months ago.  Although, if you just joined, you wouldn't have seen it then.  Here you go.  Give Leni the business!    ;-)   JImChuk

I would not start off flying the plane with a negative flap angle.  My earliest Avid got quite squirrely when the flaperons were in a reflex (negative) position.  My advice is start flying with flaperons at 0 degrees.  Have the setting there if you want, but don't use it right away.   I don't have the info handy that you are referring to, but basically what you want is for the flaperons to go up and down an equal amount, and to have the stick centered when both flaperons are at the same angle.  Steve Winder from Avid recommended clamping a stick on each flaperon that stuck out the back 2' or so.  with the joystick all the way to the right, measure from end of the stick to the floor on each side.  Then with the joystick all the way to the left take measurements again to the floor.  If you have the same measurement up and down on both sides, you are set right.  Reason for the long sticks, is it exaggerates the dimentions  so it's easier to see what progress you are making as you adjust them.  Hope that makes sense, and is kind of what you were asking about.  One last point, if you have to much flaporon angle, you will start to get control reversal.  Maybe at 15 degrees you are ok, but be careful when you try it the first time.  JImChuk

  18. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic NorCal getting pummeled

Actually I do have an anchor.  I bought one yesterday.  Had a piece of concrete block on there before.  The anchor is hanging off the front with the black rope running to the front.  Have a hook in the rope and a hole in the gunnel to keep it up.  Unhook the hook, and the rope plays out till it gets to the end of the rope, and the anchor is deployed.  The end of the rope is tied onto my seat, so it is easy to grab and pull the anchor up.  Worked good today when I tried it.  Latest weather report looks like we may get some storms later this evening.  JImChuk
PS  note to self, read a bit more closely.  right after I hit send, and it posted, I see you said MOTOR .... not anchor.  Actually makes more sense now.   :-0

I think it's all going north of me.  Was a nice day today, low 70s.  I went fishing in the canoe I bought.  There is a shallow salt water lagoon about 1/2 mile X 10 miles about 400' north of me.  Some people who have a place on the lagoon let me leave it on their dock, and can use it when I'm not.   Haven't caught much, but it's something to do.  Water has to warm up a bit for the fishing to improve.  JImChuk

At one point in this thread, we were talking about category and class endorsements for sport pilot license holders.  I was looking for something else tonight (for ED :-)  and ran across this page from the FAA listing category and class endorsements.  JImChuk

  21. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Weather finally broke

I've been watching the weather back home, and do kind of miss the winter flying (or flying period!)  I did see that last Friday morning, it was -35 at my home town.  At the same time, it was +65 where I am.... 100 degrees warmer.   I should have drug a plane down here.   JImChuk

I'm trying to remember from when I worked on the wiring on my 912 Kitfox 4, and I think the 2 white wires are the kill switch wires.   That was at least 5 years ago, so don't bet the farm on it.   I'm not near them now where I could look either.   JImChuk

  23. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Min RPM to generate spark (582 Rotax)

Some B boxes have an oil slinger piece.    On the back end of the large gear if I remember right.  I think it was tried for a while and deemed not necessary.   Maybe that is why  the oil foamed in one gear box, and not the other.  Just a guess though.  JImChuk

  24. 1avidflyer added a post in a topic Wings, metal leading edge or no

As you said, it's not required.  None the less, it might not hurt to have someone else give it a once over.  Some times we miss things that a second set of eyes will catch.   If all is good, then you didn't need it.  On the other hand....... :-)  JImChuk

You can hand prop a Rotax with CDI, but just barely.  You really have to flip it over fast.  I never was able to do it on a cold (winter time) engine.  JImChuk
