Price seems really high to me, does it have the engine?  When I bought my MK IV kit it came with a new 912 Rotax and I paid about the same as what you are talking.  By the time you complete that kit you can expect to have $14,000 rapped up in it and and some years of missed flying. As mentioned you could be flying a 582 powered Fox or Avid yet this spring for the same or less momey.  Don't get me wrong I love building and may build another plane someday but if you want to fly and go out and have some fun now.  Ok that's my two cents worth.  Welcome a board this is a great group that has a wealth of information what ever you decide.

The reason the Avid and any other kit that has went out of business is not on the approved list is the manufacturer must apply to be on the list.  In other words there is no path to get on the list without the manufacture doing the necessary paperwork to be approved.
My DAR had me complete the form before he came down to do the inspection.  I sugggest that you do the same, it will save you at least an hour of time with the DAR and you are the one that is required to fill out the form and sign it anyway.  It really is pretty simple once you get into the  swing of it.
the 3rd will be here before you know it that is exciting, it's getting close to that big day now!

Glad you found both solutions, you should be ready for the good weather to fly your time off.
Maybe I will make it down your way later this spring, I have family in the Springs.

Yes we get some great winds here in the winter.  Semi blow overs are the norm.  Winds are forecast to be strong all week.  Any day I can fly in March is a bonus.

The lower opening is the radiator and the oil cooler is on the back side of that.  The oil temp runs about 175 this time of the year if I don't cover part of it.

Way to go.  I don't idle mine below 1600 and for the most part about 1900.   Just made my cowl opening half the original size by glossing in the lower half to the split line and they are still larger than thy need to be.

Having flown behind a VW I would not consider one again and doubly true for an Avid with one.  If it has not flown in 12 years, there is a 90 percent chance that it was not preserved (the engine).  There were several different VW conversions out there and some were poor at best.  I had a 2180 Revemaster which is one that is ok and the Great Plains was also one of the "good" ones.
That video is amazing but is the exception for a VW powered plane.  I don't recall it saying what was done to the engine to get that kind of performance and if the engine lasted more than a few weeks.
Mine was in a Q2 by the way which was ok with a short prop.
One data point and it is worth what I charged you.

There are only a couple of goats and a couple of deer in the area so I don't hunt them.  My buddy has a hay farm with some barley also so there is much better hunting on his place.
The Jackalope was first put together by a taxidermist in Douglas, just fifty miles from here.  They have ten foot tall statue in the town square of one.

Guess we will have to get into a discussion about MMO or something to get a little fire going here.
Landed at the cabin for the first time this year, the road is still drifted in but the runway is clear. This was last years foto but this years looks about the same.
The second one is Monday's take.

It is on the bottom of the engine probably 6" from the flange  Ii like the copper tubing idea if you can keep it from touching.

Mine is just thin aluminum flashing, a beer can will work and it wraps about halfway around the fire sleeve.  It is tight enough it holds its self in place.  Thinking about it, I have a piece of fiberglass cloth in between the metal and the fire sleeve.

I have the same situation and added an aluminum shield that is tight against the firesleeve and the exhaust.  It has been working fine, I just keep an eye on it. 500 hrs so far.

  16. wypaul added a post in a topic Flaperon mixer

One thing to check is to see if your flaperons control horns are hitting your turtleneck on full deflection.  On my MK IV, I loose a lot of roll control at full flaps and so for the most part do not use them on full deflection.  It has been suggested to save the flap handle until you are comfortable wearing your plane.  The rudder really becomes a bigger part of keeping safe with full flaps.
Cant wait to hear your flight reports, be safe.

Yes, to be clear, I agree, I do not use the flap function in strong winds cross or otherwise.

The flaperons are also very good for crosswind landings, I am still amazed at how well the Avid handles direct crosswinds.

  19. wypaul added a post in a topic Need to replace aluminum wing tank

The Taylorcraft F21 just to name one had leaky tanks due to poor mounting design of the tank.  If a tank was designed with a good mounting system for the Avid/Fox line the Al could work.  F21 came up with a solution thru design change.

If you are using a master solenoid controlled by your master switch no other switch is necessary because the battery is disconnected when the master switch is off.

I run a cable from the battery to the ground buss and from the buss to the engine ground.  All of this is covered in the book if you decide to get it.  There are other ways of doing it for sure.

The ground buss is a common ground point.  Although the airframe could be used for the ground it is not recommended.  Checkout aeroelectric.com and purchase his book and disc for the best buy for info on aircraft electrical.

What I don't see is a dedicated ground to the case of the regulator perhaps it is on the firewall side of the mounting bolt.

One other word of caution install the capacitor with the terminals up.  They are vented and the vent can become plugged if not properly installed and cause them to explode.

  25. wypaul added a post in a topic Earth X Battery Warning!!!

I will be the first to admit that this is over my head.  I would ,if I were you, copy your post and present it to aeroelectric users group. Thanks for your detailed post. Maybe EarthX will respond with some insight into their circuitry that may shed some light into this.  Is your alternator internally regulated or do you have a stand alone regulator?
The crowbar does react in milseconds but with all of the variables in your situation I cannot say if it would do the job.  I will do some investigation for my own peace of mind.
