As stated in post #2, 26 gauge for galvanized. It isn't a guess either. It is what FAR 23.1191 calls for.  You can got to 0.015 for stainless but you originally asked about only galvanized. Although a homebuilt doesn't have to comply with part 23, in this case it is prudent.

Forgot to mention. The old battery was fine above about 40 reg F?

I got sick of not being able to start in northern Illinois winter so I installed a 20 ah agm battery. Weighs 15.4 pounds but I'd rather lose the useful load and be able to start when I want to. Read somewhere that the 582 needs 300 rpm to start. At 10 reg F the old battery couldn't do it. The new one cranks over 500 rpm at that same temp and has plenty of reserve.

No help on the footwell measurements as I have a Kitfox and not an Avid, but 26 ga is the minimum thickness needed for a firewall and is what my Kitfox IV has.

For painting stripes, 3m fineline. For everything else I use the 3m blue painters tape.

That is the one I use. As mentioned, don't use the universal sticks the kit comes with. They are rubbery and not the same material as the tanks. Tank should have a plastic symbol like attached if it is HPDE.

Not a kitfox/avid tank, but I have many times repaired polyethylene gas tanks on snowmobiles and ATVs by plastic welding.  I do use the Harbor freight plastic welders that look like a soldering iron with a shoe type foot. I don't use those universal plastic weld sticks like come with the Harbor Freight plastic welders.   I generally look for something that has the same plastic symbol as what I'm plastic welding, which in the case of gas tanks is usually HDPE. I've used 5 gallon buckets cut into strips and also old gas cans cut into strips as filler. I plastic weld the crack without filler, then add filler as needed to come up past level giving it a good amount of filler in and over the crack. I have done at least 5 gas tanks this way and have never had one leak at or adjacent to a repair, and this is on off-trail snowmobiles and ATVs that are ridden rough and wind up upside down on every trip they go on. Be sure to flush the tank out first to get all the fuel out first.

Thanks.  That is a nice looking setup and easy the way they have it set up. I need to decide if I'm going to stick with the Matcos on my project airplane and this gives another option.
Final questions. Are the rims one piece or split rims and are the tires tubeless?

That looks real nice. Are the wheels the Douglas wheels that came stock with many Kitfoxes?  Also, how does the brake disk attach to the wheel/hub?
    Thanks.

I see you have some bent fuselage tubes. Look in my thread for how to straighten those.

The issue you may run into is that it is obviously a Kitfox and as such should have a FAA Bill of Sale from Denny Aircraft, Skystar Aircraft, Kitfox Aircraft, the guy you bought it from etc. Without the bill of sale I don't think you will be able to resurrect this one as its former self. So the next problem you will have is getting it registered and a new airworthiness as a new airplane. You can try the "Built from parts" route, but depending on the FSDO or DAR that might not work. I'd check first to see what they will allow.

What was the n-number I can get the FAA docs and you will then know the exact story.

Something to be aware of. The factory asks what your wing twist is when ordering model 1-3 tanks, and they are custom made for that twist. Just because it is from a 1-3 doesn't mean one size fits all.

My bad. is nylon what is called for on the hinges?

That's polyethylene tubing. He asked about nylon. They are not the same.  Nylaflow is one type of nylon tubing. Not sure exactly what you are looking for but nylafow is available at wicks and they have 5/16" OD.

not entirely true. Most VW engines in airplanes are left hand, but there are some that are right hand. Most VW aircraft engines drive the prop from the end that had the generator pulley in the car. The opposite rotation is accomplished by running the prop off of the flywheel end of the engine rather than the pulley end. Steve Wittman's V-Witt Formula V racer was built this way way way back when.  Great Plains also currently markets a VW engine conversion that drives the prop off the flywheel end.
