You need to get out on a snow machine and have it quit. I have personal experience with a friends four stroke Yamaha phaser. Ignition does fail. You accusing me of being old?

Way to complicated. All that electronic crap waiting to put you into the bush.

Thanks for the insights. I know when things go bad there is no time for thinking. You need the right response immediately. Do you care to comment on what specifically went wrong with the engine? Thanks. B

  6. IFMT added a post in a topic I have always wondered " what if "

AC 43.13-2B chapter 5 has lots of details about skis. Not a bad idea to review it if you are planning any ski flying. Angle of incidence of the ski is very important. To much up as in rear limiter cables to long leads to very spooky handling indeed. http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/AC 43.13-2B.pdf

  8. IFMT added a post in a topic Dual Pumps Required?

Just for clarity the thread has morphed into two lines. Those running two stroke/four stroke Rotax with the diaphragm pump that is standard and ED, myself and others with ea 81 conversion. There is no pump mounted on the subaru. I wouldn't think about flying an EA 81 without a fuel pump and a back up. I doubt there would be adequate reliable flow for an EA 81 to perform without.

  9. IFMT added a post in a topic Dual Pumps Required?

My soob with Holly carb has 2 facet pumps in series. Only one is running at a time. Has independent switch to each pump. Fuel flows through the non running pump no problem. Being that the carb sits quite high on the EA 81 there might not be much gravity feed on climb out. Carb on continental and lyc is low below the engine.

Great info. I am wondering what is the preferred coolant in the older vintage 912 80 hp?

  12. IFMT added a post in a topic The buzzard

The buzzard is an all around bigger airplane than the Avid. You can glide the buzzard down power off no problem. Very stable in steep bank. Doesn't require the amount of opposite aileron and rudder pressure like the avid. Carries two people with ease. My bent avid has the sube so wing loading is much higher. The buzzard wing is huge compared to the avid. Having both I can say the Buzzard is definitely more docile. Flying an Avid, especially a heavy Avid, will make you a better taildragger pilot. Power off my Avid would drop. Always needed to give a blast of power to arrest sink rate on landing. Buzzard is side by side seating. Lots of room.

Thanks gentlemen. Had a great day. Fired up some of my old engines that hadn't run for a while.
My woman made a great supper with friends and just hung out. A few beers and a little scotch. Still feel about 30. Waiting to grow up!

I don't have a manual but I will try to contact the company that produces the plane. It is still produced as far as I can tell in Ontario.

How critical is rib stitching/stapling? Avid did not specify it because of the wide cap strip for glue. The buzzard I have is an aluminum rib with the fabric glued as well. No stitching/staples or screws. Just wondering.

Looks like there are different bell crank systems out there. Mine has a swivel right at the bell crank. My picture is poor but maybe you can see it.

Make sure the jam nuts are put on the right way (flat side to the jam) and are tight to prevent the thread from becoming the rotation point. When I first got my Avid this was all  funky. Also make sure you have full stick travel left to right. The tie rods can easily catch in the control column tube if not fit just so. Cheers.

  21. IFMT added a post in a topic Subaru Stratus

Wide open in a car is rated at 4600 I believe. Not 5700. I don't know of an actual specific aircraft data parameter. The temps and oil pressure are derived from automotive application manual and experience.

  22. IFMT added a post in a topic Subaru Stratus

When I first got it I was at 11 or so as well. Plane would easily exceed 100 mph but takeoff roll suffered. I can't remember exactly but maybe I was a little higher static at 8.5. Wide open around 4600 with 1.84 reduction. I found with the stock cam it just makes more noise and no more pull by flattening below 8 degrees. 3 blade warp drive cut down to 68 inches. I think Randy has an in flight adjustable.

A vacuum gauge is nice. In a pretty much stock EA81 you are looking for about 5 inches at 4000 rpm cruise. (holley carb)This will give you 80 mph with warp drive prop at 8.5 degrees. Oil pressure should be 40psi, temp 170. Temp will go as high 190 on a hot day climb out. The rpm increase in the stratus is primarily from the s-250 cam grind. Raises the torque curve to higher rpm. Without the higher rpm cam grind you are not making more power. Flattening the pitch increases rpm but no more pull after that 4200+ static (stock). Carb balancing would be critical on the stratus with the bing carbs. To do it right you need gauges just like a 912. I'm sure the stratus makes more heat though because it is making more power. Michael Templeton in Washington bought the company and renamed it Stratus 2000. He's closed up but maybe you can track him down. I chatted with him once and he was informative and easy to talk to.

    The buzzard
Here is what's getting me by until the Avid gets restored. Low hour 912 but runs a little rough. (Carb balance I hope) Very docile to fly and actually takes some getting used to because of the float factor compared to the Avid. Needs some mandatory upgrades and tune up because of age. Now I'm learning about carb balance and gear box noises.

  25. IFMT added a post in a topic DAVE JOHNSON EA-81 WITH REDRIVE EBAY

I have a Dave Johnson redrive. Well built and absolutely trouble free. Yes the plane ends up heavy at 726+ pounds empty with counterweight on the tail. My version is a pretty much stock EA 81.(bent right now) Take offs were 450-500 feet with just me. Performance in climb and cruise was good. Not so good with a passenger. If you plan mainly yourself and gear the soob works well on an avid. Keep in mind that with the power off it's not a floaty thing and it will drop. Keep the speed above 50 to keep it flying safely. 60 on approach. The soob is a great running, smooth, reliable engine. I just got a 912 and now I'm learning about finicky.
