Still looks good!  But for now, I'll play with the original gear till the kitty gets built back up.

My trailer was included with the aircraft when I bought it. I am curious as to what one cost already built?  Since I paid way too much for the package when I bought it and it fits the standard gear Fox, was wondering how much I overspent. But I understand prices are going up on Avid/Foxes, when you can find them. A basic ultralight kit nowdays goes for 15K-20K.  OUCH!

Looks just like my Fox trailer. Replace the bungee cords on the ramps with a steel strap w/quick pin and you also have a capture mode for the main wheels.

One very important thing he did not cover. At full throttle (slides up) you need to be able to reach in with your finger and manually lift the slide an 1/8" or so up. This assures that at full throttle you are not putting pressure on the little soldered ball on the end of the cable. Usually by the means of a throttle stop somewhere in the system. Ramming full throttle in a panic or excited state you can pop the soldered ball off the cable and then that slide drops to idle and your going to land when you don't want to. Which is why you added full throttle to start with. The little ball is peened and soldered on and you can break it off by slamming it clear to the top where the top of the carb is the stop and puts the pressure on the little ball. One has 1/4" of distance left to go after the slide clears the carb throat so you need to be able to manually move the slide up a tad to be sure its not forced up against the top. A throttle stop somewhere in the system is the easiest way to avoid this. I hope this is clear cause it is critical not to break the little round tip off the cable. Just removing the air filter can verify this.

  6. Allen Sutphin added a post in a topic Need help identifying this pully

Its a cable pulley used to guide the cable. Get one close to size and make it work. A little smaller or larger, the turnbuckle will take up the slack or add some. Extend the mounting tabs if necessary and carry on.

Always make a test panel when covering. Usually a 3'X4' panel is big enough. Or make one for every major color. You can use it to test paint color, making a patch repair, or use it to cut patches for a damaged area that is color matched already. Even a 2x4 frame will suffice. Go thru the complete process, gluing, UV coating and paint so it is ready to use for repairs or testing repairs before doing it on the aircraft fabric. One always has scrap fabric left over. After you are done, cut it out, roll it up and put it on the shelf for future use. You'll find it handy later on. Also write on the backside, type of fabric, process used, color, # of coats, etc. You might forget later.

I've also had good luck with fingernail polish. Cheap, get it anywhere and comes in weird colors, too. Even cheaper if you borrow (steal) your wife's.

In my challenger (503) I used slips quite a bit. They can be done at a reasonable airspeed and throttle setting. A 582 w/water cooled is not a big an issue as an air cooled engine, but still needs to be monitored. 250 deg was the lowest mine ever dropped to. And that was also my warm-up temp before full power. I am not sure what the min temps on a 582 are.

With a little hillbilly engineering, some tubing and a little time, you can make a Lazy-Boy recliner fit. My specialty is turning expensive metal into worthless scrap.

It will work just fine. Color matching can be tricky. All you are wanting to do is seal the chip.

Yes, his shop did. Don't know if he did personally, probably Cody did. Cody is pretty sharp on engines. They started rebuilding 912's now, also. I had him change the old boat anchor air guide and installed the new carbon fiber one. Saved a few pounds there. Sold the fuel injection system and going back to carbs. It worked great but I prefer carbs since I can look at them and see if something is wrong or worn. Hard to do with a computer controlled system. Probably why I'll never own a 912, outside of the price. My normal altitude doesn't change but maybe 3000' + or - so carbs work good for my flying. I knew the Bing carbs pretty well but this engine uses Delorto carbs. They don't seem too much different from Bing's but parts are cheaper. So a short learning curve is coming.

    Engine
Just got word that my engine is on its way home. Had it completely redone with a couple new improvements and a new gearbox, back to new condition. Might as well have a new engine for a new airframe. Airframe not really new but, stripped, sandblasted, painted and rebuilt with new hardware and replaceable parts. Probably will have more invested in it than I could have bought one for but at least I know what I'll have. But then I'd probably do the same to any aircraft I bought. A new 30 yr old Kitfox model 2, maybe I ain't right in the head!

I tried it. I didn't like the results. It will work over the Stewarts but I didn't like the finish.

  17. Allen Sutphin added a post in a topic The Magnum is here!

Only thing missing on that Magnum is the little wheel on the tail !  I took a checkride in a castering nosewheel aircraft (DA-20) and didn't like it worth a darn. Too hard to wiggle thru tight places, constantly riding the brakes, overall a PITA. Took considerable effort to get it to turn. Might have been the aircraft, but don't care for that type of steering.

I'd be interested in buying it if you decide to part with it.  If not maybe a couple good pictures? Thanks!  I plan on using a Hirth 55 hp but its the same mount.

I guess I am getting ready to jump into the same thing with my model 2. Have to build an engine mount for it and as of right now plan on centering it on the fuselage, level with no offset. I can't seem to find a 503 mount for a model 2.

Jim Chuk, you have to be part hillbilly!  We have a contraption like that, which works great, if you put the whole family on top of it in lawn chairs. We call it a Sunday drive.

You wouldn't happen to have a GPL starter on that engine, would you?

I like the throttles mounted on the side such as a J-3. Feels more comfortable and I can use my R hand on the stick. Takes a little gum and bailing wire to have dual throttles but very doable. I also like a quadrant better than a pushy-pully  thingie in the middle!

TJay, being in the country has its ups and downs. Upside, no restrictions much, land wherever you can, walk out the backdoor and hunt or fish, very few no trespassing signs, and a lot of freedom. Downside, 2 hrs to the grocery store, doctor, and gas station. But you learn to plan ahead.
