  1. Ha, just spotted this old thread. We own this kit now. Not sure whether it will be sold or be kept as 'spares' for our MK4.

Out of interest folks, any idea what these parts are as they were missing by the time we purchased the kit.

  2. Avid special 'transitional' rib (speed rib lower profile with STOL/HH upper profile) is used to mate Root Rib #1 on an Avid Speed wing or Aerobat to the fixed rib on the fuse. If you search 'transitional' you will find several mentions with pics.

Thank you. So that must be what we have on our current aircraft with speed wings. As the kit has both wing types I'll look to see if there are transitional ribs already in the parts.

  3. Thanks both. That is a good plan and it appears that one aircraft was built in this style in the UK already, meaning it shouldn't be a problem to get approved. I thought the root ribs were always undercamber style to meet the fuselage, even on speed wings? Where does the transitional rib go?

  4. I want to add right seat brakes to our Avid MK4 which currently has MC-1 reservoir master cylinders for the left seat. Can anyone confirm whether it is okay to keep these when installing new non-reservoir master cylinders in series for the right seat. I've read somewhere about creating an unintentional parking brake function of both sides are used.. Are we better-off replacing the MC-1s?

  5. Mark is replying to emails to say that he can still make an extension kit.

I assume full HH wings would be better overall due to the lower washout and extra length?

That’s very interesting. I have access to a CNC router. Did you say you do have the flapperons?

i know it’s a long way but for me it might work...

I probably don't want to sell the flaperons seperatly.  I think the new avid outfit said they were making flaperons.  Not sure if they are though.  JImchuk

    Hi

It would be the wings and flapperons that I’d want as a complete set. Is there an accepted method to repair rib tails?

  7. I have a set of HH wings that need the rib tails repaired, along with the flaperons.   Keep saying I'm going to get to work on them, but haven't so far.  UK is a long way from Minnesota though.   Worst thing to make I would think would be the flaperons.  A router table and patterns and one could make the ribs fairly easy.  JImChuk

  8. Hi, thanks. I guess there are quite a few parts that are factory made in the wings. I’m in the UK which isn’t convenient!

I believe there are about 25 Speedwings here an one HH.

  9. Sort of a double post but I figured there might be more folks reading this section:

If a chap wanted to build a new set of new STOL wings for an Avid MK4, are there any plans available? Were the flapperons part of the kit or fabricated by the customer?

    Thanks for any help.

  11. Hi All

I have the chance to re-acquire the conventional gear Mk4 Speedwing that I briefly owned a few years ago but never got to fly. (I'm in the UK)

I already have a fast aeroplane so I'd like to build a set of big wings for the Avid to make it more of a short strip machine than in speedwing format. I'm looking for advice as to the best approach to this as I know there are a few options with both Avid and Kitfox wings and possibly with wing extensions. A few specific areas of questions:

If building wings, which ones? I'm not too bothered about speed but will need to have the wings approved by our LAA so would rather stick with a known Avid or Kitfox design. What design data/drawings/parts are actually available today? Where could I get flapperons assuming these were factory made parts?

Struts; Would I need to make new struts? I assume I'd need to reduce the washout; is it adjustable by rod ends or is that a make new struts thing?

Wingtip extensions: I know there used to be a kit but is this something drawings are available for?

    Any help much appreciated!

    Regards

  12. That'll be a lend-lease L-21 Super Cub supplied to Italy (and many other countries) in the post war years. There are lot of them and the L-21 Cub here in Europe. I think it would have had an O-290 originally. I used to instruct in one and owned an L-18.

  13. HI Fred

Just been looking at your website. Have you flown with the 850-6 Aero Classic tyres yet? I'm looking for ways of increasing angle of attack on the ground.

  14. Thanks Bryce. I assume we're talking empty CofG here?

Sounds like mine may be a little on the heavy side..

  15. Gosh Bryce, such personal questions for a first conversation... ;)
It weighs 588 lbs with 12.5" CofG. Is that good or bad?

  17. Thanks all and I'll certainly be posting some figures once I have some. I'm actually more of a STOL guy so am thinking of building some bigger wings at some point and maybe a taller/wider gear.
