    David,
The Avid is a sweetheart, and very easy to fly in airwork. The controls are light, and it has no bad habits (until you get the tailwheel near the earth, but that's not a nose-dragger's concern!)
I suggest that you find an EAA Chapter near you, they know lots of instructors and inspectors who understand our world, and are not afraid of it.
Good Luck and welcome to the neighborhood!

  4. nlappos added a post in a topic Rotax Red Head?

I just put in a 670 from Rotax Rick, and it is great. I posted a lot on it in the engine section. Weighs about 10 lbs more than the 582, and puts out about 91HP. Same engine mount, it is a drop in.

Yes, drawn is stronger and has tighter tolerances. Drawn tubing can be 20% stronger.
Here is a good discussion:  http://www.kamkiu.com/down/seamless_and_drawn_tube_information.pdf

  6. nlappos added a post in a topic Rotron RT600 XE 100 horsepower

Makes no sense. The curves show 60 HP at 7000 rpm, but the specs say 100 HP at 7500 rpm, 65 HP at 6500. Inconsistent, or they show a mix of data from two different engines.  Flaky stuff.

The biggest problem with ties is they get brittle after a few years, and lose a lot of strength. Steel wire, not so much.

  9. nlappos added a post in a topic TRANSPONDERS, MODE C or S needed?

    Jeff
That is an old Galaxy, but instead today I use an Ipad Mini II, using Garmin Pilot. It does all the moving map, and weather (when I have a sim card in it).  I love it and it works very well.
The Ipad and Galaxy both worked well, and both basically suck in daylight readability, the Ipad might be a little better, just a little.

  11. nlappos added a post in a topic Looking for Transponder advice

Double, just be sure that you understand, you cannot fly within 30nm of any Class B airspace like SLC without a Mode c transponder (see the red circle on the sectional piece below) , and after July 2020, you can't enter any class C airspace or Class B airspace without ADS-B out capability. Stay tuned we are all in the same boat. I installed an old EDO mode c transponder from Ebay with an encoder and am reasonably compliant today.

  12. nlappos added a post in a topic Hello from Utah

    Doubleclutch,
    Welcome to the Club!!
I agree about the power. I am in Parowan at 6000 feet, and my Avid Flyer MKIV calls for even more than the 582 (my MGW is 1150 lbs). For about 10 pounds more than the 582 you get 91 HP in a 670, and the plane becomes a really nice performer. I pulled my 582 and installed a Rotax Rick 670, which was a drop in on the 582 mount (all of which you'll have to fab with an A model.).

Great words, akflyer. I am waiting for one of us to pack a few Lion cells in a brick for about $50, slap on a monitor board, and create a 4 pound 30 AH battery. Heck, I might try that myself.

I will bet the typical black gunk plug fouling is not oil, it is rich gas mixture from the pre-historic Bing non-mixture system. With my Hacman to lean to 1050-1100 degrees on my 582, and automatic 50:1 mixing, I had pretty unfouled light brown plugs for many many hours. That included a long flight across the Rockies at 10,000 feet, prime territory for fouled plugs.
Also, I would always follow the manufacturer's 50:1 recommendation. That is the only primary lube!
BTW thanks for the great aero advice you always post, very cool.

  15. nlappos added a post in a topic Rebracing the tail section

I recommend the poly fiber practice kit, it has everything and is reasonable. I think there's enough fabric to do your job, but you could always buy another yard at the same time. The instructions are tops.

  17. nlappos added a post in a topic Fiberglass wing tanks removal

Fiberglass tanks can be Ethanol capable, so don't reject them automatically. It depends on the resin used in the tank's construction. My tank is a  retrofitted fiberglass tank that loves ethanol.

  18. nlappos added a post in a topic Prop for a 532 in the Rockies.

The prop companies have the computer software to work out exactly what you need. Depends a lot on the engine and gearbox ratio. I have a Warp Drive and love it, IVO is great, so is Kiev Props, and I had a wood Culver that was really nice.
Here is a list of many of them:  https://www.pilotmix.com/aviation-resources/propeller-manufacturers

And for the really cheapo pilots like me, a nice golf cart tire at $60 a piece!  The tire is pretty slick, and behaves well on pavement. And I swear my golf handicap is going down, too.

  21. nlappos added a post in a topic Tuned pipes

Actually the Rotax exhaust systems are tuned, across a wider rpm range. The folks who make pipes for the 582 and 670 (I am thinking like Mike Hair, who made mine) make them tuned for our purposes. A two stroke wants to have the sound wave in the exhaust pull the hot gasses out of the cylinder as part of their natural action.

  22. nlappos added a post in a topic to vent or not to vent?

From what I know of overflow bottles, they must be vented to the atmosphere. Your idea to connect the line from the radiator to the bottom seems like the right idea, as well. That way only fluid is exchanged with the radiator.

  25. nlappos added a post in a topic Tire comparison 8.00-8.50's

Yep, that's why grass is so nice, the tire makes little side force when in a small skid, and doesn't mind a little angle to the motion. Makes me want to try it, too!
