The post above yours shows all weights to 1/2 a lb! Maybe your browser doesn't open the pictures. Here is what it says:
Header 7 lb,  muffler 6 lb, motor mount 6.5, oil tank coolant tank and radiator 8 lb, electrics hoses nuts and bolts 5 lb, Apex engine, throttle bodies and Skytrax gearbox 144 lb, airbox and filters 2 lb, total 178.5 lb

The amount of cooling from a pound of blue ice is so insignificant it is unmeasurable. The whole Walmart Air Conditioner idea is junk.

  3. nlappos added a post in a topic Rotax 670

I used Rotax Rick, and swapped my 582 for the zero time 670. He recommended Mike Hair in Utah to do the pipes, Mike took my 582 muffler and modified it, making a perfect fit. He was not expensive at all. Here is the finished product:

    Mark,
I find Chinese eBay listings to be very deceptive. A few weeks ago a Chinese heater on eBay was the subject of a thread, and the listing deceptively claimed 4 times the actual heat capability, the watts it claimed were accurate, the BTUs were fictitious. And this listing says 5-24V sensor, not telling you the system needs 120-240V AC, except the fine print at the bottom, a long way from the deceptive headline.

  5. nlappos added a post in a topic low fuel warning device???

Clearly they use capacitance to detect the liquid level. Drawback: The units shown use 120V as their primary input power. The lying chinese company thinks we can't read their data plate. The SENSOR is 5V, but the processing box has 120V input requirement.
Jim Wiebe of Belite sells a nice one for our use, check out:  http://www.beliteaircraftstore.com/bingo-3-liquid-detector/

Uses water, not really an airconditioner. Basically a small swamp cooler.

  7. nlappos added a post in a topic New float plane needs a 670

    Anders,
I installed a new 670 about a year ago, and documented the results in a separate thread. Overall, it has been excellent. The install was a drop-in to the 582 mount. The exhaust fit perfectly, I had to cut the bottom of the cowl about 3" to accommodate the new exhaust muffler. Power is as advertised, starts and runs great, the weight increase is about 10-15 lbs, and that includes the new 3 bladed Warp Drive prop and the belly radiator (needed due to the extra power/heat of the 670). My new weight with new wide bush gear, new prop, new belly radiator and the 670 is a total of 19.5 lbs more than my 582. I operate at over 6000 feet takeoff, and typical DA runs 9000 so I see the power of a sea-level 582 here at 9000 feet.
Here is the entire thread, discussing install, performance and weights:

  8. nlappos added a post in a topic Dual radiator?

Those temps are pretty low, Anders. What is your ambient? My 582 would overheat (with 2 nose radiators in my D model) in climb at any ambient above about 60 degrees F, and would overheat wildly in cruise if I installed the heater cone on one radiator.

  9. nlappos added a post in a topic Avid 582 schematic

Here is the best source, the Rotax Installation Manual. see Chap 18 for the schematics and wire colors. All pretty simple. Page 18-2 has the exact color list.  https://www.cps-parts.com/cps/pdf/d00287.pdf

Simple answer: The key switch grounds the "mags" and prevents spark. The gray ("silver") wire is for the tach only (use a tiny tach, the regular analog tach is a POS).

Matthew, you say you think you have that ratio. Is the ratio stamped on the flat spot where the big C is stamped?

  11. nlappos added a post in a topic If you were to buy a new plane, what would it be?

A Carbon Cub or 17 Avid Flyers, same price for either side of the discussion. I"ll take an Avid, thank you very much.

FWIW, my polyfiber Avid MK IV undercamber is not stitched, it was done by a great builder in 1995, and is still tight and perfect.

Browning, what is the exact color and brand of paint you have there? I like it and want to use it!

  14. nlappos added a post in a topic Damn Brakes!!! / Seats

As you press on the brake, the firstpart of its motion locks flow so the pressure acts on the caliper. In other words, the brake cylinder at the pedal will not release the flow to the reservoir until the pedal is pulled back all the way. If your rigging doesn't let the pedal relax fully, the flow will stop at the cylinder and not let fluid pass to the reservoir. Try pulling the pedal back forcibly and see if that opens up the flow.

Paperwork! Is it currently airworthy and registered? Some misbegotten souls cancel both and then try to sell the aircraft, which is at best a paperweight until the buyer does backflips to the FAA to regain airworthiness. Original airworthiness limitations signed by the Friendly Aviation Agency. Logbooks, with last annual documented, as well as the Phase I signoff.
Then general build quality, fabric health, rib health (coin tap the entire length of every rib) and rib tail (flaperon support) health. Spar insides for gathered crap and animal turds (fold wing and look inside with a good flashlight), Controls for health and lack of rust, and the structural tubing for lack of rust, straight sections, esp seat pan and gear attach longerons. Wing tips for ground loop rash.

  16. nlappos added a post in a topic Base to final stall

Mark is right on the money, just shape your base leg for the nice lineup on final. On windy days with a cross wind, I just curve around the whole base leg. That being said, 30 degrees of bank wont get you in too much trouble, the extra G for that bank is only .15 g, so stall speed is not affected very much. You did nicely by holding 60 mph in the turn.

  17. nlappos added a post in a topic What kind of aluminum are the control sticks?

Actually, the stick should be able to hold against you pulling fairly hard against the stops, so you don't bend the controls or jam them with a big force. The Fed and Military regulations wisely require a pull test like that (flight control proof and operations testing) and I think Dean built that into his sticks and controls, which are pretty nicely designed.

My records show for original Avid tail dragger gear,  -1.6" for main axles, which is forward of the wing leading edge (the datum).

I also use a boat fuel flow gauge and totalizer that works like a charm. I have the old Northstar 201 system, which is unavailable, but Lowrance make a good one that runs about $450 for gauge and sensor. My Northstar is a charm, giving me great confidence in power settings and fuel remaining.

  22. nlappos added a post in a topic Interesting tear down on 582 failure

For those who cant watch the whole thing, there are many lessons to be learned by the video. The guys who disassembled the engine and investigated are really sharp and scientific.
As I saw it: The 582 engine quit on takeoff and a less than stellar landing back on the runway caused major airframe damage. Cause was horribly simple, major piston damage, the water was very low in the cooling system, because the overfill bucket was plumbed incorrectly, and its water level didn't actually indicate anything. And clearly the crew didn't open the radiator cap and look inside in a very long time. The crew's attention to the water temp is also in question, the timing of the start takeoff sequence makes it unlikely that a 582 would be up to temp in the few minutes from start to full throttle.
