Just goes to show you that even people in poor countries have the bug to fly,I take it there is not a local DAR in that part of Kenya.

That 800 will eat up a 912,might even be fuel fairly efficient with the fuel injection.I always like to see new combinations,if somebody doesnt try it then it never gets done.Randy

Im actually flying from a grass strip at Athol Idaho,Hackney Airfield. My instructor is Roger Dunham,he owns Rare Air Flying Service. Its almost like going back in time,1947 Piper Vagabond, prop start,75 horsepower but its cool as hell.I take my camper up there and spend the weekend while my wife takes pictures and probably laughs her butt off at my not so picture perfect take off and landings.I'll get it eventually and when I do Im a thinkin its going to be a blast.Im getting on that paperwork right now,the N number is just a reserved number so I need to retain it.Its the same number as my racecar so thats how it came about.I,ll post some flight pics after this weekend. Got the fuse painted now I will finish up inside and start final assembly. The paint turned out pretty good but never the way you want it to.The blue turned out way darker than I thought it was going to be and the yellow stripe looks almost gold.I should have sprayed the last couple coats of the filler in white instead of gray but Im happy and my wife likes it,thats a big plus right there.Ive been flying a Piper Vagabond for my tailwheel endoresment, my instructor told me if I could fly the Vagabond then I should be able to handle the Super Skyraider. He has a single place Skyraider that he flies alot so hopefully the transition will be half ass smooth.I have alot more respect now for tailwheel pilots,I thought with my drag racing experience along with my 172 experience it wouldnt be that hard.Wrong again, you actually use those pedals on the floor.Randy

  7. horsepower added a post in a topic Condition inspection time..582 checklist?

Its well known that flown airplanes are better off than hanger queens so it probably will go smooth. My buddy has an experimental with a 503 Rotax and he always does a compression test on his annual. They open up the inspection covers and look at the pulleys and cable tension.Check all the control ends and rod ends, not really sure how they gauge good from bad but he always passes. As active a flyer that you are I sure it will be a piece of cake.I,ll bet the Alaska boys would know what will need to take place. Those guys are major 2 strokers. Looks like you had a pretty fun trip, my goal is to fly my 40 off and fly some of the same country.Im a low time pilot so going to get a few more hours before I get too cocky.I go this week end for some tail wheel training in a Piper Vagabond.Your 582 sounds like it didnt miss a beat. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. Randy

    Getting Closer
I just logged some more time in on my builders log and its up to 701 hours.Im building a Super Skyraider and on their website they say builds quick in 300 to 400 hours,my ass.Maybe Im just really slow but it is starting to take shape.Wings are finished and fuselage is ready for paint.582 is going to get torn down for inspection and reseal. It only has 121 hours on it but has set for 5 years.Might be asking quite a few questions in the next few weeks so bear with me.Randy

    Safe Little Airplanes
Was just reading a September issue of Kitplanes magazine about the safety records of Avids and Kitfoxes.Seems these airplanes do very well in the safety catagory. It shows graphs of the different failures and failures with different engines. For some reason the Avid came out on top for fatal accidents and they were powered with more 2 strokes than the Kitfoxes. Not sure what you can read into it but if anybody is interested in reading get a Sept. 2010 Kitplanes magazine and look at the comparisons.Randy

I still have the engine to firewall mount but I dont have the 4 mounts that go with it so you would have to get them from Kitfox. If you need the mount let me know.Randy

  13. horsepower added a post in a topic 582 Best Idle Speed

I havent got my plane finished yet but the previous owner of my 582 said he set the idle around 2200-2300 RPMs.My gearbox is a 3 to 1 ratio with a 68 inch 3 blade prop.My brother-in law has his set about 2400, anything less and it shakes like hell.Im thinking seriously about putting a clutch on mine so I can idle it down to where it should be.Randy

Thats pretty impressive stuff, one year John Force was racing at Spokane Raceway and he was in line with the funny car body up,a C5 flew over and I remember him shaking his head as it flew over us,like what in the hell was that.If you fly up North stop in at St. Maries(s72)They have the big Paul Bunyan hoopla going on that weekend.Im usually archery hunting but will be home this year.Have a safe flight. You could probably do touch and go's inside of that beast. We drag race right by Fairchild and its awesome to see them fly over on final.Looks like they are just going to fall right out of the sky. Where are you going on your 1500 mile trip?Keep us posted.Randy

Is your 2-stroke Engine About to Fail
Anybody have any questions on their Rotax should watch this webinar presentation. It made me feel alot more comfortable about my 582.The guy definately knows his stuff,he talks about prop loading and jetting and everything that makes a aircraft 2 stroke different than a regular 2 stroke engine. It reduces the failure rate by a bunch if you do what he says.I know the 912 guys wont be into watching it buta lot of you on this forum may find it interesting. Some or most may have already watched but here is the website, not sure if you have to be a EAA member or not.It is titled, Is your 2 -stroke Engine About to fail? www.eaa.org/webinars

    Deer vs 206
A friend of mine came in just before dark a couple nights ago in a 206. He was training the owner of the plane, soon as they touched down a deer ran right in front of them and it all went downhill from there.Caved in the front gear and motormount, wiped out wing tip and ripped tail almost off.I see what they mean when they call them sardine cans, the deer was a fawn with spots still on it and it did all that damage.Luckily no one was hurt except their pride.Randy

    Door Seals
Anybody have any good ideas for door seals for my Skyraider?Im at the painting stage and Im looking at the gaps under my doors thinking it may get a little chilly for winter flying. There is nothing in my build manual about door seals, maybe nobody has them but if they do was wondering what they used.My plane is built a lot like an Avid or Kitfox only a tandem. Thanks Randy

  22. horsepower added a post in a topic 582 to 912 conversion

You can use the same radiator and the Grand Rapids 2000 can be converted to the 4 stroke, I called them awhile back as I have a 582 that is going in my Skyraider.I was contemplating on switching to a 4 stroke but it was alittle out of my price range.I think I will give my 582 a chance as I could do several rebuilds for the price of a 912.I cant remember the price to convert your EIS over but it wasnt much.Good Luck Randy

Nice job Joey,Thats a trip we all would like to take.Someday when my bird is done and I have a little more tailwheel and mountain flying experience I am doing a trip like that.It was pretty cool with the SPOT tracking you, looks like something we all should have especially up here in the NW and the Alaska boys should all have one.Me and a buddy were suppose to fly down to Johnson Creek Sunday morning but it didnt work out.Nice pics, might even use some for my screen saver.Glad to see your 582 purrred like a kitten, goes to show you that if you maintain them and treat them right they will treat you right.Good job man. Joey, Dont know for sure but I may be flying in on Sunday.A friend of mine has a Super Cub and was talking about going Sunday morning as he missed the fly-in a couple weeks ago.He says it has a great big runway so it will be a piece of cake with your plane. If I go I will look you up.Can you run 100LL with the 582 or will you scrounge up pump gas? Have a great time. Randy
