KNZ  has what looks like a "u" shaped shower moulding fitted between the dash top and screen so any water that runs down the screen is directed away from the electrics to the sides,I wish JFA had this, the plastic bag temporary fix is what saved the day.
the plastic tube idea sounds good

I use one of each so I can catch a potential ignition problem in flight,3 years on both no problems but a 50 ish rpm difference that seems to be temperature related.
for less than half the price the cheapy wins out

A group of got weathered in 4 days on our around the top of NZ safari.i had heard about leaky turtledecks so put surgical tape on the inside hinge line,no leaks at all! The windscreen to cowl was the problem (very wet radio$)

  4. Dusty added a post in a topic Recovering from a bounce

I was taught to go round if the strip is short,or if long strip, a quick stab of power as the plane starts to settle and relax back pressure on contact with the ground. This works well for me,
the slow steep approach works well but also a stab of power is sometimes needed as the elevator alone can't arrest the decent.
I fly dead stick landings a little faster and wheel on with a slight check forward on contact or sometimes light braking which also brings the tail up.

  5. Dusty added a post in a topic Kitfox Service Bulletin #45 Elevator Bolt Replacement

Just to be clear,as this issue has had me wondering!(I replace this bolt every annual)I haven't noticed any wear on any of the bolt. Mine is attached with a bracket on each side of the idler at the top,and rod ends at the bottom.
Did some foxes have only one bracket/tube for the top of the idler, and this is the reason for the service bulletin?
The photos are a little hard to see but I haven't seen the single mount before, does this mean the bulletin doesn't apply to the later type?

  6. Dusty added a post in a topic AVGAS Vs: MOGAS

Avgas is fine in a 582, KNZ ran 100ll for the first 750hrs no problem and I have put around 400 on the clock using what was easier to use.i overhauled the top end a while ago, apart from some buildup on the piston Crowns and exhaust there was nothing to indicate that avgas was being used.the only downside to avgas I can see is it will shorten the life of your muffler.
Yes your egt' swill be slightly cooler but not enough to worry about , or install a Hacman.

if your oil cooling system has spare capacity for cooling, try an oil to water heat exchanger,
One of our local flyers is using one with excellent results, and as a bonus his oil temp on warmup follows the wate temp.

  10. Dusty added a post in a topic Earth X Battery Warning!!!

I am curious as to what is the most common battery in power tools,as these seem to get plenty of abuse like stalling, repeated charge/discharge etc. These seem to be safe(they do have specific chargers) if earthx uses the same technology they may be worth a shot.
I had a regulator failure a few years ago that literally cooked my lead acid battery(it was still hot an hour later)
I would like to think this new battery's safeguards would have prevented a meltdown.

  11. Dusty added a post in a topic Running AVGAS

ZK KNZ ran avgas exclusively for the first 750 +hrs  with no problems other than a "rotten" exhaust.
i use avgas when on cross country , the only difference is a slightly lower EGT.
sounds like our avgas from 2018 will be lead free, what's happening in other parts of the world?
    what is TCP?

  12. Dusty added a post in a topic 582 Idle Jet

Has it always done this? If not what has changed!
do you have a B or C box, as I believe the B box can get slack internally causing idle issues.
Try a set of leaner idle jets( the 912 #35 jets fit,I get a smooth idle down to 1700 rpm
I am assuming you have checked the usuals such as plugs, wires, etc

  18. Dusty added a post in a topic Fuel Filter Choices

I use the square pump, the magnet gets very small metal "fluff"on it which i dont believe can be coming from anywhere else,it probably wouldnt do any harm but a bigger piece may wear the rotax diaphragm. If you "dissasemble"the facet pump they appear to be metal to metal with the fuel being the lubricant!

I also use the glass filters as they can be visually checked at preflight and replacement elements are available
These filters must be securly mounted on standoffs and not over tightened, they can break!
We also use one with a magnet fitted between the facet and rotax pump,it is surprising how much metal these pumps make.

I dont understand Seabee's? We have to thank america for many of our good sealed strips, unfortunately many  of our strips have been lost to devalopment

  24. Dusty added a post in a topic Bing carb fuel pressure

Apart from the body diameter? the bing appears to be very similar to the 912 carb,so i am assuming 5.8 psi max
The facet low pressure4psi pump is extremely reliable,as a rule on my 582 fox i run the pump when below 1000ft agl as a backup to the mikuni pulse pump,
But my 912 only allows me to use one as a backup as occasionaly the pressure gets above 5.8 psi both aircraft have the pumps in series.
Do a gravity flow test at the carb level in a max climb  attitude 1.5 times your max engine use is a safe gravity flow
