If your brake pedals don't have the 2.5x1 geometry that Matco says you need, then fixing that will make the biggest improvement in braking over anything else you can do.  My 'stock' avid wouldn't hold at 3000RPM, let alone 5000-5500rpm needed for runup.  It had the MC5 cylinders with the built in reservoir.  I tried the augmentation kit that matco sells, which made a marginal improvement - maybe I could hold 3500RPM.  So I bit the bullet, put in MC4G (really short) cylinders, an external reservoir, and built new pedals that gave me the 2.5x1 geometry.  Now I can hold 5500rpm for runup.  Same calipers, lines, etc.

"Mark, you sound like you know a little bit about computers, you want another job   "

I work on the all day long - that is why NO, I don't want another job!!! I get enough of this  :hammerhead:  all day long!  I play with airplanes, woodworking, metalworking, ANYTHING but computers after the work day is done!

    Sorry Leni,

I think we both tried to "open" and it gives a "root missing" or similar error message - NO Can Do!  Not trying to download - don't even kno what that means.  I tried a long time ago and the files would not open for me then either.

Thanks for the tip on the manuals. Unfortunately, they won't open after I download them.  Adobe complains the document root is missing or invalid.  Sigh, it has been that kind of day.

    Mark,

I just tried and it wont open for me either!

Hey guys, I just opened the files on the wifes laptop.  Instead of saving them to your comuter, choose open files... then it opens just fine and you can THEN save the open fie to you comuter.. I don't know why it will open OK but not save right on a direct downoad.

    Mike,

What size brake lines do you run?  I had the 1/8" lines when I was using the MC1 masters.  Would it do me any good to run bigger lines?  I wouldnt think it would really make much difference, as pressure is pressure and once its compressed to XX PSI its not going to matter if I am running bigger lines or not.. but theory and reality sometimes butt heads and if the bigger lines sem to work better I could give it a try pretty quick.

As far as the magnum top end of it's brake system goes, I've only studied it in pictures and from what I can see the brake pedals suffer from some of the same flaws as the smaller avids even though it is completely different in appearance.guys with mc-4d masters and the modified 2 piece pedal are able to make 600 psi, which in an ac setup is about all you want in most cases. But as Leni's current setup with 30 inch airstreaks shows there are limits to what a single piston internal caliper bottomend can do even with maxed psi.To my eye the magnum brke pedal would make 400 ish psi or less stock, with the leverage and flex issues I'm seeing though this is just a guess.Only way to really tell is to plumb a pressure guage onto the top end with the caliper out of the picture.

Sorry guys, my laptop died but I have a copy of the manual on my computer at work... unfortunately, I wont be back at work for 2 more week so I wont be able to re-upload the files till then.  Joey, if you have them downloaded on your computer maybe you can swap the files out.

Mark, you sound like you know a little bit about computers, you want another job   The original files are probly in the data base, but I couldn't tell you how to change extentions etc.. That is above my paygrade and computer skillz.  I just pay people to fix it when the forum goes Tang Uniform...

go fly it off the snow, if there is packed snow or ice on the runway you wont even notice if the gear is out of alignment

A lot of the guys don't seem to mind the narrow gear.  I run big tires so I hated it.  The wide gear makes it a piece of cake on the ground.

    :BC:

No doubt I wouldn't notice the alignment, since every time there is snow or ice around here it comes with 20-30mph winds.  I've joked I really don't need an engine for this plane in the spring here, just a rope to tie it to the flagpole......

Nice looking plane Mark, looks like you have the MKIV cowl as well. looks a lot better than the old A-C cowl that I currently have. do you have any pics of the inside by chance? panel? Having flown a narrow gear Skyraider I would second the motion to just put a wide gear on it and learn to fly the tail dragger the way it was intended rather than put the nose gear on. I think you will be happier in the long run. to put on the nose gear you have to do a bit of welding which would be no problem with the fabric off if you choose this route. FWIW I'm currently working on converting the wide bungee gear from Ridge Runner to fit my Avid. Its just a bit wider/ higher than Brett's gear and it keeps the bungees which I prefer to the springs. Its mostly a direct fit for the main gear just have to fab up my own cabane V which should be pretty easy. good luck with your new bird

Yea, I looked at the downloaded pdf file, and somewhere in the various moves of the forum, they were transferred between systems with FTP using Text mode instead of Binary mode, so the end of line characters go messed up.

Some characters that looked like end of line but weren't got wacked too, so reversing that process doesn't solve the problem.  I'll try to salvage them in my spare time, but if someone has useable copies it will be a lot faster to repost them.

Note - this is not a criticism of the forum in any way shape or form!  Just a statement of what is wrong.   Nobody appreciates more than I do the amount of effort and sacrifice that goes with maintaing/hosting a forum like this!

Lets all hope that this is NOT the end of Pursang - That is a classic, and a historical marker in the evolution of the Avid/Airdale - Ken may be able to repair it again.

Most important are the lives saved by a good pilot in a bad situation!

I put the 30" air streaks on yesterday. With the updated brake pedals and mc4d masters, I can only hold it to 3800 rom on run up. If your going to put on big tires, get double pucks! On landing these single pucks are about as effective as the old cable operated band brakes..

Lets at least keep them distasteful, for Leni's sake.  We have standards to (not) uphold.

This is what he told me that the Feds had decided.  Don't think I am telling any more than they already know.

I have been told what part, and the 2-cycle guys don't have to worry.

    Kenneth,

Glad you are OK - what $3 part?  Do we all need to do an inspections on some part?

Ed - This won't be discussed until the feds are finished with whatever they are doing.  DIscussions on open chat boards are not appropriate.
