My favorite is Sporty's New 400 - Big nav screen for VORs, All channels, weather, memory, etc. 8 AA batteries.
I have the old model, which is almost as good.

it depends.. if they used the 4th (front mount) then you will have to modify it a little bit, but it should work for you. Worst case you will probably have to modify the front strut and make it a little shorter and probably shorten up the N strut. But the rigging should be long enough for you to modify what is there to bolt onto an Avid.

You got me too, here I was feeling all happy for you and now you still have to work.Oh well at least you got some new tires.Randy

Ron,
The article I read was in the May 2014 Kitplanes mag. I don't see where anyone writing the article is making any profit, so I guess it is just an opinion based on his years of experience.
IMO, the most extreme heat the cowl should have would be after shutdown, when no air is blowing. some folks have put an automatic door in the top of the cowl which is regulated by a VW thermobellows from the junkyard or dealer. I don't know that it helps the exhaust areas much.
To try to put it in a nutshell, I will condense what the article says:
Only the parts of the cowl subject to high heat need to be covered, especially those areas closer than 3/4 to 1 inch to exhausts, and definately any area closer than 1/2".
Level 1 - To seal the cowl from oil contamination, paint a coat of fuel-proof laminating epoxy on the inside, and paint with white or silver paint.
Level 2 - Seal with epoxy and apply self-adhesive foil from Spuce or Vans.
Level 3 - Epoxy and 1/16" Fiberfax attached with Pliobond contact cement, and covered with foil about 2 inches wider.
I added this: Level 3.5 - Fiberfax is also available 1/8" thick.
Level 4 - Epoxy and Firewall 2000 - this is 1/4" of insulator sandwiched between stainless foil and aluminum foil.
Hope this helps or gives you an idea or two.

What, everyone missed my joke? I re- tired as is 21" tires on the Avid.
Leni I have had the spring gear on there for over 100 hrs. and really like them, waiting on the Matco TW to finish off the gear.
I should retire but I just like the trucking business and the oil patch to much. Started saying I was semi- retired this year but that was a mistake, just ended up working more. Guess it can't be work if II enjoy it.

I dont see it as being a problem. A lot of planes running big continentals have fiberglass cowls. You should have plenty of air running through there to keep it cool. On snowmachines we use foil tape on the plastic at strategic locations around the exhaust to keep it from melting the plastic.
ChrisB has a magnum he puts some hours on.. did you have any issues with the fiberglass cowling warping due to heat?

It sounds like a good idea Ed, I just wondered if you did the entire cowl if you would actually be baking the engine like a aluminum foiled potato and make the engine temp go up!
Around the exhaust makes sense...

I lost about 30 pounds...all off my gut...the first six months after I retired. I stopped by my old office to say hi to everyone and they all wanted to know how I lost the weight. I just replied, "I'm retired, no time to drink beer".

Love the reg. # They wont let up get away with stuff like that anymore over here.. Used to be able to get about anything we wanted for personalized plates for our cars , trucks.. but now they all go before a review board and they wont let you have anything good like that anymore.
Glad that your able to get around again and get back to flying!

Congrats Paul,
I retired about 23 years ago the first time - unfortunately I was not smart enough or rich enough to quit working -
2nd retirement was 10 years ago, and still had to rebuild another house, a garage, a storage building, and another plane -
someday I may learn to relax!
Good Landings to you,

looking good! I would be scared to put a DB meter in mine.. Funny how everyone OUTSIDE the plane says it is very quiet and that I can sneak up on them, but that is not the case inside the plane as it is pretty loud and when I am making radio calls I get ribbed a lot about the screaming 2 stroke in the back ground. I am sure we can put some sound barrier in the plane to quiet it down, but good sound barrier is pretty heavy, and I want to lighten mine up all I can. For now earplugs and good gel ear seals seem to be working for me.

Congrats! Hopefully in another 20 or 30 years I will have stopped foolishly spending all my money on airplanes and other toys and be able to make the same post!
So we should be seeing a lot more flying and playing pictures from you right??

Hey guys!!
The tank is almost fitted, and the fuel line is routed with the transponder antenna cable with extra protections at some places.
I´m taking the time to do some sound/temp isolation to have less noise inside of the cockpit, I have a sound tester and it´s like 120 db in flight at cruise, I use ear plugs + headsets, I`m trying to minimize cockpit noise. Any of you guys have problems with noisy cockpit?
I will be adding also little compartment right behind the seat and I as said before aileron control rods will have to be disconnect it each time fold the wings. oh almost forgot I bought a flightline FL-760 from a guy who is not flying anymore, almost new for 550$ i´m very happy with size/weight and price, heard nothing but good things about this little Japanese radio, let´s see in the air how it behaves, with intercom built in.

Well;
after a broken ankle, 2 screws and 8 weeks of doing absolutely nothing---Doctor said it was worried about blood clogh and amputation...I´m almost out of danger and ready to work on the workshop slowly... Can´t wait to fly this thing!!!
Now is time to get my @$$ in gear, Sew the sling seat, after tons of hours looking and asking questions in internet I decided that removing the cushion as per Bryce advise, would be the best and easiest MOD.
Turn out my SE-YTA patch will be useless since I will change to another registration number, any ambiguity with the meaning of that word is mere coincidence...cough---cough..ejem @£$$bull£@shit...

Leni, You mean you would take his wings and leave his struts? There was a derelict at Birchwood that probably could be bought for scraps if it is still parked there by the office. If you could find it in the weeds!
EDMO
I wonder if those spars are in two pieces?
I am pretty sure that is the one that Akflyerbob bought a few years ago. The differences in mounting location on the fuse would make the struts not work on a land plane. So I would have to make new ones.
Sealing the firewall?

Ron,
I left out that the guy writing this was a retired aircraft exhaust manufacturer - He also said, "If you wrap the exhaust, You have doomed it to failure, and defeated its purpose as a heat sink."
