    Brake fittings
Before I even attempt to increase the brake pressure by modifying the peddles, I need to be able to keep the fluid in the system!

I have replaced the brass fittings at my calipers and have put thread sealing compound on them and tightened them just shy of the breaking point, yet still I have leaks of fluid. My next move is to replace the lines running down the inside of the gear and their compression fittings (though I don't think they are leaking).

Does anyone have any advise for me? Joey, you just did all of this didn't you? Thoughts or comments are welcome. I don't have any more hair to pull out...

If I hear one more half baked commentary on how all the 912 powered planes are gonna fall out of the sky due to carb ice, I'm going to explode!!

Thanks, I just got her home yesterday and going to give her a full annual before she gets in the air. Theres some cosmetic work, well lots of cosmetic work to do but i probably won't get carried away as she'll be covered in mud most the time where i plan on taking her.

Here's a picture of FBOJ on the trialer right before i tucked her in the garage for some TLC time.

    Ordered my gear today!!
I ordered a set of the new wide spring gear today from Brett at Airdale. It sounds like I am a ways down the list and Brett is swamped so it will prob take a while to get them. The new gear is 10 inches wider and 2 inches taller. I should be able to go with bigger TW now and still have the same aoa. I am pretty excited it's been a while since I did any mods!

Well I tore into the engine and the jury is out till I pull the crank.. there was a lot of clutch dust behind the gear box and the front seal was leaking a little bit. Bottom line is the rod bearing on the crank locked up.

    Hey guys,

Your welcome for the lunch! I was glad to see jack getting back in the air and I hope it will light the fire to get his bird in the air!
You darn sure could not have picked a better day to burn some sky!

    Randy,
Thanks for the ride, It was a great way to see what my Avid+ is going to fly like and the power the subaru engine will provide. It's been quite a while since I've flown and the view out the window is quite a bit different than that from a Citabria. The power you feel in the seat of your pants when the power is applied for takeoff is impressive. That 100hp in an 800lb. plane is quite impressive when you compare it to the 100hp Citabria that weighs in at 1600lbs.
My thanks to Leni and Tina for buying and taking us to lunch, it was great to have the time to visit and catch up on things. The thing that still stands out in my mind about how the Avid+ plus flies, is that when you're cruising along, if you try to fly it, you do worse that if you just keep your feet on the rudders and leave the stick alone. It does a better job flying that if you try to fly it! Talk about stable, it's really impressive! Got the rigging spot on!
Thanks again Randy, the flight was great.

    First Dual Flight
I twisted Jack's arm enough to become my first victim...er...passenger. We had a great fight down to Soldotna and had lunch with Leni and and his girl friend (thanks again Leni). The Avid+ did fine with two of us, 20 Gal of fuel and 50 lbs of gear. I was pleased with the takeoff and handling with the load. It gets off faster than my Avid did under the same load so the added HP and torque make a real difference on that end of the spectrum. With the bushwheels on it and the added flaperon travel I think it helps due to the increased angle of attack as well. Besides, it just looks so good with those bush wheels on it.

Although it would be nice to have the 100 lb weight reduction of a 912 but for about $14K less, I think Jack agrees, the Subie doesn't do half bad.

The day was awsome and we managed to get one gravel bar landing in on the way home.

I reworked my flaperon linkage the other day; installed a shortened TEE link in the Avid+ and increased the full flap deflection fron 16 degrees to 28 degrees. I didn't get a chance to fly it until this weekend after I switched back to wheels. I didn't get any feeling of control reversal with full flaps but I didn't try any full stick deflections while at full flaps. Mine seems to put in some roll component at full flap deflection but it might be due to the fact that I had to offset tthe TEE link slightly and caused the connector links to flaperon L levers (not sure of the name) to be set at different lengths. Not a big deal but just had to compensate with stck or back off on the flaps a little. It does help the fat Avid get off the ground better and land slower.

I know this is exceeding the flaperon travel recommended in the Avid manual so I am not encouragng anyone else to do it; just noting my observations.

The gear for the mark IV is the "tall-wide" gear. Well, that is what I was told anyway

Larry, I see you said Brett is making spring gear now. Would he build a set for the normal Mark IV, instead of the taller wide gear?

WITHOUT A DOUBT pull it down and put new seals in it. Your plane will thank you for it! My plane fired right up after sitting under a tarp for 6 yrs ( it had 121 hrs on it when I got it), but I still put in a new crank, pistons and rings, RV shaft etc. I figured what the hell, I am rebuilding the plane from the ground up, may as well zero time the engine too!

In your case, I would look at the crank bearing real close and make sure there is no rust starting on them. A new seal kit is CHEAP insurance... OK so with any engine there is NO insurance, but it will damn sure stack the deck in your favor!

Well my first engine out didnt go so well, but that was in a pacer on floats and I was climbing out HARD to clear the trees.. when she puked I just kinda rotated around the wingtips and lawn darted in from about 100'. By the time you hit the third engine out, its old hat and you just play the cards your dealt.

Since your back home, go kick the fat bastage builder in the ass and get him motivated!

hahahaha, I have 2 kids getting married this summer and lawyers crawling up my ass... the chances of spending money on a 912 are about as good as me waking up and finding a turbine sherpa in the front yard with a big ole bow wrapped around it and a nice note from Santa telling me merry Christmas!

I have 172 hrs over the last 2 yrs on it... Alot less than I should have had on it, but the summer was real crappy last year. I normally get in 250-300 hrs on floats buts the shitty weather kept me down to 43 hrs.. worst year I can remember for float time!

172 trouble free hours... Will get it torn down tonight and see what went wrong. I really dont think it is too catastrophic cause I pulled the exhaust manifold and the cylinders look pretty damn good. No sign of a hard seize and the top of the piston looks good. There are a couple scratches on the back side of the cylinder wall that are leading me to think that I caught a ring on the intake port and broke it. I will know for certain here pretty quick!

    Old bird, older engine...
The bird is coming home this week. Either by trailer or by air. It hasn't flown for a couple years and only put probably 10 hours on it in the past 8 years.

It has the older 582 grey head in it and i'm wondering if i shouldn't by all new seals for it and put them in or if i should run it up and see where the EGT temps are sitting and such and keep an eye out for leaks.

I haven't owned a 582 or any aircraft 2 stroke before and wondering how much trouble i might be getting in to. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Glad to hear that you were able to make a good landing, one you could walk away from, and I will even give you an excellent because even though you couldn't fly the plane away it was beyond your control. Seriously though how many hours did you have on the engine? Hopefully you will be able to get fixed and back in the air soon, its been two months since I could afford to spare money to rent a plane and I am already jonseing.

    Hey Guys,

I'm curious as to the thickness of Lexan I'll need to replace the windshield once i get my avid mark IV home next week. Also is there any special tricks and tips so i'm not making a second order for more lexan?

    Thanks

  25. Trackwelder added a post in a topic Pilot side fuel tank

I had a fiberglass tank on the passenger side of the plane and am leaving that, but I was not entirely comfortable with just one tank on the plane, looking at the price of 100LL around here versus mogas, it is about $1.25 cheaper and since I think these will be extra fuel instead of really required range I think the wingtanks should do the job. I welcome any information on the instalation of these wingtanks, I made my decision and right or wrong I am going to stick with them, I just want to make sure that I install them with the least chance of leakage possible slow fill I can live with, leaks I would rather not deal with.
