Thanks, I'll watch that. Do you know if there is a way to put a manifold preassure guage on these?

You have the Subaru, but I thought I'd mention this anyway.

A friend running a controllable ivo with a 912 had some issues with high pitch full throttle for high cruise speeds. This caused too much cylinder pressure and caused leaking at the bases and heads. Leaking stopped when he gave himself a minimum rpm at full throttle of 5200. You may want to watch your head gaskets if you do this often.

    Just FYI.

Well I finally got the IVO set up completed and did my run/torq sequence and put 3 hours on it today. I must say it makes a pretty impressive change in my plane. First off the stick controls and the poly switch set up with the LED indicator lights at the limits worked perfect. The REH450 polyswitches seem to be just right. As the motor slows down to almost stopped, the poly switch trips, the LED blinks and it resets almost immediately. Thanks Chris for that wiring diagram

The IVO prop is great; I can get about 600 more RPM on takeoff at flat pitch which makes quite an improvement on takeoff. It is hard to say how much because the snow conditions were heavy, soft snow at 40+ degrees so the conditions were so different it is hard to quantify. But the amazing thing is the cruise performance. My plane used to struggle to get just a smidge above 80 mph cruise; now it looks like my cruise is around 93+mph. I spent a lot of time breaking 100 mph today; I sure didn't see that unless I had a strong tail wind before. It's burning around 5 gph at 93+mph cruise at 3800 rpm vs 3.5 to 4 gph at 80mph at 3800 rpm but I can still back off to economy cruise if I want to. It is a pretty amazing difference; I am impressed.

Now after driving 850 miles today I'm the owner of a 912 for the Avid. Now I need to find a mount.

Dunno. I haven't called the dealer yet, been too busy with work related priorities at quarter end. I do know the question of purchasing new wings was brought up by the prior owner and the dealer seemed less than enthusiastic about it as he would rather have the container filled with a complete, new high profit-margin SLSA. Apparently they are selling all they can import and are weeks into the waiting list. What recession, huh? In any event, a handful of parts such as ribs and drag tubes take up a whole lot less space so I am hopeful on that. If the dealer says no, I still have the option of going direct to the manufacturer and buying parts from their kit vs. SLSA division, or making my own.

Are you going to have their support for parts at all?

Sounds good, I don't know if they have gas at Shell lake but I can bring 10 g with me in bags. If you need more I know they have it at Skwentna Roadhouse but kind of spendy $7 /gal.
Hope for good weather and no big meltdown I think I might try to borrow a buddy's bobcat to clear the snow berm at the gate to the lake just in case the snow beside the RW melts too much. I had to straddle a few bare patches of asphalt on the taxiway to get out last weekend and I am sure I will have to start trailering the plane to the snow or lake after this week of warmer weather.

Maybe not that difficult to go SLSA --> ELSA with the right papers, but impossible to go back to SLSA with out approval from the manufacturer... which ain't ever gonna happen.

I would never argue the "old" 912 mount is not a total pain in the a$$.

I haven't seen the mods made to the new mount in detail, but I have seen the one that Dave was prototyping. Much improved...

That is fantastic news. very nice to know. My information is a year old. Many thanks for the update!

Was only trying to describe what we encountered so there would be no surprises. No suggesting not to do it. IMHO it is the best option for the Avid if it is a model that can tolerate the weight increase without destroying the useful load.

Two of my friends are currently running the 912 in their MKIVs. One is stretched and pretty heavy because that's the way he built it, not the way it has to be. His is 670Lb. The other is not stretched and he took care to keep it light. His is 630LB. Not a bad tradeoff for the 595 it was with the 582!

I understand the difficulties the mount has had.

Recently a local builder and excellent fabricator modified his mount and Brett was part of this. I think he has since modified the jig to incorporate these changes and updates.

    Nice pics Randy!

To add a caption to your pictures, when you upload them, you should see them appear in a little box off to the side with the file name. Click the little box that says add to post. You will then see the text string with the photo name appear in the reply window. Hit enter so the cursor drops below the text string and you can then put your caption under the photo. I will see if I can do a little tutorial on it with screen shots.

    HP,

Nothing is more fun than Ski flying... right up to the point that you get stuck in overflow, then it is the most miserable nightmare you can imagine! I have done it in the Avid before and it's not too bad, but I had one instance where I was in the 180 solo and got stuck. I made up some really colorful words that I am cvertain had never been uttered before in the history of man! Atleast they had never before been strung together like that! If you are going to be out solo flying ski's you need a good rope and tackle set up that you can pull yourself out with should the need arrise. WEll, that or just stay on the full lotus floats all year around so you never have to worry about overflow or thin ice again!

I should also add that it is possible to use the mount pretty much as-is if you mount the 912 carbs out instead of in. one friend has his this way, but it is far less than optimal in that the top cowl needs to have bumps put in it to clear the carbs and ocassionally on shutdown a carb has been known to shake out of its socket.

If the carbs are mounted inboard as they should be, the install is very clean and the carbs will never shake off and no cowl mods are necessary to clear the carbs.

Not exactly sure how to try and explain this, but here goes. If you imagine the 912 engine mount on two planes, one plane the firewall and the other plane the ring that has the rubber motor mounts on it, the two planes are about 5 inches apart. Between these two planes are pieces of straight tubing that connect them together. One of these pieces of tubing on the mount Brett makes is larger diameter for what appears to be no aparent reason. That is until you try to mount the motor. Then that piece of tubing interfers with one of the intake manifolds. That is when you realize the reason this particular piece of tubing is larger diameter because it is supposed to be bent and needs to be larger to maintain strength. We suspect brett inherited the fixturing that shows what tubes connect where and what the tubing diameters are supposed to be, but somehow the information about required bends in the tubing got lost somewhere in one of the many ownership transfers. My friends Max and Jeromie had conversations with Brett, but communicating how the mount needed to be made was difficult over the long distance. Anyway, If you buy the mount, expect to have to cut some tubing out and bend up and re-weld a couple spots to make everything fit correctly. Still the slightly wrong mount is far easier to modify than trying to make one from scratch.

By the way, WELL worth the effort! The 912 powered Avid absolutely rocks.

Leni, are you back flying? A buddy invited me to a mixed plane fly-in/ burger burn at a place on Shell Lake on the weekend after this one; the 7th of April. Can you make it? We could stop by the lodge and say hi too.

    Winter Flying/Iditarod Pics
Thought I would post a few pics of this winter flying. Wish I knew how to label them. A couple are of the Iditarod; it is amazing to see dog sled after dog sled heading up the river almost like a train with some space between the cars. Snow was plently deep as you can see by where my plane tail is sitting.. and that is with the tail ski on. Another pic is of an open lead in the Big Su River at -25 degrees; almost looks like smoke. A few are from last weekend, a beautiful evening. I can't resist taking pictures of my baby with a good backdrop. Nice sunset behind the Alaska Range

    Racers along the river

Snow be deep! This is with a tail ski!!

Open lead at -25 makes it look like "smoooooke on the water"

    Ed,

Not ready to sell the Warp Drive yet. It might just sit around the hangar and collect dust as my emergency backup prop...hopefully never to be needed.

    Herman,

I have the Ray Allen stick grips with 4 buttons on top and the PTT in the front. The poly switches I installed are teh RHE450's that Chris recommended we start with. I have not connected the prop up yet so have just checked to make sure the circuit was working correctly by tripping he relays and changing the polarity in the brush leads. I thought I had a copy of my wiring diagram at home but will have to get it from the Hangar this weekend and will post it then.
