On my mod 1 Fox the windshield/skylight overlaps the
root rib when the wings are out.
If the root rib had two cap strips the fus rib would
also have to have two cap strips to raise the skylight.

Joey yes I would like to know how to do it. Thanks, Bryce

Educated guess: 175 # with mount, accessories and all fluids.

80 and 100 hp will be about the same (within 5#), 115 hp 914 will be a little more, maybe 190#.

Your finished fabric will lay better and look better if you use the same size tubes.
However, my forward tubes are larger than the original, and I can live with the mismatch because I wanted more strength in the landing gear area - mine is not stretched, just was damaged.

    912 FWF WEIGHT?
It was posted that the FWF weight of a 582 complete is about 153 lbs. I asked at that post about the FWF weight of the 912, but never got an answer. Can anyone give a guestimate including all components?

    WING FOLD CLEARENCE?
    Doug,
IN SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS EARLIER - Regarding adding capstrips to clear the wing tank - You said that adding too much at the rear would cause "wing fold interference" - can you explain this?
I thought that when the wings were folded, the root rib capstrip just butted against the rear crossover tube. I have seen where a notch was cut in the capstrip to complete folding - but nothing on the height or thickness of the capstrip interferring. Have I missed something?

It is the back tube !! Oh crap. Now what. I have been working on this for almost 2 days now in my head... and sleep. I have a builder in the neighborhood that I am going to visit tonight and see if he will come up to my place and have a look see. Just want it to be safe. Not really enough room to make a proper sleeve or capped repair per the manual. I will look into putting a gusset of sorts in there to beef it up. I am ready to paint....all but this. The thing that gets me now is how many of these things were / are being shipped out from out there with no remorse or warning? Guess it is like the wife says....it is what it is..... Fix it or scrap it. Glad it was not powder coated....that would have hidden a multitude of sins. Thanks for the replies...I need some food for thought.
Akflyerbob I did not get to see the pic you have there.....

    Thanks again for the explanation,
I had totally overlooked what should have been the obvious.
I can see the improvement in your setup.

I have noticed that. 99% of the time, the issue is with plug gap. My plugs dont need to be cleaned but regapping them solves the hard starting. The ducatti ignition really does not like much over .016" for a plug gap. .018" max.

Joey is right, toss the mechanical tach and use a tiny tach. The rotax tach seems to be inline with the dream-o-meter speedometers that Skidoo uses The only ones who dream bigger than skidoo are yamahahahahaha.

Make sure you wrapp the lead for the tiny tach around both spark plug wire to one cylinder so you will be able to check the mag drop from one to the other.

Even a 582 powered plane would benifit from a stretch. I have 8# on the tail spring of mine to get the CG in the middle of the range. With the stretch, you can also put in a larger extended baggage for those long items like rifles, fishing poles etc. The only problem there is getting them through the door and around the corner! Been there done that.

I did multiple tests when I had to replace the rib tails on mine. Hysol. T-88, wood glue, 30 minute hobby epoxy and gorilla glue. The gorilla glue won hands down. I used the gorilla glut to put the new rib tails and cap strips on my plane. 3 yrs and 300 hrs later they are holding up just fine.

What you are talking about doing to build up the rib profile is in no way structural, only cosmetic. You could super glue the second cap strip on and be fine.

Ed if you look at the very front of this thread you will see a pic of the prototypes in my plane.the brake bedals on the avid and most of the kitfoxes are of made in an open ended tubing configuration and insert thru the rudder pedal portion of the rudder bar.Now on the avid this openendedness was detering peformance so I designed a brake pedal that looks like the original but plugs the openends shut with a bridge to give an as welded rigidity to the pedal and give around a 50% boost in top end line psi over an original openended pedal.

There might be a consern if it were the rear mount
I have a picture of a gusset being welded under the
rear fus attachment because some have cracked/broken
because of trailering without the wing support.
I think Snapp sent me the pic

If you are out of 9460, I would at least go with some kind of epoxy - not familiar with G glue. T-88 is good.
But, for blending the ends, 9460 with some flox is best, IMO.

    Thanks Mike,
Since I am a long-time Kitfox builder, and know very little about Avids, can you tell me about the 2 piece brake pedals you are referring to - I may have seen them in the photos, but that tells me little.
My Kitfoxes have all had what I thought was 2 piece pedals - a welded double upright, and 2 pivoting foot pedals, and another set of the same. The KF5 had a totally different setup.
So, where am I missing the message here?

The best way to accomplish this would be to get together with Brett at Airdale. He has a jig to accomplish this while keeping the alignment correct. This mod is usually done with MIG welding (the same as the original manufacture).

just click on "Browse" just below the typing field when adding a post then select what you want to add click "attach this file" and your good to go. Most pics need to be reduced I usually use 25% then you can view them in sizes like Joey has these.

Joey, Thanks for the pics, they keep me motivated can't wait to get back into the air.

[Edit] Darn Joey you beat me by 1 minute.

Sent you an email to the address you have listed on your profile. Let me know if you got it.

Would other people be interested in doing the pictures in the post rather than attachments if I posted a tutorial on how to do it? All you need is a photobucket account which is free. I've had one for years and have thousands of pictures hosted there and have never ran out of space. It's only a few more clicks of work to do.

Ed: The w62 was the wheel and brake system the early avids up to and including the mk4 came with. the setup didn't work with crap and of course most everyone falsely pointed the finger at matco's bottom end components. The real culprit was a haphazard toe brake setup that couldn't produce the line psi the system needed. The mc4d is the off the shelf best choice for the avid. You can put as much leverage as you want into a brakeing system, if the mechanics are defecient the line psi doesn't happen. The reason I developed the 2 piece brake pedals.Leni Joey and myself are all running w62 brake bottom ends mc4d's and 2 piece brake pedals.Stopping performance is very strong.

These tanks seem to fit the twist perfectly they sit real nice on the spars just seem to be a bit to high, I guess they thought I needed that tad bit more fuel anyways, I picked up some nice plywood from a fancy woodworking cabinet shop today and will just raise them up to match the tanks, I don't think I can go above the tanks to make it look like they are not even in there as these are the new flush fill tanks ie: no fill neck sticking up so I have to stay flush with them. shouldn't be a problem also it gives me the opportunity to raise the butt ribs and gain a little more head room. I'm thinking Gorilla glue should work fine to attach the new strips any thoughts of this?
