You could shape the foam, put on a layer of 1/64th" aircraft ply (we use it for skinning wings on model aircraft) then glass over that. The foam could dissolve and go away for all you really care after the ply and glass, although, the foam would give it some extra crush protection.

I am going to be rebuilding my first MK IV soon (hopefully) and I'm thinking I will add this extention also. I already have the aluminum on the top of the wing where the false ribs are, so the aluminum wont have to be as wide as this drawing shows. Being as how most Avids are nose heavy, and I'll have a Jabiru on the nose, I think it will help the CG just a bit as well. It does add a bit of wing area too (about 3 square feet) and I think that can't hurt either. An idea I'm kicking around would be to build the leading edge with foam that is glued to the front spar and then sanded to the profile you want. Once it's shaped then lay fiberglass over the foam to give it some extra strength. If regular building foam is used, the resin in the fiberglass will have to be a kind that wont disolve the foam. Also it would need to be sealed from covering chemicals that would disolve the foam also. Take care, Jim Chuk

Not sure, but I just looked at Leading Edge's price from about 5 years ago, and the set was $520. OUCH! I think when people say make an offer, they maybe still kindof have an idea what they might want. Maybe the guy in New Zealand will come up with a price himself if pressed on the issue. The other thing you could do is run a wanted add on Barnstormers. A call to Steve Beaty at Airscrew Performance might get you a set also, but when I talked to him a few years ago about this, he said the 2.62s were harder to find than the 3-1 sets. Take care, Jim Chuk

    Jim,

This is how my plane was done. It seems to work well and it was taken a whack from a few branches and survived!

Great price for that set! I'd be calling if I hadn't already got mine.

Where are you going to get the blocks for $29? Grove wants $400 for a Kitfox IV. (Kitfox blocks do not fit the Avid gear mount tabs unless you do some serious modifications.)

Plus, the Avid gear spring is bent such that the wheels are forward from the mounts. Kitfox gear are straight. Not an easy interchange.

The Kitfox is 32 inches across - the Avid is 31 1/2. The 32 should fit either.
Those mounts sur have gone up in price - I only need the clamp blocks to finish my set, and they are $29 each - need 2 if I cant find mine.
Mine has the hole in the middle. and it is gun-drilled for the brake lines to go inside the spring.
I see some small differences between the Avid B,C & Mk4 and the Kitfox 1,2,3,4, but not enough to say they wont interchange.
The tri-gears are shorter than the TDs, but I am using the taller TD on my tri. Just got to step a little higher, and it raises the prop 6 inches more.
I am useing a KF7 gear on my project, and Robby Grove told me it wouldnt matter if the radius blocks are mounted 3 to 4 inches closer together than on the 7.
I am asking $1100 for my KF4 TD gear with almost new Matco wheels and brakes, plus shipping.

Mine is pretty heavy due to the Subaru, extended heavy duty landing gear, probably too much paint, and my own inexperience as a first time builder, so it weighs 830 lbs. Plus I seem to always have a lot of gear in it, especially in the winter with 60lb of survival gear, a jumper battery, stove/ preheater, snowshoes, shovel, etc, plus whatever else I am carrying with me for the intended trip.... I don't really pay much attention to my landing speed much but I generally am 50 mph over the fence and 40 mph on touchdown.

    Ivo prop constant speed
    Hello Forum
I have been very pleased with my IVO inflight adjustable prop on my 582 powered Kitfox.
I was considering the IVO constant speed option which costs $320. that electrically controls the prop speed.
Has any one had experience with this device?
Since 2 strokes easily change RPM with slight pitch changes I feel a constant speed would be great.
    Thanks Herman

I think I'll let my Boing R&D team work on the LI battery issue for little while longer before I put one in my plane. :hammerhead:src="http://www.avidfoxflyers.com/public/style_emoticons/default/hammerhead.gif">

I have a drawing that shows a way to make a leading edge extention I will post here. It was drawn by Lee Dubay, who worked with Avid early on as a dealer. He did come up with a few nice ideas relating to the Avids. Take care, Jim Chuk

Per their website, Grove makes gear model that fit the III and IV, then a different model that fits the V through VII. Link

The dimensions they give show it to be 31.5" wide on the top for the smaller spring. They don't say it fits, but I would assume that this is the one you had on your 2. Ed, does your gear have the 'rolled pins' in the trailing edge to locate them or does it have a hole drilled in the middle of the spring?

I just ordered a set of mounting blocks for a IV from Grove and they were $400. I have a used spring I bought from a friend, the mounts, axles and wheel/brake assembly are quoted at $1550. A new IV spring with the mounts is $1680. Avids use a different spring altogether. They have different geometry to them.

Bryce, I was just looking on Barnstormers, and saw a new set of 2.62 gears for sale. He says make an offer. Only problem is they are in New Zealand.... They probably weigh less than 2 lbs, so shipping shouldn't be to bad. Also, there was a new E box with 2.62 gears in it for $1500. A bit steep just to do some experimenting, but then who ever said anything about aviation was cheap? Take care, Jim Chuk

    Joe,
I will go out and measure tomorrow - believe my KF2 is 32 inches across bottom - I have the blocks that attach to the regular gear ears, but may or may not have the 2 clamp blocks that match. These can be bought from Grove if I cant find mine, and dont cost much. It should fit Kitfoxes including the 1 thru 4. I dont know about the later ones, but think they are same width on bottom?

Don't you just love that? Winter flying is the best. Ron don't worry about the ice cracking, that is a good sign. When you hear it cracking, it is making ice. Try fishing Lake Of The Woods in northern Mn. It will shake your whole shack when its making ice there.

What model Kitfox does this gear fit?
What is the width dimension across the top from radius to radius?

    AK,

The thing I requested the review from was not Google or Mozilla. I'd have to look up who it was, but they appeared to be the origin of it. When I told Firefox to ignore the warning, their site opened in a new tab. I think a couple online scans I ran to check this site for badware did not find any on the site but said they found that Google and I believe this other place I was at reported that they had detected and was reporting it as badware.

stopbadware.org was the place I went)

Anyway, I agree, what ever cleared it, I'm glad it's gone.
