    582 been sitting
    Guys,

I have a grey head 582 that has been sitting un-used for about three years.  It was fogged and tapped up well prior to storage.  What should I be doing and looking for prior to putting it back in service?  about 110 tt on engine
    thanks,

    Hey Randy,
Good idea! Being from the South, I've never had that experience! But if I did, those skis would have been covered in the Handyman's Secret Weapon, Duck TapeðŸ‘! You might get more uses per application. Thank you Red Green for demonstrating the magic of Duck Tape! Bryce

Jim, that is correct.  In addition the bottom longeron was bent ahead of the gear attachment fitting.  Also as I mentioned the top member of the cabane cross member buckled.  I am not sure if this happen in the ground loop or if it happened in a slight bounced land.  The good news is that it stayed on its gear due to the wider stance and did not get the wing.  I am 2 for 2 on the ground loops/ fuselage damage and now thinking about the tri gear.  I will do some fuselage beefing this time to take care of the weak points in the gear and the fuselage.  I have a picture of the damage to the gear now and is attached.  The other pictures will follow.

I think that the spring on the gear is to strong for the weight of the plane.  This is the gear sold by Highwing LLC but I think that the Airdale gear uses the same spring.

As you can see the cross member could benefit IMHO from a brace going from the top center to the center of the vee and also a heavier top tube making this a much stronger truss.

Putting aside the stupidity of not wearing seat belts, and the probability that the PIC instructor will be sued, Does this canopy open from the front or rear?  Think they were stupid enough to get inverted?

A leaking (overflowing) rotary valve reservoir isn't normal and I wouldn't settle for this.  Maybe you can finish up your engine testing to see if there are any other gremlins, but if it were me, I'd address the issue.

    Emergency Ski Bottoms
A little trick Leni taught me today.  Temps warmed up above freezing today with some rain to boot.  Jeff's skis are an old set of Federal 1500's; very small and all aluminum with no plastic bottoms.  I landed on Big Lake today to see how my Son-in-law was doing fishing.  It was about all I could do to keep it from nosing over and took full power to taxi as the skis cut trenches.  Once I stopped the bottoms of the skis were glued to the snow.  After much effort to pack a starting track and get the ski bottoms cleaned and sliding I was able to get it moving and taxied at full throttle until I got to an ice roade to take off.  At the Lodge it was the same thing again but this time we bagged the skis with garbage bags under them and taped on; it was an amazing difference, but only good for about one landing on a slushy gravel runway.

Not ready to get rid of my Stratus EA81 and I think a turbo on it would bring additional cooling requirements as well and a lot of work to fit it in there and plumb to the dual carbs.  No thanks; I spent a lot of time putting this one together and am not ready to start any new long term project that takes my flying plane out of service.  I don't think I will be putting NO2 on any time soon either but it would be fun to have a test bed plane.  I think the factory SQ2 with the 220 hp Lycoming is running NO2... but they probably had the setup done on a dyno, and could well have it electronically controled as well.  Fun to think about though...

Seems like Eggenfeller really burned their customers with PSRU failures that they didn't warranty and just left them unsupported.  I know of two guys in the EAA up here who bought Eggenfeller motors but swapped them out before the first fligt; did not to even fly them.  They ate the whole cost, ouch!

    Doug,

Those look really nice but I think they need to be tested before you use them.  If you want to send them up here I will fly the first 40 hours off of them for you.

Wow, that is a strange one.  Why were they not wearing seat belts and I thought those had a flip up canopy?  How did that get open?

Hi Paul, sorry about your plane. Are you saying that the bottom tube on the seat truss buckled? I'm also interested in this cause I have all the tubing bought to build the bush gear myself.

Man ejected from plane... and no it wasn't a fighter
Holy CRAP!! Lots of questions to be answered on this one!!

BRADLEY COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) -- The search continues for a student pilot, who was ejected from a small plane without a parachute.

The missing pilot's instructor managed to land the single engine plane safely, after the aircraft went into a nose dive.

On the ground and in the air, the search continues for the pilot who authorities say fell some 2,500 feet from a two-seater plane.

"The people inside the plane were not wearing seat belts," EMA director, Troy Spence says. "So when they lost control of the plane, in an attempt to regain control of the plane, the passenger was ejected."

The co-pilot was taking lessons from a more-experienced pilot when the plane took a nose dive.

"Had some kind of malfunction with the plane and had a rapid decent," says Spence.

The instructor was able to gain control and safely land at the Collegedale Municipal Airport, about eight miles from where his co-pilot likely fell.

Now Bradley County search teams are focused on the area near Weatherly Switch Road.

"Due to GPS coordinates and pinging of the cell phone, this incident is in Bradley County," Collegedale officer Melvin Taylor says. "Those emergency personnel are on the ground looking for the party."

As the search continues, Channel 3 is learning more about the plane.

According to flight aware records, the Zodiac 601 belonged to 82-year-old Clarence Andrews, who built it.

Andrews died last December in a plane crash not far from the Collegedale airport.

His family sold the aircraft to the student pilot earlier this month.

    Some more on it

Leni, I have the new spring gear and the bent fuselage.  I was wondering if you have any progress on your idea for a fix.  I have the fabric pulled away and can get a good picture of the damages tomorrow.  I had hoped that the cabine vee would help carry the load but the side to side bar, top of the vee buckled allowing the side of the lower fuselage tube to buckle inward.

I think I have already said I dont like Eggenfeldner engineering, and I dont think they even make an EA-81 now.  All the later models are too heavy for our planes.  There are other turbo EA-81's available, or were?

unfortunately i have to go on the road for a few days.  wont be back until April 14th.  Oh and the oil leak is in the rotary valve.  Rotax Rick told me it would be no issue, in-fact it is lubicrating the cage bearings better.  I just have to top off the oil bath resovoir every couple flights

    Randy,
Thanks for sharing.  That is exatly what I was looking for.  My spot has been very spotty recently, and this looks to be a much better alternative.  One of these days I 'm going to have to get over to the EAA meeting.

If you're thinking the Eggenfellner motor, good luck.

    Randy,
I havent figured out how to copy your post for my reply on this new site - Your post above wondering if your fuel pump pressure would work -  I checked out one of the sites for injector systems, and it read like your pump pressure would work, BUT, it seemed to indicate that the volume (gph) requirement was very high, so guess this could be critical too, like the line size and other things.
Too much specialized engineering required on this for me to figure out.
I would think for the risks it would involve, I would just convert to the 4 cyl Turbo Honda which weighs only about 10 pounds more than the Soob, and gives 140 horses, and sell the Stratus while it is still in one piece, or find a turbo EA-81 with 125 hp.........either one is cheaper than a 912.

In a failure situation, the egts will spike so quickly it is doubtful that you would have time to react even if you were staring at the gauge. This is why the most successful installations are on fully electronic controlled motors.

Think about this process in terms of a oxy-acetylene cutting torch head. Very similar.

    Ed,

Thanks for the help.  I think I found the correct alternator replacement for the one I am running (from RAM).  It is from a 1995 Suzuki Samari; I just picked a new reman'd one up yesterday; just have to pull mine off and make sure they are an exact match.  Then switch pullys to my expensive aluminum serpentine one and get it bolted on.  Normally would do that today but just might have to forgo it and fly Jeff's plane out to the Lodge to meeet Leni for the crawfish boil....
