If my 582 went to full throttle, my KF-3 would still be in my garage instead of the parts bin!

So if the reason is safety, that is that Rotax feels a full throttle failure is safer that an idle failure, why does the 582 have idle return springs instead of full throttle springs?

Good point on the full throttle AV8, saw your post after I posted above.

If you look at the picture that I posted of the cabane failure you can see that the cross tube failed and deflected downward.  I think the simple added tube may have stopped the fuselage damage but without actual testing there is not a way to tell.  One thing for sure the cabane, which is a truss, would be stronger.  I am sure that infilling the seat truss would have been more important is limiting the damage to my fuselage and that is in the works.

I have added the neutralizer spring to mine and would be interested in why you think that this is a bad idea.  My setup allows the carb springs to still maintain slight pull.  By the way AV8r3400 I didn't catch your first name.

I don't think that the engine would run good with 2 cylinders on one side doing the work.  My thought is to do what several others have done and buy the pricey split cable that ACS sells.  Others might sell this as well.

I have the Jabiru 3300 on my Q-2 and the spring was removed so it works as a push/pull setup.  The throttle throw is very short and the movement of the throttle is short also, about an inch or so.  This could be increased but haven't seen a need to do so.  It now has over 600 hours and works great.  It has the standard friction aircraft cable.

Dang, I talked myself into ordering one today.

Doug I don't know why the Rotax and Jabiru are setup that way.  At least with the Jabiru it is a single carb so it won't shake the engine off the front of the airplane.  I wonder if Bing may require it or maybe the lawyers had a hand in it as was mentioned already.

I've never tried. Hopefully never will, either.

I would rather have an engine that runs at high power and gets worse as you pull power back, than an engine that idles fine but cannot make flight sustaining power...

Some where today I noticed that a Kitfox or Avid was back flying again after an incident in which a carb cable broke and that carb going to full throttle apparently did not help preventing damage to the airframe
The Bing on the Jabiru I flew for a year also had the spring set up to go full throttle if the cable failed but it only had one carb.
How does a 912 run when one carb is full idle or full throttle and the other one is still controlable with throttle?

This is how I see it.  If you tied a long rope tight between two objects on the ground, and then pulled up on the rope, you can get an awful lot of pull on the rope.  It acts like a lever.  The cabane V acts the same way.  When the landing gear deflects in a hard landing, that pulls pretty hard on the bottom of the V.  The crosstube acts to keep the V from pulling the sides of the fuselage in.  If the crosstube had a verticle between it and the V it would have made the crosstube that much less likley to buckle under the load.  My thinking is that if you also tied it to the seat truss, you then gain all the strength from the seat truss also.  If the seat truss is infilled, it's pretty strong in its self.  I'm inclined to think that if you tied the V to the seat truss, you wouldn't even need the cross tube.  Not that it would hurt anything, but I think the seat truss is far stronger than the cross tube.  Good topic for discussion.  Jim

I'm a little fuzzy on how the additional vertical member will help (per the sketch).

I ordered some stol speed vg's and I think I'm going to order strut speed cuffs and a gas cap fairing. Perhaps I can give my top speed a lil bump up and it gives me something to look forward to when I get off the road.

    Bush gear bending fuselage problems
Sorry guys for the way we (maybe should say I) hijacked the other thread with the discussion about bending up the bush gear and such.  Paul,  I haven't ordered springs yet, thanks for that source.  It is a good bit cheaper than the Mc Master Carr prices.  I've been wondering about using multiple wraps of 3/8" bungee instead of springs. Of course the springs compress and bungee stretches so the legs going to the cabane would have to act just the oposite of what they do with the spring system.  With the bungees, it would be lighter, more adjustable (more wraps)  possible longer travel too.  That's what I'm thinking might be some of the advantages.  I could be all wrong on this though.  I know more knowledgeable people than me have designed the gear with springs for good reason.  Of course Cubs and such used bungees for how long also.   It would be nice to get some others into this discussion for a more rounded out pool of knowledge.   I think it would also be helpful if others who have had trouble with their bush gear would give some imput as well.  Take care,  Jim Chuk

    Hi Larry,
I'm using a 10 or 12 amp agm type battery. It has to have a battery tender on it in the winter or it has to be jumped. Summer time is fine. I think it's 10 lbs. I put it in the tail like yours, and I add 10 lbs , so ill go with the lawnmower battery and save my $ when this one dies. Bryce

Not sure I know how on this new site - But going to try to post photos of my C-150 pedals - They are 5 inches wide and 6 inches high, but could be shortened an inch either or both ways.   They are much lighter than the E-tubes.

That is the exact reason, Chris.

If the fail was to close, that would mean and engine out crash every time a throttle cable failed.  Fail to open would mean a difficult landing, but one where power is available thus more survivable.  Liability.  Lawyers have a lot of power.  This is the same reason there are Bing carbs used instead of Mikuni carbs.  This is also the same reason it took Rotax several decades to finally market a fuel injection system.

I know people who have put second springs on the arm to "neutralize" the return.  This is not smart IMO.  That makes your throttle cable a push-pull system.  Not good.

Certificated engines do not have a throttle return spring to either direction.  Their carburetors and controls are, as you know, a far different design, though.

    That's awesome, Chris.

My yellow Kitfox was also registered E-LSA during the transition period.  I have the "inspectors certificate" for it, too.

    Min battery 582
What is the minimum battery requirements for the 582. I know what the books says, but I wonder if you could use lighter than 18ah? I would like to save some weight from the 18ah/15# battery.

    Thanks

    The new me
    Hi all,

I had some email and sign in problems for a while, but I'm back. I noticed that I now have 3 sign in names, can't remember them all without leaving this message. I think it was larrym, larr, and ?.

Anyway, they are all me. larry martin, I owned an Avid MK1V, used to be on Grove, now on Bretts bush gear. I had the tail brake in Aug 12, and finally within range of flying in a month or so!

IDK if the administrator want to combine and delete all my names, or just leave it be?

    Please advise.

If anyone emailed me, I did not get them, and would ask if you need a response from me to please try again.

    Thanks,
    larry

Jim I see what you are talking about. Maybe a plate coming down from the seat truss that could bolt to the cross member on the cabane. I am going to do some infilling of the seat truss and also in the small triangle on the bottom just ahead of the gear attachment point where mine bent and kinked.

Have you purchased springs for your gear yet? If so did you get the springs that were mentioned in the Yahoo Group file from McMaster-Carr. My gear came with a stronger yellow spring(Die springs are color coded) and I am thinking that it may be a little to much spring. I did find the red spring at a better price here:

    http://www.springsfast.com/part_detail_die.php?part=3193

Also I talked to Mark at Highwing LLC about the added king post in the cabane that we have been talking about. He is going to talk to Lowell, his partner but thought that it would be a good idea.

I think that Joey remove his bush gear but I am not sure. Maybe he would comment about his experience.

We have hijacked this thread, maybe we need to start another thread so the subject can be search easier.

Iv'e not considered NOT wearing a seat belt before, I'm a bit nervious about just using the original shoulder belt that came with my kit and am planing to change it to a four point. Should be interesting to see the findings of this incident.

    912 Carb Balance
Can someone tell me why Rotax chose to set up the 912 carbs the way they do? My prior experience with carb balancing was with the 582. Very simple to balance, the procedures make sense, and the carbs stay in balance.

Now I have this 912. Not flying it yet, but have helped a few freinds balance their carbs and what a PITA that is! Now I have one myself I am wondering if anyone can give me a good reason why not to set the carbs up to spring shut like the 582 and have the idle balance be set on the idle stops instead of on tensioned cables? What a mess the tension open scenario produces, and how easily they can get out of sync!

Has anyone converted a 912 to spring close and cable tension to open instead of the standard spring open and cable tension to close?

I figure the engineers who designed the engine know a LOT more than I do, but for the life of me I can't make any sense of why they would do it this way.

I have heard that it fails full throttle instead of idle. OK great. But If that is the only reason, I'd rather have it fail closed throttle.

What do I not understand here?

    Thanks!

Yes. The builder got it certificated as ELSA during the transition period. Good news for me.
There is an administrative typo error I need to correct in the on-line in the FAA registration database. The plane is listed as SLSA on-line whereas the Airworthyness Certificate states ELSA. I don't expect it to be any big deal to get the on-line registration info corrected.
