I fired up the 532 with the new belly radiator yesterday and it isn't enough by itself at least while the plane is sitting still. Seemed a little worse with the cowling on due to the lip. I am going to run both side and belly radiator tomorrow to see how it cools. It is supposed to hit 100 here tomorrow so that should be a good test of the cooling system. I would not be able to climb with the side radiator alone. Hopefully the combination will be enough to keep me cool for tomorrow to fly to lunch. Sunday I might do some experimenting with foam and tape to smooth out the cowling lip. My radiator is hanging a couple inches below the fuselage. I had expected that I will need to make a scoop for it to force air through the radiator but wanted to try it in free air to see if it would work on its own.

I called them this morning.  Asked about 6- 6' pieces of 1/2" X .035" 4130 tubing.  She said if I would take 40' she would sell it for $.76 per ft.  Aircraft spruce right now is about $2.80 per ft. for the same stuff.  She did say it was made in China however.....  They are closing up in September.  Good price, but can you trust it?  Jim

I edited the original post to embed the video.  Just an FYI... when your on youtube, click the share link under your videos and copy that code into your post.  The software will automatically embed the video.

For some reason, if your using firefox, it wont let you highlight the text in the link, right click, copy then paste it into the post.  You have to highlight the text on youtube, then hit control C... go to the post on AFF and click where you want the video to show (under your text heading or caption) and hit control V.  This will copy, then paste the text from you tube.

The only thing I noticed that you really may want to consider doing differently is to do a rolling mag check when on any surface other than pavement.  You can suck up rocks really easy and start dinging up the prop QUICKLY.

When coming out of a high altitude strip, or any strip for that matter, dont leave any runway behind you on the take off run.  3 most useless things in an airplane are.... runway behind you, altitude above you and the gas you left at the pump..

Keep on keeping on Mr.  Glad your still flying!!

4000 msl Landing Gold Mine Alaska
This was my second attempt to land at a gold mine near Eureka Alaska.  First time came in hot and had to go around. Came pretty close to some tree.  Beautiful area.

    This is the landing.

    This is the Takeoff.

    Hope you enjoy.

Even without the picture, you can figure this out by drawing X's between old rivets - Don't know how yours will work out, or if there is some spacing difference in my bracket rivets, but I only got 6 more rivets in my bracket - Guess 6 is better than none?

Dean Wilson is a good designer, but Dan Denny was a good salesman - That was the difference, IMO.
Reminds me of Iacocca who made millions selling Chrysler when we (the workers) actually financed it, and got screwed!

    Joey,

I too have noticed on other sites.. Even though the KF and Avid are mississippi cousins (you know, kissable ones ) the KF drivers tend to get a bit snooty when an Avid driver enters the mix... even though, without the Avid, there would ahve never been a kitfox.  Hows that for gratitude

The biggest improvements that the early KF has over the Avid is the longer wing and less washout.  From the MK IV on the KF has made ALOT of good changes for certain, but it still does not have the feel and the low and slow capabilities of the early mod I-IV.  To each thier own though and it must be working for them because they are doing a hell of a good business!

I ahd the engineer look at the design differences, and he said for sure, going wit hthe lower cabane vee like the cub would do wonders to spread the load and not put as much compression forces on the fuse side.  It would put a more equal tension load on it.  Without having actual measurements of the gear legs and the cabane vee, he can't run the numbers to see what the true loads are, but first reaction is..... GO WITH THE 70 yr old design... it has always worked

Once I get the gear in my possesion, I can get measurements and have him run the full numbers, or, if one of you have a set of the gear handy and would like to pull some numbers for me, it would get this going alot quicker.

I saved it as a jpg, maybe you can open that.

When you clicked on the PDF file, were you just telling it to open, or did you save it to your computer?  You may need to update adobe..

    Jim,
When I did mine, I was just going to spot blast the areas that had dings in the powder coat.... as you said, it takes forever to get that powder coat off.  So I used the wire wheel to strip the powder coat in the areas that needed it, then used the sand blaster to prep the tubes and get the anchor profile I wanted.  I used the polyfiber green epoxy primer then covered over that.

Some of the areas in the tail cluster I used my dremel on a flex head with a wire wheel.  It was still faster and easier to use that then to try and blast the area to remmove the powder coating....

Quick way to get rid of it..... grab you propane torch and quickly hit the area with it... it turns to powder then blasts right off.  I am not talking about getting the tubing to 700° either

  16. akflyer added a post in a topic need guage help

You have a bad connection or a bad sender more than likely.  The gauge measures resistance and you seem to have alot of it   I would get a new sender and see if things go back to normal.  You can also put the sending unit in a pan of water and boil it (with the gauge hooked up) and see if it reads 220 when the water starts to boil..

    need guage help
    Guys,

I have simple ( or actually a simple minded) question.  I have an electric UMA water guage on my 582.  It reads 80 degrees when it it powered up.  Is that considered zero or is it just reading ambient temp.  I'm trying to determine if I have a cooling issue or a guage issue.  I've taken the sender out of the waterline and put it in some cold water and it still reads 80 degrees.  The cyl head temps and the egts are normal to low but the water temp is reading high (200+)

    thanks,

It's amazing how quickly the die hard Kitfox fans will get their panties in a wad when you mention Avids or Dean Wilson. I made the mistake of going to the Factory Fly-in in 2010. I stayed the night with an old friend and took off as soon as I can could get my plane loaded the next morning. If the main reason I stopped in hadn't been to see my buddy I would have left that evening. Everyone was really nice unitl that question of Which one is yours came up.... Sitting next to a Kitfox one or two with the smooth cowl you can't tell the difference. Between my plane and being half the age of 90% of the people there (no offense Ed ) I felt really out of place.

  20. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Sputzee's new legs

It is similar to the standard Avid Mk4 gear that Grove has on their website.  It is modified in that it is 3" wider and 2-1/2" taller than normal.

Dave's plane operates on a MTOW of 1320#, the spring has a gross of 1250#.

What width / thickness / GW is your new gear? Looks great!
I was wondering about the forward rake too - One photo looked normal, the other forward.

If you have rust, then a little scotchbrite or sanding - then wipe with a thinner - I like laquer thinner because it evaporates quickly and dissolves most things. Maybe someone else has a better way?
I would use the biggest grit my gun can handle

Thanks Ed for the info.  I think maybe my grit is to small.  There was some medium grit in the sandblaster when I started.  It did seem to work better, although it did pit the metal more than the finer stuff.  The reason I was wanting to get down to the metel was there were places where the paint was chipped and a bit of rust would be there, or even some bits of loose paint with a little rust under that paint.  What's the best way to clean the tubes before paint goes on?  Thanks,  Jim

No, you see correct.  The tires are 3-4" forward from the old gear.

I flew the plane tonight.  It gained an easy 5-8 mph in cruise due to decrease in drag from all the springs and struts of the old gear.  Dave put 3-4 hours on it today.  He says it is a totally different handling plane on the ground and in transition.  The track is 78" wide now!!

He's mad he didn't go this way from the start.  He loved they way my plane worked with the Grove spring.
