Jim,From the best of my knowledge, to feed the 1800cc or 109 cubic inch Subaru, you need more gas flow at max power than the 582 - much like the Lycomings and Continental engines of that size, I think you are supposed to have 3/8 aluminum lines, which are 5/16 ID. There is a formula for fuel flow based on cubic inches, but I would have to go back to my books to find it.
The original lines to feed my 2-barrel Holly carb were 3/8, so that is what I am going by for the system.
The requirement from the FAA on fuel flow is 150% of consumption at max power for gravity systems, and 125% for pump systems. The system is supposed to be flow-tested to prove it meets the requirements.
The confusion may come from the fact that at cruise my Soob will burn less gas than the 2-cycles, and they use 1/4 inch ID lines. The tubes on the caps are only passing air, which is less dense than gas, so they can be smaller. I have the 1/4 tubes on my caps too.
Hope this makes sense, and helps explain my situation better. I am trying to get better educated on the different types of plastic fuel lines, and their costs and fittings.

Ed,  I wonder why you need 5/16" line.  I've used 1/4" on all the Avids I've had, never ran short of fuel.  Even the Jabiru with gravity feed was fine.  I have had the 1/4" aluminum tubes pointing forward on the gas caps on the last two Avids, and I'm sure that helps some.  JIm

Hey I like the way you did it better than the way I did.  Had an oil line blow 2 years ago, and landed in a to short field.  Made the news that night..... Hopefully I can finish the rebuild this winter.  Jim

Reading Spruce, and the Polyurethene got the highest praise in the ads - better than the polyetheline or whatever poly is there. I could see nylon getting brittle over time - but it seems to work fine in brake lines?Grainger is just too proud of that yellow - I think I will let them keep it.
    Thanks,

    Randy,
Did you ever hit the kusty for silvers? I never even hit it this year after you showed me your super not so secret hole. I like the white sand beaches much better at your spot!

How the bad word did I miss these pics before it was a great day of fishing and flying, but I'm sure I logged more hours flying than fishing darn my bad luck! My laptop went TU on me so I lost a ton of pictures I had downloaded from this day.

    Bandit,

I was over at bob's yesterday trying to get his IE to play embedded videos and no mater what I did it just wouldn't do it. Switched him over to Firefox and all works well now. You may try downloading Firefox and use that instead of IE.. I hate IE for a multitude of reasons

As I said Ed, I couldn't find 5/16" blue line either so I used Gates Barricade. The link I provided in Post #2 might help you re: sizes available. Nylon line may work well in cars but I wouldn't put it in my aircraft, IMHO. Only other plastic fuel line I would feel comfortable using besides Bing would be yellow Tygon. Graingers has 3/8" id... But... $250 for 50'... OUCH!

I posted this earlier, but mistakenly put it in the vent line posts

    Doug, SuberAvid, Joey, anyone,
I cant find the blue line in large enough diameter to feed my Soob. I need 5/16 ID minimum, but prefer 3/8 ID. What can you tell me about the 2 kinds of Polywhatever, and also Nylon?
    Any suggestions?

That makes sense Doug. Getting rid of the gas smell would be a plus. The only time I notice it in mine is when I open it up for the first time after it's sat in the hangar a few days but the wife says I always have a distinct scent after I've been out flying lol.

    Doug, SuberAvid, anyone,
I cant find any of the blue tubing listed big enough for my Soob - Any good info on the Nylon or Poly-whatever it is, and the Polyurethene that you can give me. Minimum 5/16 ID, prefer 3/8 ID.

No problems. The caps seal with PVC glue. Melts them to the core PVC 6" pipe. For the fittings I used Permatex fuel sealant with again no issues. You don't want to over tighten the fittings although they do snug up nicely. I do like the extra fuel and as I posted before I put the low fuel sensor at the two gallon level. The low fuel sensor information is posted on the yahoo group site in the files area. Pretty easy to build.

Joey- 5/16" i.d. is what the KF4 w/912 plumbing calls for to the fuel pump, 1/4" Bing blue line from pump to carbs. Barricade is definitely heavier but I couldn't find 5/16" i.d. blue line and my cockpit no longer smells of gas so all is good!

    @ Ed- 9/16" o.d.

    Idaho Backcountry flying
This video was from 2010. I've been going back and rehashing a lot of flying videos lately since I'm still deployed and can't fly and I figure we have a lot of new folks on here now that we didn't have when I posted this the first time right after the trip. My good friend shot all this footage. He recently sold that S-7. It was one awesome machine. Watch the video full screen it has a lot of nice shots in it including some good ones of my plane.

I was raised with a father who owned 15 auto shops. When he passed away my mother remarried a few years later to great guy who went to embry riddle and had been a mechanic his whole life. He recently passed as well. Rest in peace to both of them.

I suppose I was fortunate to be raised with a lot of mechanical knowledge but it is really amazing to me how many people I run across nowadays who cannot change a spark plug or do an oil change. I'm in the business of building custom jeeps and sell alot of jeep parts too. Unfortunately when I sell a part to a local their vehicle usually comes back about 2 weeks later all screwed up. It's just amazing to me.

I have had conversations with local pilots who just do not know how a carbureted 4 stroke engine works. Let alone a 2 stroke. You should see their faces when I am rebuilding a Mazda rotary! Mind = Blown! Haha

Paul I think you are right. 2-strokes are definitly not turn key. I think a lot of people buy a used plane and think they can just jump in and go. There was one guy on there who was fouling plugs and 2 pages later they finally figured out that it had oil injection and he had also been premixing the fuel because that's what a buddy told him to do. He was running 25:1 and then some. Had no idea it was oil injected. You would think that reservoir and plumbing would have made him curious but I guess not. At least someone told him to mix the gas or eventually it probably would have burned up when it ran out of oil. There's no way I would buy a two stroke powered LSA that someone else built without going through it with a fine toothed comb before trying to fly it but that's just me the inquisitive rocket scientist

I do think there's a sometimes unstated deal that if you're going to fly a two-stroke, you have to learn a lot about them.  My first years of flying were in 152's and 172's at FBO's and a flying club.  I learned next to zero about their powerplants.  It wasn't encouraged and it wasn't necessary.  This may carry over to folks who purchase ready made LSA's with 912's and similar.  Many of these just need their annual and regular oil changes and away they go.  If they avoid the low RPM gearbox chatter area, they'll probably have a good experience with little in-depth knowledge.

I can't imagine trying to fly a two stroke that way, it just wouldn't work.  I'm not unhappy with mine, but I've still got a bit of climbing to do on the knowledge curve.  I'm just over a hundred hours on my 582 and it hasn't burped. farted or gone silent on me while in the air.  I'm building confidence with every flight.

Good lord it's no wonder two-strokes get a bad rap
I just spent a while reading thru the Rotax-Owner forum, specifically the two-stroke area. Reading some of the "issues" people were having were mind blowing. I'm no expert by any means as you guys know by my silly questions sometimes, but common sense goes a long ways. Just about every thread on there concreted my theory that almost all the issues people have with 2-strokes are caused by not having any idea how they work or how to plumb one properly. If they would learn that they can't treat them like a Briggs and Stratton motor they would have a lot better luck with them.

Just a few of many examples

If you can't figure out if a bolt is metric or standard you probably outta be paying someone else to work on your crap for you!

Did you try a place that actually sells oil? I had no idea that gear oil was hard to find.

At least this guy is trying to learn how it works.

Between the Rotax manual and CPS's catalog tech articles you can learn ALOT! I wonder how many of these same people gave up with their 2-stroke and then went and told all their Lycoming operating buddies how terrible of an engine they are because you can't just turn the key and go for 1500 hrs with nothing but oil changes.
