It stinks when people let something sit for 10 years and then put a way too of high of price on it based on what they have into it or what they think it's worth and won't budge regardless of what the market is really doing.

There was a place in Europe that was doing conversions on the VW motors.  The iron block (even on the newest TDIs) makes them heavy.  Something like 270# with a PSRU.

Not all diesels are slow turning.  My 2001 VW TDI (99 hp) redlines at 5000 rpm with peak torque something like 4200.  My wife's new '12 TDI (140 hp) reds at 5500 rpm, peak torque around 4500.  The small diesels are not long stroke motors like my 94 Dodge Cummins (Redline at 3000, peak torque at 1700) highly derated to a modified 230 hp - 600 ft/lb with a motor weight of near 1200#.  The little ones are mostly square or slightly under square.

I'd love to have a Jet A burning recip motor for my Kitfox.

asw27p8 let me fly this fine bird a few days ago.  It's a good, simple, Kitfox with 80hp.  It flies very smooth and quiet and has a great climb rate.  It's built the way a Kitfox is suppose to be built!!  Bump for a great airplane at a great price

Wasn't Valley the ones who made the V8 silent chain reddrives? A machinist in Nikiski, Alaska made one for an EA-81 - I had the prints somewhere.
Diesels run slow anyway, or used to - don't think you should need a redrive. Wonder what the little VW weighs?

Shoot me your addy in a PM and I can shoot you a DVD called "deep inside your 2 stroke rotax"  It will take you through it A to Z.  I also have pullers for the gear on B and C boxes I don't mind loaning out.  There really are no other specialty tools to tear the engine down other than a steering wheel puller for the mag and an allen wrench to drop in the hole to keep the crank from turning when your busting loose the big nut on the end of the crank.

dealing with the circlips on the pistons is a pain but using a screw driver you can do them.  I ground a little slot in the end of the screw driver to hold them, or you can file a notch in a set of needle nose pliers to help with the re-install.  The only other thing to pay attention to is putting the pie plate back on right.

All in all, its a very easy engine to pull down and rebuild / reseal.

It should be getting close to a useable weight, the things it needs are to be a popular enough car engine that there are plenty to be had, a light weight PSRU and cooling system, If there are enough of them built there is a possibility of lightening it up enough to be used as an aircraft conversion. I still like diesels, if nothing else you save the weight of the ignition system, the one I thought was going to make it is being used in UAVs right now so it may come available within a few years, the DAIRwith the scott stroke engine

yeah, they are a LOT heavier on the controls etc.. The avid is not going anywhere, its my fun plane.  The 180 will be for the longer trips taking the wife and baby along.  And for me and my buddy go get out and explore more of AK and do some hunting further out than we can in the Avid or PA12.  I figure that if I take the 180 loaded up with fuel and a good camp, and he takes the PA12 for the short lake work, we can do some awesome hunting and fishing trips in style and comfort!

The wife is really big on having a place to tie down the baby in the car seat   hence I had to look for the bigger plane.  The 180 has always been my favorite plane for looks and use.  To be able to get my hands on one finally has been a long time coming.  Most of all, just like I did with my Avid, I am happy to be able to save another plane from the junk yard and keep a beautiful plane from turning into ramp mummy junk.  It kills me to see good aircraft sitting at a tie down and not being moved or used for years, yet have owners that refuse to sell even though the tires are rotted off and the rudder or elevator has corroded to nothing.  I was happy to get a chance to save this one

It's the same everywhere - a guy I worked with got fired for walking out of Chrysler plant with a gallon of paint he took out of the dumpster - at the same time, a $51 Million plant clean-out and remodeling was going on and it all went out on a scrap train -I later bought 5 gallon buckets of Chrysler tools and milling cutters and such from a local salvage seller for $25 a bucket!
When I worked for the Coast Guard, they scrapped new stuff every week - $$$$ of it!
Government and Military are the biggest wasters we have.

    Leni,
I really appreciate your efforts - and really miss the site when it is down - I do well to turn on the puter -
Now a really ignorant question - While the site was down I went searching for another way to get to it - On Yahoo search, I found the IP# and the Chicago company name that makes the site, and all the other sites they post too - With all the bastards hacking, why in hell would all this technical info, which don't mean shit to me, be posted for anyone to read?
Thanks so much for doing this for us.

well I figured that one out a few days ago so I am in the same boat!  Me thinks I am gonna take a stab at it and set up and alternate site, back it all up and migrate it to that so nothing on the original server is hurt.. ummm, I mean changed yet.. once I figure out that I have made the alternate site work properly I can do the site migration for real.  basically means I have to do this twice, but I get a practice run so I hopefully dont screw anything up on the real move!
