    Landing gear safety cables
Are the Kitfox and Avid landing Gear safety cables an asset or liability?
When metal hits metal things bend or break.
After 18 years of not having to weld on  my Kitfox,  I bent the bungee truss under the seat.
The gear legs and longerons were unharmed and I was able to fly it back.
Joey told me that he has removed the safety cables on his Avid for this very reason.
I mention this only for other Avid and Fox owners to consider to hopefully prevent what happened to me
I do not like flying without Safety cables even though I have not had a bungee fail.
If going with safety cables again, I would make them as long as possible to keep the airframe out of the dirt (maybe not the prop) or how about a second set of bungees wrapped loose over the primary bungees to act as a progressive suspension and act as a safety ?

TIME TO GET THE SAWZALL, TORCH, GRINDER AND WELDER OUT

Awhile back I asked about Grove gear. Is it time for grove gear?
    Thanks Herman

Don't have a measurement Herman but having flown both the over the nose visibility is much better in an Avid. In fact in cruise you have to make your visual reference look like you are nose down slightly to keep from climbing.

    Avid visability
It appears that the Avid top cowl is lower on the windscreen than the Kitfox top cowl piece which would give better forward visability.
I am considering replacing my Kitfox round cowl with a smooth Avid style cowl even if it means lowering the 582 or turning it upside down Avid style.
Does anyone have their Avid nearby to get a vertical measurement from the longeron on the bottom of the fuselage to where the cowl meets the windscreen?
Are there any new or used Avid cowls available?
    Thanks
    Herman

Well after another day in the hangar going through the squawk list we put it in the float pong yesterday and flew it out to the hangar so its home now!  wings were 17 gusting 27 but straight down 1W so take of was quick even though I was just taking it easy on the first TO.  Hope the rain lets up and I get to put a couple more hours on it today.  The water level in the lake has come up almost 2 feet in the last week from the rain.

Here's one, a little bit of a hop for you though in Western NC.  There are several Kitfox's & Avid's in my immediate area but they choose not to be online.

A few pics of the new V8 LS1 Drivetrain and Suspension Assemblies.  Unfortunately I forgot pictures of the tubular control arms, sway bars and end links.  Oh well.  I'm hoping the Miata sheet metal can handle to torque.  V8 Roadsters recently had a chassis failure which concerns me a little

It's strictly a road race car, mostly plan on running at VIR, CMP and Road Atlanta.  I thought I had the weight distribution figured out but I got it wrong, it's hard to determine on paper.

The Miata is going to have to suffice, no budget for the "Exocet" chassis unfortunately.  I'm also going to be limited on tire size for the time being.  How about 225/50/15's being twisted by 400-450whp....  Should be interesting.

A little progress is done on the Miata Roller.  Still a LONG ways to go though.

The Maul Tailwheel:  On the tailwheel is a sheet-metal plate with two screws holding it in place.  If you remove this plate, the tailwheel will not go into full swivel mode.

This will keep the wheel locked to the steering of the rudder.  This is the most common cause of ground-loops (IMO) with these planes combined with low tailwheel time pilots.  I have also seen a high time tailwheel pilot and CFI repeatedly ground loop an Avid because of a loose tailwheel.  Once you have mastered the plane, replacing the cam plate will allow for easier ground handling.

Well, that didn't work for me. All fittings were leaking. The fuel was definitely softening the permatex. Blast. Now what?

You are correct Chris - but they also completely changed the type of landing gear - major change there - could be done very simply without changing the gear.EDMO

Kitfox 1 clone and Fat Avid fuselages & parts for sale
95% complete copy fuselage - could be modified for higher gross weight, about 90% of parts to complete already built, No Wings, Kitfox 2 - 950 gw struts, fixtures to build wing ribs with sample rib, droop tips, one flaperon, tailfeathers, landing gear with 8 inch wheels, tires, matco brakes, MC4's, tailwheel, bump cowls, seat and Kitfox seatcovers, turtledeck, nose header tank, 532 with mount, radiator and exhausts, wing tank available, all original engine instruments and senders, controls, brake pedals, builders manual, etc, etc. PM me for questions.
Also have Fat-Avid / Highlander / Magnum copy fuselage - no parts, but have Magnum build manual.
Maybe I should compare this fuselage with the Kitfox  - maybe more like the Avid Magnum or Highlander?
This fuselage measures about 17 feet on lower longeron, and about 48 inches wide at widest point - compared to Kitfox 2 at 14 feet and 36 inches wide.

    Hi Mark,

I live in the Tri Cities Wa and have two non flying Avids currently. An Avid Magnum and a Fat Avid. I have 2 friends here in the Tri Cities with 912 MKIV's. You are welcome to stop by when you are in the area and have a look. We have a fair amount of accumulated Avid knowledge in our little group here in the Tri Cities.

I will be out of town for the next week, maybe two, but will be back after that.

The footwell design of the Airdale is totally different.

The mod done by my friend was very simple and easy to do. No jigging or crazy details needed. A couple of sticks of tubing, a little cutting and welding. Done.

Extending the fiberglass of the standard cowl to cover the modification would be the hardest part.

Wasn't that footwell extension already done in the pursang and airdale?  I'd hate to reinvent the wheel if Brett has the tooling to make the kit, the jigs and everything.  If only someone could reach him.
