It is maybe a little thicker than West epoxy so I would say medium epoxy. It will flow fairly easy.

I think that Joey should put this in the files and forms as an addition to the "History", if that is possible.

    Paul,
It might help me and others to know what the viscosity of the Caswell is - Is it close to water or closer to thick epoxy?

I believe John, has a very large data base that we could all benefit if published in the right way,
He has also experimented with drag reduction, in few places on the AVID.
he was skeptic about the VG´s under the wing when I first published this report on the yahoo group long time ago, but I can see he really pay attention to the fact that this little tiny THINGS, help keeping the airflow attached to a surface and or oriented in our benefit!

I´m trying to get the old messages with his reports and findings, but that freaking new format is driving me mad, it always comes the AD screen and won´t let me go further!!!

ANY chance we can get the exact locations of the VG on the wing tip, and what does this means for the performance!!

    Regards

are you looking for the older mount or the MK IV mount?  they are totally different.  I have one for a model C that is just gathering dust.  I was going to use it for the engine conversion, but I think I will be starting from scratch on a mount so I can mount the engine upright like in a Kitfox.

the wing is the same therefore the CG should be the same.  11.185" to 16.5"  I like mine best around 18".   In a phone conversation with Dean Wilson, he stated the published aft CG limit was very conservative and for someone wanting the beast STOL 18-19" was the best number, and DO NOT stall it with a CG aft of 20" unless you have full flaperons on or you will never get the nose pushed over.

Mine empty is close to the forward limit, however like ChrisB, with survival gear and the typical camping gear / supply load my normal flights are right around the 18" mark.

While I agree that they are expensive, they are awfully nice planes. I toured the facility a few years ago with the flying farmers. (Im not a farmer, but have friends who are) We all flew up in our planes for a tour of the facility and it was incredible. They have a state of the art manufacturing facility and Quality control second to none. You might not like the value proposition of the planes, but there is no denying they probably have the best airplane manufacturing facility anywhere...period. I work for a company that manufactures high tech high quality neurodiagnostic medical devices and their facility and QC put us to shame.

My dream plane is the Highlander SuperStol.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised to see S12 get fired up over that one.  I am thinking that CC is a big contributor to the site so the guys are gonna defend it to the biter end.  Reason # 5498702 that I don't take advertisers or manufactures contributions on here (not that any manufacture has ever approached me   )  We are free to call it like we see it.

Joey, you better get the wifes car done before you start upgrading the plane or you just may have that issue!  Don't wanna have to call you Bobbit!

For you Motorsport junkies...Summit Racing Military Appreciation Tour pics
I am currently deployed and have been hearing that we had some NHRA guys coming to visit for the last week or so. I went to check it out tonight and found out it was the Summit Racing Military Appreciation Tour. It was awesome! They gave away a lot of free stuff and I received several autographed pieces from the Summit sponsored racing guys. Meeting Dan Runte, the Bigfoot driver was really cool. He was a hero of mine growing up. In addition to him I hung out with Jim Greenleaf, Summits Motorsport and Event manager, Eddie Krawiec and Andrew Hines both Pro Stock bike champions, and Jason Line and Greg Anderson Pro Stock champions.

    Jason Line and Greg Anderson

Eddie Krawiec, Andrew Hines, and Army Special Forces Association rep Wayne Reed.

Dan Runte Very cool guy! This is the guy that hucked Bigfoot 200 feet over a 727 airplane. I asked him if that landing hurt as much as it looked like it did....he said YES!

    Jim Greenleaf

The cool stuff they were giving away

Thanks Summit! I guess I know who my next order for Mustang parts will be through.

Whew Larry you got S12 Flyer fired up there and he's an experimental guy. He must wish he could afford one. Sure they are nicer but it's just like when I am up in Idaho sitting on the top of Mile Hi. I am doing the same exact thing the guys in the 100K Maule M-7's and 185s on 31's are doing and my whole plane costs less than their prop did and I burned up less fuel in my entire weeks trip from CA to Idaho as they do in one day of playing out there. Unless your filthy stinkin rich it makes flying a whole lot more fun when your not constantly staring at the fuel flow and wondering how much money this flight is costing you. Plus I'm convinced that you haven't really flown until you've gone at least 500NM in a single day at less than 100mph. Throw a two stroke into the mix and well.... lets just say I don't need a 200K plane for the reason Larry mentioned in the first post..hahahaha

I don't know if this is what you are asking, but my original MKIV (gone several years ago), my Magnum and my Fat Avid were the same WRT weight and balance envelope and calculations. I can't remember the numbers exactly, but the front of wing is the datum and acceptable range is something like -11 to -16 inches. DONT TAKE THE NUMBERS I JUST SPOUTED AS CORRECT. All I mean to say is the calculations and acceptable range is the same for what ever Avid you fly so if you have a MKIV manual that tells you how to run the numbers, it is done exactly the same on a Magnum or a Fat Avid, or an A model.

With regard to where the weight and balance falls within the acceptable range, I love to camp so I like it to fall towards the fromt of the CG range empty so I can carry all my camping gear. Every ounce of gear (for camping, kayaking or biking) moves the CG back so it's a no brainer for me.

I have also found that my Avids flew very well near the forward limit when i wasn't loaded with gear, although I've heard a number of people complain about operating at the forward limit. I suppose if you could care less about camping or carrying stuff and want to eek every bit of performance out of the plane you should shoot for a rear CG. But then you can't carry much stuff without ending up too far back.

It's all about your mission I guess.

I actually had an interview with those guys in Yakima.  They're selling to someone because that was a nice facility they got there.
Don't worry, in 50 years the IV-1200 will be the new idol.

PS - totally agree, bad investment.

    Avid Motor Mount Wanted
I am looking for an Avid motor mount or a good drawing to build one from for a 582. This will be used to make some parts available to support the Avid. I keep hoping that Airdale will come back to life but I am losing hope.

I gotta go with ya on this one.  How many 240K CC have kicked ass at Valdez?  Or any other STOL competition?  I am amazed that people will actually pay that much effin money for a 2 seat 100 MPH plane.

Great pictures Joey and Chris, you guys sure know how to use this planes!
Question to Joey; any feed back on the long spring landing gear (bush Gear)?? performance, ground handling, weight? drag?
I would love to have a bush gear but I think they are too long, more easy to bend?? perhaps??

I'm probably gonna get the smack down over at BCP.

Guys are going on and on over the $175,000 Carbon Cub and how awesome they are.  I personally saw, this last summer at OSH, one of these things - flown by a company pilot - get completely embarrassed by a ratty old Kitfox IV-1200, not to mention the new Just Super STOL.

I just can't comprehend why anyone would spend upwards of $175K on a 1930's tech Cub with a little carbon in it to try and keep it light.  Not to mention the $240,000 small penis compensator that Joey pointed out.

Again I wouldn't buy a dog house from Eggenfellner.  If they have sold 200 of these things, where are they?  What I know about his business practices, maybe he took the money for 200 of them.  There certainly isn't 200 of them flying, that's for sure.
