  2. lostman added a post in a topic Alternator tests?

I have a 2001 F250 superduty that does the same thing. I took it to an electric auto specialist and he couldn't even tell me what was going on. I've replaced the alternator and no joy (it was bad anyway, but I was hoping it was the diode). I still haven't been able to chase down the nasty little draw! It's harder with two batteries since my draw seems to change depending on which negative cable I hook my mulitmeter inline with.
My suggestion is to start by getting the meter in place then one by one pulling the main fuses until you see the draw disappear. Then you have to chase the entire circuit down, one piece at a time, I hate electrical problems!
    Good luck with it Ed!

My sister has a F150 about the same vintage had the exact same problem. The stealer eventually found a rely somewhere that didn't operate properly (I think in the radio circuit?).

2002 Ford Ranger 4x4 - If I don't start it at least once a week, battery goes dead.  Old battery was doing same, so bought a new one about a year ago.  all lights and switches off and GPS unplugged.   I will try the tests.
A battery disconnect would only be used when it is parked - I had one hidden on my Mustang to prevent theft - Works on planes too!
    Thanks,

Don't disconnect the battery while running on modern vehicles.  This will damage the charging system.  Same with running without a battery.  Even a dead battery is better than nothing.

What year, make, model is your truck?

In the old days you could put a piece of metal against the back side of the alternator and if it was magnetized it was charging...

Disconnect either the positive or negative lead from the batter and insert an ammeter in the line (with engine not running, lights off, doors closed etc) and look for current draw. Alternatively, get a resistor (100 ohm should be OK) and place it in the same way you would hook the ammeter I described above and measure voltage drop across the resistor with a voltmeter.

If you see current flow (or voltage drop) disconnect the alternator and see if the current draw goes away. If it does, you have found the faulty component. Replace the alternator.

It's probably not the alternator. Is there a dome light or a bed light that is left on that you are not noticing? Much more likely.

Thanks Joey, that makes sense. I figured that might be the case. Looks like it would definitely be worth installing on the Pursang then!

    Alternator tests?
I think a diode in my truck alternator is draining my battery - is there a simple test to verify this?
Would a battery disconnect be a solution?  on hot or ground side, or does it matter?
This could apply to planes too.

Great responses. I appreciate it. I've decided to go the Water Wetter route and the belly radiator.

Ed - you've dibs on the "cheeks" pending the belly outcome.

From what I have been told, the old Homestead act of 1930, which no longer exists, brought farmers from Wisconsin to Alaska, has mostly been a failure - the farms and dairies have never made a profit on paper, and still get big subsidies from taxpayers.
Beware of houses with Zero- Lots.....You wont own the land....Some subdivisions are doing this too.
A bunch of people made mining claims along the road between Seward highway and Kenai, and built homes there, but never mined, got busted while I was there and their homes had to be moved off of government land or bulldozed.
The native houses you see on TV were mostly built with your money, and the facilities are also built and maintained by you.
Life is a lot different up there - but it might have been a lot different for them if we hadn't bought it from Russia.
At least we got the gold and oil - well, part of the oil - for now.

I have said this before, but will repeat it for those who haven't read it:
Some of us - me - don't care for our head to be inbetween the tubes - The guy who landed my KF1 in a tree just bent the hell out of those tubes and got 165 stitches in his head - and he was not even between them.  If he had been taller he might not have survived.  My head clears the tubes by 2 inches - just enough to put the foam pipe insulation around them for padding.

    Lake Louise Trip
Finally getting back to winter again and weather was perfect on Friday so I towed the plane to the other side of the runway and slid it off the trailer onto a rather rough but solid Wolf lake.  I thought I would do some scouting for wolves in Unit 13 so pointed the nose up the Matanuska River and headed out.  The air was pretty smooth and only had me down to about 55 mph at one point but once I got to the Matanuska glacier and turned into Caibou creek canyon the wind eased up pretty quickly.

I flew over the mine and it looked pretty tucked in for the winter, went through the pass and started sliding down the valleys at 100ft AGL throttled back to around 70 mph and leaned to 1425 burning about 2.6 gph; I love it.  Plenty of moose here and there scattered along the creek bottoms.  Landed at the lake where I shot my caribou last year; took a break and shot some pictures; no people, no sounds, just stillness and solitude.

Airborn again I flew west to the Black river and finally found some caribou.  There were a lot of old tracks all over but no animals until out to the Black River.  Flew down it until I decided to turn and fly up the Tyone River to Lake Louise.  Found a few more small groups of caribou along the way.  A huge valley there and some different mountains than I usually see.  The Wrangle's Mt Sanford and Mt Wrangle and Alaska Range mountains from the south side.  Flew up Tyone lake, Susitna lake and landed on Lake Luise to take another needed break and some photographic proof.

Time was 4:30 then and the sun was begining to set so I had to beat cletes toward home.  Pointed the nose back at the Talkeetna's and upped cruise to make a little time and get some heat on my hands since it was about 0 and I had been taking pictures out there on the lake with no gloves (I should know better).  Started climbing to get through the pass  The Talkeetna's are so beautiful and rugged, I decided since I was pretty high I would just push it up a little more (about 6500') and fly up the canyon to cross into the Chickaloon River rather than flying directly to the Matanuska.  It is pretty impressive and the pictures just do not do it justice.  Crossed the knife edge ridges to the Chickaloon and flew down it to the Matanuska and home.  Made up a little speed on the way back that I lost on the way up as I hit 115 ground speed flying down the valley.  Always fun landing on the polished ice of Wolf lake and having to spin it 180 to stop before hitting the far bank.

Hope that's not too many pictures.  Man, you just can't beat days like that!

Ed is right, it depends a lot on where you want to buy.  What the Government pays to build housing and support utilities in the Bush for those who are eligable is crazy.  You could give each member of every family $1/2 Mil and move them to Anchorage plus give them housing and it would be cheaper.

In the rural areas outside of Anchorage but within commuting distance the prices are pretty reasonable; one acre with a modest 3 bedroom home can be bought for $200K to $250K
