Surfing the Polar Vortex in a 180 P.Ponk
Local friend just bought a 180 w/ a O-470-50 P.Ponk Super Eagle conversion and shot a short video playing in the snow. The other 180 is a P.Ponk that spends summers floating on a local lake. I'm betting the new one is on floats either this year or next too. Getting pretty sick of the snow and cold this year but  ski flying looks like F-U-N!

Ed, Try listing it as Piper Aircraft Brake Parts, people will do a search for a specific item they are looking for and it should come up after typing in Piper brake parts.I think you will just use the aviation parts category and it should come up.Im not a ebay guru but have bought and sold some racecar parts.Dont feel bad Im old school myself.Randy

    Av8r3400,
I think it is easier/better for the reasons Randy stated, but the lack of user references make me give it a thumbs down for a first time user. I'm sure that after I finish this project, I will have a full understanding of how to use their product and I will argue that it is better than the others, because I used it Isn't that what we do here? Ha!
The big advantage I see in using Superflite comes after taping. Instead of poly brush and poly spray coats, Superflite uses a UV primer that is sprayed. Also, Superflite top coat is shinny unlike the original Polyfiber finishes...but I think Poly fiber has a new line of shinny finishes or at least I thought I heard that.

    Randy,
It is good to know that the Polyfiber paint is compatible, I mean it should be, all the chemicals are basically the same.
So did you use poly brush and poly spray then the poly top coat?

I know that Superflite is proud of their paint, and of course the colors I like are the most expensive colors!

Randy, did you run a tape over your false ribs? I'm asking a little late because I already did it, but I would like to know for future projects.
I wasn't going to do it, but I was worried that just the fabric covering the false ribs would get worn through.

    Thanks,
    Ron

It's not Joey's fault.  It was my failed delivery.  You should've seen me in high school.  It was bad.

That is looking good Ron.  I used the Superflight glue system and liked it better than the Polyfiber.  Much less sticky way to do it by brushing it on, letting it dry, laying on the fabric or tape and brushing the thin glue/MEK to penetrate and disolve the glue underneath.  I was planning to use the paint but they were having some real shipping problems to AK at the time and I could not get it after several attempts and used the Polyfiber paint system instead.

You don't have to use the flaps but they are nothing to be afraid of and they help in the short field and slow flight performance of the plane.  Once you get used to flying it a while then try it using the flaps for landing, takeoff and slow flight.

Larry make that $4000 for the overhaul if you replace the crank. The 503 is the best 2 stroke you can buy! I now have 974 hours on mine.

dholly, Sorry but my corvair engine is not for sale. I will be bringing my plane home some time this summer. I will make sure it will be tied down very well before I get it on the road. Thanks for the advise.

Such a shame - that people have to live in such desolate, isolated places, and have to irrigate to keep the runway green!
Please give the owner my condolences and tell him that I have a 1/3 acre and house with public water, sewers, and trash pickup, and I can throw a rock and hit 6 other houses - and I might be willing to trade for all that turf - just move it closer to Missouri!
    Way to go Joey!

An A model Avid will be very small for a 912.  The 503 is an awesome 2-stroke motor and a great match for an A.  Arguably the best 2-stroke aircraft motor Rotax ever made, but it will definitely need a total rebuild.  Unless it was fogged (storage oil sprayed into it before it was left to sit) the crankshaft is probably junk, too.

Don't go cheap on the rebuild and it will serve you for a long, long time, very reliably.

Count on ~$2000 for the overhaul of the motor and if you can get the paperwork sorted in a legal fashion, you'd have a great little cheap time builder.

  19. wolves200 added a post in a topic Let's talk flaperon rigging

Is sun Shining here in South Sweden, and so is time to get my plane out and rig the flaperons, I installed the F7A mod, level the plane and all, and now after everything is done, I noticed that the amount of deflection with full flaps and stick centered (+15) but when I apply left or right stick, the lifting wing is all the way down, (top of the mechanism)... while the other flaperon barely moves, I can´t remember the old system.

I set the system so, stick centered they are 0 degrees no flaps, and +15 degrees full flaps; I don´t have chapter 7 and 8 of the manual, I just look at the old manual posted here.

    IS THIS OK?

    Regards

Cheers Jim. In UK we have a permit to fly scheme for non CofA aircraft. So permit = annual inspection pass. Thanks for your advice. I agree engine needs stripping and inspecting. I just don't know whether to bin it and get a 912. Thanks. Ps do you actually bother to use them as flaps.

If it's an A model, the fuselage would be 36" wide at your shoulders when seated in it.  The B model would be 39".  Rotax says to put new seals in every 5 years, that is maybe sooner than nessesary, but I would do it on the 503 because that will allow a good inspection on the bearings and such inside the engine as well as making sure you don't have an air leak past the old seals.   If the rib tails are rotting, you should probably be able to see it on the exposed ends of the ribs.  Not sure what you mean about renewing the permit, do you mean the annual conditional inspection.  Are you in the US?  Don't be afraid of flaperons, just learn to use your feet on the rudder pedals.  A good slip/skid indicator that is easy to see, and using it till you get the feel for when you are flying coordinated is a big help.  Jim Chuk

Should I buy avid B? Novice. Help.
Hi all. Complete (and I mean complete) newbie here. Apologies in advance. I am taking flying lessons and want a cheap top operate little hour builder. My homework led me to an Avid or kitfox.
Now, I have seen one for sale without a permit in my price range. Please could I get some comments on these questions. Thank you in advance.
    1) it is serial number 180 something. Is this an Avid B?

    2) it has a rotax 503 that has stood unstarted for around 6 to 7 years. Is this model of engine ok and reliable for a 2 stroke? Only 80 hours but will it need completely stripping and rebuilding desks etc due to being stood?
    3) flaperons! I hear horror stories about these. As I am learning to fly then should I be worried about flaperons and associated lack of yaw authority? Also flaperons attachments I hear can come lose as wood can get wet and rot? Do they need to have drains? Do you need bother using the flaps
    4) is an Avid Flyer ok to learn on or tricky. It is a tricycle by the way. Appreciate this is an avid kitfox forum but some good and bad views on the avid would be handy please.
    5) given it has been stood in a barn for 6 ish years but was ok when last flown then what is likely to be needed to renew permit? Wiring checks for vermin perhaps? What should Obe checking that is obvious to you chaps?

    Best wishes.
    Wonderful forum you guys!!

    Superflite revisited
    Hey guys,

I just wanted to revisit my comments on Superflite and update my opinion.
I got off to a rough start, as stated in a previous thread, when I discovered that the glue to MEK mixture was printed incorrectly in the manual and DVD. I had already coated my wing with the wrong mixture so it took me a couple of days to clean all the glue off...not fun!

Now, I have almost finished the tapes on my first wing and I am really happy with the way it is looking! I have used The Polyfiber system in a class and on a small covering job and the two systems are very similar through the taping stage. Superflite might have a small advantage because it's glue is tinted bluish green and that makes it easier to see the glue saturate the fabric.

More cons...there isn't much support for this product. There are very few you tube vids using superflite and the manual is very generic. So, I have had a lot of specific questions that I can't find answers to.
Another con is their reinforcement tape. It is less porous than the Polyfiber tape and I don't like how the glue sits on it.

Anyway, here are some pics of the progress. By the way, rib stitching was not as difficult as I had remembered, but after a hundred or so knots it mysteriously gets easier
