I've always run it with the muffler; it is an FMF muffler with aluminum body and had the stacked plates that can be added and deleted to adjust backpressure.  I ran it with the plates for a while and built a deflector shroud to keep the exhaust off of the under side of the plane but was still getting some exhaust smell on occasion so I pulled all the plates and made a plate with a 1 3/4" down pipe and bolted it on.  I couldn't tell any difference in the noise level and it ran the same.  I don't know how it compares to the Status pipes and muffler though since Jack doesn't have his flying yet (hint, hint).

I had a  Pilot ANR headset I bought when I first got my Avid MKIV after flying it about twice and enjoying ringing ears for the next 12 hours.  They worked well for a lot of years but the rechargeable batter finally gave out on them and I ended up getting a transformer adapter from Radio Shack and plugging them into my auxiliary power port in the plane to run on plane power.  Still worked well.  Back in Jan this year I ran across a local guy selling a Bose A20 headset for a deal I couldn't refuse.  I had never been able to hear the wind noise in my Avid+ until now.  Best muffler ever.

Love seeing those pictures over the Rockies.  I didn't fly when I was living in Utah so only got to see those from commercial airline altitudes.  Would love to fly that area and Idaho sometime, it is beautiful country!  It would be soo cool to do an AFF flyin down there on a Idaho/Utah tour and up her on an AK tour.  Guess that will happen when we are all retired like Ed and rich like???

    Hello Doug
Your spring comparison photo was just what I needed.
I was concerned that the 3 leaf spring would raise my tail more than the 2 leaf and it appears it will not.
The 8" wide Matco tire is a  huge improvement in the sand but unfortunately it raises the tail  2" higher than when the 6" hard rubber Maule tail wheel is installed.
I was hoping the 3  leaf would not raise the tail even more.
The more Angle of Attack my Kitfox has the shorter it takes of and lands.

I just read the info. on your recent aircraft purchases.
Sounds like you have owned several Rotax 912's .
Let me know if you know of one for sale.

    Thanks again

Looks like I better start making some plans. Anybody got pull with a RV rental place in Elkhart, IN? Russ said he'd go in on one this year. ;-)

Weight came in at 766 LBs the forward CG was 11.73 and the rear was 13.66. I have 20 lbs of weight in rear baggage  but I notice Randy is packing 50 lbs so maybe I should try that first.

The .090 came from a local commercial glass installer.  My son is a construction superintendent (copied the old man) and this guy works with him quite a bit.  I had the kid tell him to order a sheet as I'm now retired and don't have the pull with some of these guys like I used to have.  I said no rush, just include it with another order (no extra shipping cost)  Might have been cheaper because of all that.  The .060 sheet was from Seeley Plastics.  They have a branch in Duluth (75 mi away) and that was their price to me.  I picked it up at their place.  Seeley was good to work with, I bought a 4'x10'x3/16" sheet of UHMW for ski bottoms a while back and their price beat everyone else.  Jim Chuk

Was 50*F at 6 pm here yesterday. Started snowing around 9am today and 12 hrs later we have 20" on the ground and I can't see the shop from the house. Supposed to go till 9am tomorrow, everything's closed due to blizzard warnings, winds 20-25 G50. And Spring is only a week away?

  21. EDMO added a post in a topic Installing finger strainers on Catalina fiberglass tank? Options?

I have been looking for flow meters - I found a 1 1/4 UMA meter, 0-8 gph in Spruce, for about $180 new, but you have to buy the Floscan or another brand of sender, and I think these cost about as much - so, $360 plus tax/shipping is best I have found.
Kenneth, good point about swinging wings instead of draining tanks - Duh!     I would say that a good safety way would be to install finger strainers, and then put the clear glass filters in the line just after the shutoff valve, like Leni has, then if no gas is in filter, your finger strainer is plugged up.  Again, others don't like a filter before the header tank?

I disagree with adding a fixed trim tab.  This is only a bandaid.  There is an underlying problem that needs to be rectified.  Putting a tab on the rudder is one thing, but a fixed tab on the elevator is not a solution.

I like the Rans trim system as a "simple" add on.  They have a tab that can be mounted on the trailing edge of the elevator which is cable controlled from the cabin.

Where are you in weight and balance?  Is it time to put some (more) weight in the tail?

    Jim,

Where did you get a sheet for that price? I'm getting ready for a new windshield in Pursang and could really use a good deal on it. I can go buy the .060 at Wicks just up the road but can't seem to find a good price on .080 or .09, which I'd much rather have than the .060 for stiffness.

It was raining like cow pissing on a flat rock at the house yesterday.  Snowmachine is kaput for this year   Hoping the rain thaws the lakes out and get the float season here a little quicker!
