    Legal advise
There's a guy over on team Kitfox who is in need.

I'd encourage anyone here how may have some knowledge to read his story and maybe offer some help.

Long story short, his CFI took the plane (Kitfox III) out without permission and ground looped it. Now the guy has a wrecked plane and no way to repair it.

Just trying to help a brother out...

    582 engine mount differences
Hey guys, I'm considering swapping out my Dina vibe motor mount for the standard motor mount on my mkiv. Are these interchangeable? Do they place the engine in the same position from firewall to cowling? Thanks, Bryce

When I was working for the Union Pacific, our Gang was made up o about 50% Midwesterners, and when we were in LA, people were always hunting for the classic vehicles, I hauled back one 64.5 mustang that had never been outside of Riverside County in it's life. A true survivor but it only had the 6 cylinder, I was about 15 minutes late from buying it, but I still got my fuel paid for hauling it back.

I can recommend "Kitplanes" mag for everyone
    - In this months issue, the wheel alignment article, 3 guys building a Bearhawk, the cowl insulation article, and the stick grips articles,  and , building a WW1 replica, and a gyro article, not to mention the electrical section, DAR section, and Barnaby Wainfain writing about aileron flutter.
Far more than you get from "Snort Aviation" and reading about some woman taking a ride in a Super-duper $500K factory-built, or writing Kitfox articles by mis-quoting what Ed Downs wrote years ago.

You can get 10 issues and a book on "getting started with Kit Aircraft", for $15.95 - but make sure you don't get screwed by one of the false addresses who try to sell the mag illegally.   P.O. BOX 8536, Big Sandy, TX 75755-9842 is the real address.
    <www.kitplanes.com>
Didn't mean to steal the gear thread - but if you had Kitplanes, you could read about aligning gear.
And, NO - I am not on commission - just passing the word.

    Kenneth,
The article was good in telling how to check your alignment.   As far as the age-old toe-in-out question, they had the same thing that I have read a thousand times:  some say toe-in / some say toe-out / some say no-toe at all...........   I need to read it again, but think the article went more with no-toe.....

That would be great if I was a subscriber. Seems you have to have a subscription to read it. It's not that I don't know how to do it, but it would be nice to see what they are saying in the latest news about it. I've heard everything from setting toe in to toe to no toe at all. I'm not sure what to buy into anymore.

With the latest change of the tailwheel to the Matco 6" that I already had the rudder and steering on the ground in much better. The problem I'm having now is the resonance the tailwheel creates that wasn't there with the Maule, every crack across the runway is exaggerated through the airframe like a tuning fork. Not sure what is making it do this yet. The issue is that I also re-arched the spring at the same time so it could be there instead of the tailwheel itself. I just know that the Matco is much louder than the Maule, but the Maule was getting worn out in the oilite bushing and it was easier to replace it that replace the bearing since I already had the other assembly. I really wonder if there is something I did when I bend the spring in the press, like the top spring isn't sitting solidly against the lower one causing the reverberation. Just  thought. But it does steer so much better that I'm planning on keeping it and troubleshooting the noise.

I flew the plane again for a few minutes today and found that the flaps will hold at least up to almost full, but it was so bumpy I didn't stay up for very long. I need to get up again and check it out if I can ever get some smooth air. It's tough here in the mid-west this spring to find good weather. Hope everyone else is finally leaving winter behind.

    need help
i just joined this forum and have enjoyed the info. My problem is this, I'm trying to join another forum, called Homebuilt Airplanes, com, I'm sure some of you are familiar with that Forum.
I have completed the registration form, but there isn't a box to click on to complete the registration. Tried to send a message to the Administrator, same deal, no place to send message. The only box at the bottom of either one, says" reset fields".
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Richard

Don't anyone recognize the "unknown object" as a "tamperproof hood locking device" - Took a lot of effort to mess up all those threads so nobody could take it off!     Really surprised that they didn't weld it.
Seriously, we did chain our hoods down for safety and preventing thefts.....

Nice Joey, I love that era.  I had a 64 falcon and a 63 ranchero in the past.  the 64 falcon dash looks very similar.  Don't you know about that method of making your own locknuts.    It always amazes me what some people do to cars, glad to see you rescued this one before the previous "mechanic" did too much fixing on it.  Look forward to the progress.

I would gladly pay your expense and a reasonable amount for the pedals, I will eventually switch to Hydraulic Brakes, but am trying to finish this plane without anymore modifications, The rudder pedals and installing windows and some other sheet metal and I am done, After 10 years it is about time and with 3 grass strips I really only need brakes for taxiing so the cable brakes I have should do fine thank you.

  16. rdooley79 added a post in a topic 582 mod 90 rebuild options

I have nothing but great things to say for Rotax Rick. He can certainly rebuild your 582. I would seriously consider upgrading to either the 618 or 670 using the 582 as a doner "core" to offset the cost with parts like the ignition and head. Either way you'll have a great motor.

I have a 618 on my trike that is an amazing motor. Just might swap the 618 to the KF but am drooling over the 670.

If you want to go super cheap you can always do it yourself but I can say that the parts aren't cheap and you'll have a ton of time in the project. What is your time worth, especially if you only have evenings and weekends to do the job, what are those hours worth? Rick can get it done and back to you fast also.

Just my $0.02 after doing a bit of engine swapping recently.

Joey, I think they are exactly the same until they went to hydraulic.
I will still have to look for mine but will not be home until some time after the first of the week. I will get some photos up and if track welder can get some use out of them I will send them to you

I I still had them I could take a picture, but then I wouldn't need them They had little pieces of tubing that held the cable ends, I was hoping that someone else might be able to post a picture. My set developed legs while it was in the old hangar, now that I am in the new hangar and ready for reassembly I will have to make some.
I was going to go with hydrauliv brakes, but decided that I would go with the parts I have and do that conversion later.

Yes - Prayers and sympathies for the families.
How many times I have seen disasters which could have been avoided if the house buyers / builders had just checked with the geologists first - it seems in this case, the people in the local government completely ignored / did not even read, the Corps of Engineers warnings about impending mudslides for this community.  One woman who survived the mudslide said she bought her house there two years ago, and no one told her about the report of the possibility of mudslides.
When the 1964 Quake hit Anchorage Alaska, the houses that had been built over Bootleggers Cove Clay were the most destroyed, as the clay turns to liquid when shaken.
Before I bought my house there, I checked the geology reports and maps and found a house built on top of a moraine with no trace of clay under it.
I grew up near the swamps, and was in deep floods by the time I was 6, and another 10 years later.  I vowed to leave there and have a house sitting on a high, solid hill and never be flooded out again - After owning a lot of houses in different states, I have always kept that promise to myself and my family.
I hope someone will read and learn from this.

    Robert,
If you could post a photo or two of those type of pedals, the uneducated, like me, would appreciate knowing the differences between them and the hydraulic brake pedals - might even recognize a set some day if I ever see some.
    Thanks,

I think I still have my originals laying around somewhere, if you're still looking I will try and dig them up the first of the week when I get back home and you can have them if you pick up the freight, I don't imagine it would be more than 10 bucks at best. let me know

    Ed,

You are correct about him making it that way for the ease of change. However, to take the gear off requires that you rebleed that side brake as well as figuring out how to block/jack the aircraft up. Something I'm not sure I'd be able to do if I messed it up in the back country. He told me the only time he had to straighten the gear up he was able to fly it home. Not sure what happened but it even tweaked the carry through area enough that I'm almost wondering if that is where the geometry issue is coming from.
