    The big wide tire slows the tail down quite a bit on pavement. You can also run it completly flat and barely notice it. I went thru 4 flats on my 7" pneumatic one before I tossed it. The 8" is a tubeless Carlisle tire. I am on my 3rd tailwheel set up and the 8" "wide" dual fork Matco has been by far my favorite. I hated my Maule set up.

    no problems on the pavement that I have noticed.  Other than I don't feel and hear every crack in the black top anymore!

    9 oz back up battery... it just dont get much better than that!  Randy, your killing me!  That seems like the perfect solution to us guys running a clutch who are scared to death we are going to leave a master on or something stupid like that and find ourselves out in the middle of no where with no way to start the plane. 
     
    Maybe even just plumbing it in so it will charge when the engine is running but be isolated and not subject to current draw when the master is on... for 9oz its pretty good peace of mind!

    I started with the 6" hard tire Maul and then went to the 8" pnumatic tire Maul; that is a vast improvemetn and does pretty well.  After several years I bought the 8" wide tired Matco and have been flying it for the past couple of years.  There is not much difference in the hard stuff since myMaul always handled fine and unlocked just like it was supposed to (unlike experiences others have had with them) but like Leni said, the Matco wide tire really helps it stay on top of the soft sand.  landing in that sand it is funny to see the Maul TW's; in fact you can't see them at all, just a rooster tail of sand.

    Ther are a couple of places in Anchorage who are dealers for them (can't remember who except ATV Salvage in ER) but they are on their web site as dealers.
     
    They have a new jumper battery coming out next month and had one at the show; it is about 1" wide by 2" tall and 6" long and weighs about 9 oz if I remember right.  It looks kind of like a little flashlight and has an LED flashlight built into one end but the cool thing is it has a port that you plug one end of the jumper cable leads into and they have about a foot of cable with good high quality alegator clamps on the ends.  It puts out 220 CCA for jump starting.  Plus it has a port for charging /operating the typical electrical devices such as cell phones, camers, laptops, etc.  I think it might just take the place of my 20 lb jumper battery I carry in the plane in the winter.

    I like the handling of the 8" matco.  It soaks up the bumps better and it does not dig in when your playing in the soft stuff.  That said, I wish I would have gone with the dual arm not the single arm.
     
    I made an extended bar for the TW chains to attach to on the rudder so I could get more throw, but the tail spring is so tall when set to the correct angle that the chains are at a stupid angle and I loose most of the steering anyway.  I need to make a new bar that will drop the chain attach point down a couple inches to give me better geometry on the chains and that should help the steering a BUNCH. 
     
    The tail wheel you have is not a bad one, I just like wider so I dont have an anchor digging in on the soft stuff.

    I wasn´t aimming for legalities issues, but more like an EYE BALL DESIGN, back yard inventor, this is a sweet little plane.
     
    take a look at it, 
    straight square fuselage bottom side is flat, meaning can be use as a waterline and reference and easy to build in the bench. Cowling is as square as it can be, yet it looks good with the large spinner on it,  wings, SIMPLE, one piece, attached to the rest with an "A" frame. Engine, Honda orinally 14hp upograded it to 30+HP workmanship is not "THAT" questionable However he needs help like the rest of us, Just a little bit of help and he will be on track, he was banned from a local airport... that´s why he is looking for a take off place...
    is a ultralight in definition, and therefore the rules are different, if he would have choose a different design, I don´t think he could get away with many things...
     
    either way an A + for his effort, workmanship and enthusiasm!!

    Doug, Sorry I am so long getting back on this.  I have mine set about the same as Jerry with the exception of the oil temp alarm which I set to 270 F which is 15 F below Rotax max.

    Thanks for all the input I just ordered the earth x ETX 6A under 1 pound and only 135 bucks shipped to the door. hope its works out as good as it sounds. its also made here in good ol USA which is worth something to me.

    I heated the Hysol'd fittings today and they twisted right out! Thanks for that tip!
    Yes, I agree that the 45s going down is the best option for all the reasons mentioned. The do both combine and run forward to the fuel shutoff valve and then through the firewall to the engine.

    Thanks again for all the help! It is great being able to find answers to these questions! It is nice not having to reinvent the wheel with every road bump!
