Sounds like it's not worth much, even sitting brand new in the box. Good to know.

Thanks again guys. Always good information here.

you would have to built the tanks so heavy that its way past the point of being worth it.  Aluminum tanks dont last long in a flexy wing.

Its a points motor.. I would give ya a few hundred for it as you can use that case to build a 582 but thats about all its good for IMO... The only 532 I flew behind tried to kill me 9 times in 9 flights none lasting more than 2 minutes.

The 532 is no longer made - at one time, a long time ago, Kitfox advertised an exchange program to trade in for the new gray-head 582, and later that was replaced by the blue-head with dual ignition, and newer redrive.
Nothing bad that I know of about the single-ignition 532, except that you cant buy a crank for one now.  If your crank is bad, just use it for a boat anchor.   I've got a complete electric start 532 with 80 hours on it - cheap!
some of them were sold without electric start - possibly the early redrives were not as good as later ones?
The 2-stroke guys on here know a lot more than I do about this engine.

These wings flex so much that the original aluminum tanks cracked and leaked.

    Kenneth -

So glad to know you and your wife kept cool heads and managed to survive this incident. I've been seeing too many crashes lately. We've had 2 crashs here in NC within the last week or so that have claimed the lives of 3 people one of whom was an acquaintance.  I'm just getting back into sport-flying after nearly a 2-decade sabbatical. Lately I've been reassessing the risk and wondering if I really want to add more risk to my life as I bring my Avid to airworthiness.

Wasn't your Avid on the market/for-sale? It has the Subaru mtr if I recall from posts past.

Again, wanted to pass on that I'm glad you're OK.

Rotax 532, what would a new one be worth + other questions
Hi all, I'm doing some research and am curious what a brand new rotax 532 would be worth? I realize everyone wants a 582 and want to know why, pros, cons, etc.

I may have a line on one that is brand new in the box and wondered if I was able to pick it up what would be a good price point for it versus what I might expect to get for it if I was selling it on Barnstormers?

I'm curious why the aluminum tank would be such an issue? I realize that many believe the tank to be an integral part of the wings when it comes to rigidity and structure, but why couldn't an aluminum tank be built to do the same thing? There isn't really any reason you couldn't put structure inside of it to fill the same need.

    Thoughts?

The Pacer / Tri-Pacer / Maule / etc. had a flat firewall - from one of the photos posted above, the Magnum must have a partly recessed firewall like the Avids / Kitfox - I don't know if the Piper engine mount / nosewheel mount can be modified to fit the Magnum - All a matter of clearences, and making things fit,  I guess?

    Hi Ed,
Nose wheel attachment to the engine mount......even better if the Tri-pacer mount can be (relatively) easily modified to fit the Magnum.

I have no idea how similar they are unfortunately.

    Chris,
The Tri-Pacer nose gear is an extra attachment to the engine mount - not part of it.  It attaches to the firewall - I have 1 1/2 of them.
You just unbolt it and remove it to convert back to Pacer / taildragger.
Probably one of the strongest nose mounts made for small planes.

I seem to be the only one on this site that likes both tri gear and tail wheel versions of these planes. I know there are two camps and neither will cross over to the other side )

That said, I recommend considering building any Avid so that it is convertible. It doesn't add much weight, and re-sale if you should ever decide to do it is much higher for planes that are convertible. And there are many instances of owners who start out in one configuration and decide later they want to try the other...and I've seen it go both ways.

Anyway, that is the lead in to my comment. I like the idea of modifying the tri pacer mount for the Magnum if that will work. It will be difficult to impossible to find a Magnum mount already made up unless someone has wrecked magnum they are parting out. It seems like the pacer mount would give you a great start, and if it all fits right, would provide a nose wheel weldment built into the mount should anyone ever want to run a nosewheel at any time in the future. The Magnum had two different motor mounts. One with nose wheel weldment and one without. If you got the mount without the weldment like my Magnum was built, you cannot convert without the other mount. The only downside I can see to the nose wheel weldment version is it takes a bit more creative plumbing for carb heat etc.

    Just thinking out loud....

    Kenneth,
You can have my blue tarp too - just duct tape the holes I put in it - or go to Harbor Freight and buy one cheap - or both.
Thought you were coming over today?

    Ed,

Thanks, I've checked with them and they don't have the aluminum I need, they do have the 4130 though. I can't seem to find anyone that carries 2.5" .083 wall tubing for spars. Several places online carry the .065, but I want something stiffer for a heavier build. Maybe I'm just overly cautious with the spars.

    Doug,

Thanks for the kind words. If you liked her write up on the accident you should check out her books. Plus it will help us a little financially! I do have the time to rebuild as I'm not working. My biggest issue is the space to work in right now. I have my little Teenie Two in the garage and the Pursang in my big trailer that is usually my work shop so I'm limited. I need to build a shed or at least tarp the Pursang fuse so I have my workspace back I guess.

I really was hoping to just have to rebuild the fuselage and install everything else that I have. The right wing be damages wasn't in the plan. I can rebuild it and have the skills to do it, just didn't want to have the extra expense or time put into it.

    Kenneth -

My thanks to you and DW for sharing the story, a very engaging read to be sure. After seeing the pics; 1.) soo glad your physical injuries were minimal; 2.) me thinks a Pursang II project starting from Ed's bare fuse would be a real time saver.

Based on your previous posts I know you have the skill set to make it happen, but do you have the time is always the question. Gad, I think back on the day I bought my first Mk-IV kit, which snowballed and horse-traded into three more projects, and wonder where the time went...

BTW, if I haven't pointed you to it already, this thread has good info on spar and spar stiffener history that will be helpful if you rebuild new wings.

That would appear to be the case, along with a whole bunch of missing ribs and drag/anti-drag tubes if I understand correctly. My spidey-sense alarm went off immediately when I saw the pics. Other Avid and Kitfox related builders (not to mention the manufacturers themselves) have tried and been proved wrong with this approach, so I'd like to hear from Mr. Chapman what is different this time.
